Hours had passed but it felt like days. My body felt like it weighed a ton. I tried lifting my shoulder off of the table but I couldn't. Was it the injection that had my body feeling this way? Or was it hunger? Maybe it was both. Any attempt I had at saving my energy went out of the window. It felt as though it was stolen. I had no control. The next thing I knew, my bonding's were being undone. I hadn't even heard the lady say that my time was up. My body was lifted into the air as if it weighed nothing. Everything seemed blurred and slowed down. The light slowly faded as he walked down the dark hallway. I could hear the tapping sounds of each step he took. He stopped walking as I could hear the wall moving, opening. Then he took a couple more steps before dropping me on the ground. I grunted as I lay there. The air was knocked out of me and I felt even weaker than before. The man began walking away and soon the tapping of his steps faded away. The wall closed soon after. The entire room was silent until she whimpered. The girl from before. They had left her out here as well.
"Help." was all that she could say. I was barely above a whisper but I could hear it clear as day. I grunted as I stretched out my arms to feel around. I couldn't feel her anywhere in front of me. I grunted again as I slowly moved my body along the floor. My eyes were slowly adjusting to the dark room around me. Each move felt like I was one step closer to dying. I held back the sobs that so badly wanted to come out. I held them in because I knew I had to be strong for the girl that was lying in this room with me, crying. I felt the edge of the wall and pulled myself up. I was gasping for air as I felt around for the water cooler. When I finally felt it I hurried to grab a cup and filled it with some water. I didn't know how much I had filled it but as a couple of seconds passed, I put the cup to my lips. I could feel some of my strength returning the more I drank. I grabbed a new cup and filled it with some more water. This time I placed it on the ground as I slid back onto my stomach ready to bring it to the girl.
"I need you to talk so I can help you." I managed to get out.
"I'm. Here." She said. I could hear her breathing hard as talking clearly tired her out. I pushed the cup in front of me and then pulled my body along the floor. I continued doing that making sure I wasn't spilling any of the water as I went. Her breathing grew louder the closer I got. I wanted to cry when I could feel her arm with my hand. I followed her arm all the way to her shoulder and then her head.
"I have some water. I can't see you very well, so I'm going to need you to help me." I told her. I used one of my hands to lift her head as she groaned. I moved the cup slowly to her face at first bumping it into her nose. I slowly moved the cup down to her lips and began tilting it. Once the water reached her lips she began trying to gulp it down. Soon the cup was empty and I set it down. I gently set her head down and rolled onto my back.
"Can I have more please?" She spoke.
"I don't have the strength. I'm sorry. We just need to hold on till the morning, okay." I said to her. She let out another whimper as her response. I knew this was hard for her. It was hard for me too. I was surprised that I was able to move as much as I had. Now was the hard part. Waiting for the morning and for the others to help us. I closed my eyes as I reached out for her hand. Once I grabbed her hand, she gave mine a gentle squeeze. I could hear her crying and I knew that I couldn't. I had to be strong for her. I let my eyes fall shut and let the darkness take over.
"Wake up. Please wake up." A voice said. Everything sounded groggy. My eyes opened but all I could see was a blurred figure. I could no longer feel the girl's hand in mine and panic rose within me. I wanted to shoot up and search for her but I couldn't. When I tried to move I was held down. "Don't," The figure said. "You'll only hurt yourself." They added. It was a male's voice, that much I could tell. I felt something touch my lips and realized it was cool refreshing water. I drank, wanting more as I finished all that was given to me. I didn't realize I had closed my eyes until I opened them again. The more I blinked, the more my vision began to focus.
"Kane?" I whispered. His face was covered in worry.
"Are you okay?" he asked. I nodded. I saw his shoulders fall a slight bit in relief.
"The girl?" I asked. I turned my head to look at where the girl should have been but I couldn't see her. All I could see were faces and backs.
"She's okay. Let me get you to your room." He said. I felt his strong arms wrap around me and lift me up. He walked slowly through the crowd of people. He didn't say anything as he carried me all the way to my room.
"Kane, these people are crazy," I said to him as he began to set me down.
"Shh, you need to rest. Hopefully, you'll get enough soon. The others still haven't woken up yet. It's like they're in a coma."
"It's what they're putting into us. It takes our strength. She said it would eventually make us stronger." I said to him. He looked shocked.
"They, they told you?" he asked. His face paled.
"Everything they're doing to us is one big experiment. We aren't the first they've done this to and we won't be the last. Whatever it is, we are the first ones to have succeed. The injections before killed the others. The one they're using now seems to be working. At least it's not killing us. Kane, I don't know how we can survive this. It makes us weak. We will just die if they put us through something like the maze again." I didn't realize I was crying until he wiped a tear off of my face.
"Why are they doing this?" he looked worried even more now or was it fear that was now on his face? I had never seen fear on his face before.
"They want evolution. She said that evolution for the human race had stopped and that it was up to her to start the change." I told him.
"That's insane," he whispered.
"Kane, we have to find a way out of this place. We have to." I said to him. The strength I had gained was now fading. I could feel it leaving my body.
"We will and I'll get you out of here. I promise," he said. That was the last thing I heard before my eyes closed and my body went limp.
