19Dawn was breaking in a clearing sky as Milt, Odom, and Tex posed in their flight suits on the wing of the Reynolds Bombshell. They hammed it up for the news photographers, and Milton, of course, waved a fistful of the new pens. You’d think they were three lodge brothers off on a fishing trip. And after our father-son “talk,” I wouldn’t say we were fully reconciled, but at least we had an understanding. Each was letting the other go his separate way, and I hoped there was a measure of respect. Milt was ready to be a kid again. And play with his new toy. They flew from Meigs to LaGuardia, where they were met by clearing skies and a much larger press corps. And on April 12, 1947, the momentous flight finally commenced.
