Chapter Three In a seedy part of Queens, decrepit and broken-down warehouses lined an alley littered with garbage. Trash vats lay strewn all over the narrow cobblestone as rats scurried in and out of open bins in search of food scraps. A stench of death and decay filled the air. One particular building had its door pried open. The marks of a crowbar were visible against the door jamb as the doorknob lay teetering and dented against the door. A flight of stairs led to the second floor of the building where floorboards were broken and knawed away in several places. Rat droppings littered everywhere.
