We sat there at our table waiting for hours. Lunch had come and gone but we couldn't muster up the energy to eat. All I could think about was what kind of torture were they putting Timmy through. Our first trial was nowhere near this long. He was just a small boy. How could he be expected to handle a trial so long? How could they expect him to handle any of this? This was inhumane. I would give anything to be back in that alley. Anything. Anywhere was better than this. Finally, we heard the wall open. Two of the guards were dragging in a girl. She was one of the people that were taken by them earlier. Her head was hanging low and her feet were dragging on the ground. Everyone was watching, standing, waiting. The two men dropped her on the ground, swiftly turned around, and disappeared behind the closing wall. Everyone rush to the girl's side. She looked like she had been through hell and back. Her skin was pale and cold to the touch. Kane and I gently rolled her to her back. It looked like she was struggling to even open her eyes.
"Get her something to drink!" Kane shouted. I held her head in my lap as he was kneeling in front of her. She was covered in sweat. Someone broke through the crowd of people and handed Kane a cup that I assume was filled with water.
"Help me sit her up," I said. Two people came to either side of her and grabbed her by her arms. "Gently," I told them. They nodded and gently picked her up, leaning her against me. She groaned as they moved her. Kane raised the cup to her lips gently tilting it for her to drink. She took small sips as she savored the water. Kane pulled the cup away from her lips so she could take a moment to breathe.
"What happened? What did they do to you?" Kane asked. She opened her mouth and then closed it. She looked afraid of something.
"They." she croaked as she looked at all of us. "They did something to us. We were in a lab I think. They held us in separate cages but made us watch and hear everything." She said. She sounded weak. She sounded like talking was tiring her out a lot.
"What were they doing to you?" Kane asked again.
"They were putting some kind of medicine in us. They had multiple of them. I think each one was different. I was so afraid. The others before me. It killed them. They would inject them with it and then wait. The first person had like an allergic reaction, and he couldn't breathe. They didn't even help him. They just stood and watched as he struggled. He couldn't even move. They had us tied down by our hands and feet. When he died they took notes of everything that happened and then called the next one. I was the first one to survive. I thought I was going to die." She said as she began crying. Her entire body was shaking. I held onto her as she cried. Everyone was silent. The only sound in the room was her crying.
"Did they say why they were doing this?" Kane asked gently. She shook her head no.
"They called us subjects. Like we're some kind of experiment," she said. There were whispers now coming from the people around us.
"Quiet." Kane hissed as he looked at them. Their whispers faded and only then did he turn his attention back to her. "Have they gotten to Timmy yet?" Kane asked her. It felt like the time between her response lasted forever. I was finding it hard to breathe, waiting for her to respond. I was hoping, praying, that Timmy wasn't one of the people that died before they got to her.
"No, he was still in his cage. I don't know who they called up next after they brought me back here. They had me strapped on that table for hours to see if I would have a reaction. When I didn't, they seemed pleased. They took more notes and then the two men took me off of the table and brought me back out. Can I get some more water please?" she asked. Kane nodded and brought the cup back up to her lips. He looked worried. I knew he was concerned about Timmy. I was too.
"Come on. You should eat something." Kane said as he pulled the cup away.
"No, I can't eat. I just want to go to my room." She looked at Kane, pleadingly. "Please, I can't eat right after I watched two people die. Please just help me to my room." She cried. Kane sighed as he nodded.
"Alright, people let's help her to her room. I need a couple of people on each side to support her body." A bunch of people came and got on her side. "Alright on three, we lift okay. One. Two. Three." Kane said as they lifted her simultaneously.
"It's the fourth one on the left." She said to them. They all nodded and began walking to her room. I stood and watched with the rest of the people as she was being carried to her room. Everyone was silent. I guess we were all wondering who were the people who were killed by these monsters. I hoped that Timmy wouldn't be one of them. He was so young and for his life to be taken away from him. These people would go to hell for what they are doing here. Kane and the others returned looking sad. It was hard for us all to see her in that condition and hear what she had just gone through. Everyone slowly went back to their tables where they were previously sitting and some of them even went back to their rooms. Kane came up to me looking concerned. He rubbed his face as he looked around the room at the people that were here with us.
"What is this place?" he asked. It was barely above a whisper. He sighed as he stood beside me.
"I don't know Kane. I wish I did. I wish I knew who was behind this. I wish we could all just be back in that alley. I'd rather be begging for food or even not eating. I just want out of here. How are we going to survive this Kane?" He was silent for a moment.
"We eat, sleep and do our best to pass these trials. We have to get strong in order to do that. We can't mope around and let our bodies weaken. We have to be prepared for whatever they might throw at us. Who knows what kind of crazy trials these people have in mind for us. It could be some twisted stuff. We have to be able to push beyond what we can do.
"Kane they literally broke my arm in our first trial. How am I going to pass the next trials? They are bound to be tougher. What if they kill me? Kane I don't want to die." I said as I slowly began to hyperventilate. He pulled me into his body as he wrapped his arms around me. He ran his hand down my head hoping to calm me down.
"Shh, shh. You are strong Maddie. You don't have to be afraid. You can pass these trials." Kane said. He held onto me as I cried.
"I don't think I can Kane."
"Don't say that. Don't you ever say that." he snapped. He pulled away slightly so he could look me in the eyes. He seemed angry. Not only angry but I could see a lot of other emotions in his eyes. He pulled me back to his chest and held me for a while longer. "Come on. Let's go sit back at the table. Hopefully, they'll bring Timmy out. I really hope they do." Kane said as he pulled me towards the table. A couple of people were sitting there but some of them had gone to their rooms. The common room was filling with voices. People discussed what they had heard together. Everyone trying to figure out what these people were going to do to us. I couldn't help but wonder that question every day. I couldn't help wondering what kind of people would do this. Kane and I sat there. We sat for hours. Dinner had come around and reluctantly we ate. We knew we needed to in order to build up our strength. We had finished eating and just like the announcement said this morning, the lights flickered. One by one everyone in the common room began to stand up and head back to their rooms. I stood up but saw that Kane was still sitting down.
"Kane we have to go. They won't let us stay here. You know that. It's not smart for you to stay to get beaten and then taken to your room. We need to be strong remember." I said as I tried to pull him up.
"Timmy isn't back yet. No one has come back yet. What if they killed them? What if they bring Timmy back in. He will need someone to help him to his room."
"Kane, please. What good would you do Timmy if you're dead? You need your strength to pass these trials too." I told him again. He nodded after a moment and then stood up. We walked down the hallway together until he walked into his room and then I walked the rest of the way alone to my room. I went to my bed and sat on the edge of it. I watched as the wall slowly began closing. I could only hope that Timmy and whoever else was alive would remain that way. The lights slowly dimmed out and I swung my legs onto my bed to lay down. I closed my eyes hoping that whatever came tomorrow wouldn't get me killed. All I could do was hope.
