Chapter Five: Unseen Eyes

809 Words
The mansion never truly slept. Even in the quiet hours, shadows shifted and whispers traveled along polished floors. Amina tiptoed through the east wing, carrying a small bundle wrapped in a soft blanket. Her heartbeat echoed in her ears. Every sound felt louder than it should—footsteps from the hallway, the faint hum of the heating, even her own breath. She had promised herself she’d be careful. That the child—the secret—would remain hers until the time was right. “Mom?” a small voice whispered from the bundle. Amina bent slightly, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face. “I’m here, my love. Everything’s fine.” Outside the room, footsteps approached. She froze. “Late night?” Noah’s voice cut through the hall. Amina’s stomach twisted. “I… uh, just checking on some things,” she said lightly, forcing a calm she didn’t feel. Noah stepped into the doorway, leaning casually but his gaze sharp. “You’re very… quiet tonight.” “I’ve had a long day,” she replied, glancing down at the bundle in her arms. He frowned. “Let me help.” “No,” she said quickly. “It’s… it’s nothing you need to worry about.” His eyes narrowed. “Amina, if you’re hiding something, I can tell. You’ve always been terrible at hiding.” She pressed the blanket closer to her chest. “There’s nothing to see.” Noah studied her. For a moment, his expression softened, but there was still suspicion—protective, relentless. “Alright,” he said finally, stepping back. “But… if something happens, I’ll know. And I won’t stay quiet.” Amina nodded, her pulse racing. “I know.” Noah left, footsteps fading, and Amina exhaled slowly. Too close, she thought. I have to be more careful. ⸻ The next morning, the mansion buzzed with energy. The brothers gathered in the drawing room, discussing a new acquisition for the family business. Amina lingered in the background, listening, absorbing, careful to stay in the periphery. Elias’s gaze found hers repeatedly. Every glance sent electricity through her chest—warning, longing, and something unsaid. Valeria entered moments later, dripping with charm and confidence. “Good morning, everyone,” she said. “I hope I haven’t arrived too early.” “No,” Adrian said smoothly. “We were just discussing business.” Valeria’s eyes lingered on Amina longer than necessary. “Amina,” she said sweetly. “I hope the house is treating you well.” “It is,” Amina replied politely. Her smile was calm, but inside, her nerves prickled. Valeria was closer now than she had ever been. Every calculated glance, every subtle gesture, carried intent. Elias leaned slightly toward Amina, whispering, “Stay cautious.” She nodded subtly, thankful for his quiet warning. ⸻ Later, Amina moved into the garden courtyard to catch a few moments of peace. She cradled the child in her arms, rocking gently, whispering lullabies she hadn’t sung in years. “Shh… it’s okay,” she murmured. “Everything will be fine.” A sound behind her made her freeze. Valeria. “Good morning,” Valeria said, voice smooth and light, but her eyes were calculating. “What a beautiful child.” Amina’s heart stuttered. She pressed the blanket closer. “Who are you talking about?” Valeria smiled, a little too knowingly. “Oh… I just assumed you were… entertaining a little guest. Must be nice, having someone to care for.” Amina’s chest tightened. She forced herself to keep her tone calm. “The only guests I entertain are known to me.” Valeria stepped closer. “It’s a shame when secrets are hidden from those who should know. Don’t you think?” Amina’s fingers tightened around the blanket. She could feel the warmth of the child beneath it, the soft heartbeat against her chest, reminding her why she had returned—to protect this secret at all costs. “I don’t know what you mean,” she said evenly. Valeria’s lips curved into a sharp smile. “Of course you don’t. But don’t worry. Some truths have a way of coming out… whether we’re ready or not.” Before Amina could respond, Elias appeared at the garden doorway, his presence commanding and immediate. “Valeria,” he said firmly. “This is enough.” Valeria’s eyes flicked to him, calculating, and then back to Amina. “We’ll see,” she said softly, almost a whisper. Elias stepped closer to Amina, protective. “Come inside. Now.” Amina nodded, relief and tension mingling as she carefully retreated, keeping the blanket concealed. Valeria’s gaze followed them as they disappeared back into the mansion. And from somewhere deep in the hall, Noah watched silently, his intuition screaming that the storm had only just begun.
