I heard the front door close as I cleared the lunch dishes from the counter to the dishwasher. Mom and Mia had gone outside after they finished eating when Mia mentioned the pond. Whenever someone complimented a piece of my mother’s landscape, she was always excited to take them on a tour of the property. She had many projects to show off.
Waiting for them to join me in the kitchen, I found the dishwasher pods and threw one into the slot before I closed the door. Before I could press the button, I heard footsteps behind me.

Hands covered my eyes as I stopped what I was doing and began laughing. I took a minute to feel the fingers on my face and played along with the ruse. “Hmm. I have no idea who could have such cold, bony fingers.”
