THE DECISION

Chapter 5: The Decision We waited until Dad woke up before discussing the shoes. Mom and I sat him down, explaining our concerns about the nightmares and his behavior. Dad listened intently, his expression unreadable. When we finished, he took a deep breath. "I know the shoes have been... intense," he said. "But I feel like they're helping me in some way. I just need to figure out how to control them." Mom and I exchanged a skeptical look. "Dad, the shoes are scaring us," I said. "And they're making you have nightmares. Maybe it's time to get rid of them." Dad's face hardened slightly. "I understand your concerns, but I'm not ready to give them up yet. I need to understand what's going on." Mom placed a hand on his arm. "Okay, let's compromise. Why don't we take a break from the shoes for a while? See if things improve without them." Dad hesitated, then nodded slowly. "Alright. I'll try." We decided to take the shoes away from Dad for a week, to see if his behavior and nightmares would improve. The shoes were locked away in a cabinet, and Dad seemed determined to resist their pull. At first, things seemed to be going well. Dad's nightmares decreased, and he appeared more relaxed. But as the days passed, I noticed him growing increasingly restless. One evening, I caught him staring at the cabinet, his eyes fixed longingly on the shoes. "Dad, don't," I said softly. "You don't need them." Dad's gaze snapped back to mine, and for a moment, I saw a glimmer of desperation. "I have to know what's going on," he whispered. I realized then that the shoes had become an obsession for Dad. And I wasn't sure if he could resist their pull.
