Chapter Three: “Shattered Illusions”

*****Ashley's heart sank as she faced Ryan. His eyes blazed with fury, and his smile twisted into a menacing grin.

"You think you can escape me?" Ryan sneered, his voice dripping with malice.

Ashley stood firm, Emily's words echoing in her mind: "You're strong, Ash. You deserve freedom."

"I'm done, Ryan," Ashley declared, her voice steady. "The restraining order is in place. Leave me alone."

Ryan chuckled, his eyes glinting with amusement. "You think a piece of paper can stop me?"

Suddenly, a figure emerged from the shadows. Tall, broad-shouldered, and imposing.

"Ryan, I think it's time to leave," the stranger said, his deep voice commanding attention.

Ryan's grin faltered, and for a moment, Ashley saw fear flicker in his eyes.

The stranger's presence seemed to command the air around him. Ryan's confidence wavered, and he took a step back.

"Who are you?" Ryan demanded, trying to regain his composure.

The stranger smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Someone who's been watching you, Ryan. And I don't like what I see."

Ashley's curiosity piqued, she studied the stranger. His rugged features and piercing blue eyes seemed familiar, but she couldn't place him.

"Thank you," Ashley said, gratitude filling her voice. "I appreciate your help."

The stranger's gaze softened. "You're safe now, Ashley. I won't let Ryan harm you."

Ryan's face reddened. "You think you can protect her? You think you can keep me away?"

The stranger stepped forward, his eyes locked on Ryan. "I know I can."

The tension between them was palpable. Ashley's heart raced, unsure what would happen next.

The stranger's confident stance and piercing gaze made Ryan retreat, his eyes flashing with anger.

"You don't know what you're getting yourself into," Ryan snarled, before turning and disappearing into the crowd.

Ashley breathed a sigh of relief as the stranger turned to her.

"Thank you," she said, her voice trembling. "I owe you one."

The stranger smiled, his eyes crinkling. "No debt, Ashley. I'm just glad I was here."

Ashley's curiosity got the better of her. "Who are you?" she asked.

"My name is Ethan Blackwood," he replied. "I've been investigating Ryan's activities."

Ashley's eyes widened. "Investigating? Why?"

Ethan's expression turned serious. "Ryan's involved in some shady dealings. I aim to bring him down."

Ashley's mind reeled. She had suspected Ryan was trouble, but this?

As they walked away from the crowded street, Ethan explained his connection to Ryan's past and his mission to expose Ryan's wrong doings.
