"Stay away from this case if you know what's good for you," the text message on Claire’s phone read. She couldn't shake off the eerie feeling it left.
She showed the message to Jack, who frowned. "Looks like someone doesn't want us digging."
"Too bad for them," Claire said, her determination hardening. "We're just getting started.”
Claire turned to Jack. "We've got enough leads to start building a case. Let's head back to the station and start digging."
Jack nodded, and they began to walk towards their car. Before they could get far, Max Hunter appeared again, walking towards them with a confident stride. His dark hair was perfectly styled, and his leather jacket gave him an air of casual defiance.
"Detective Roberts, Officer Wilson," Max greeted them with a slight smirk. "Mind if I have a word?"
"Not now, Hunter," Claire said, her voice ice-cold. "We’re busy."
Max ignored her tone and glanced around. "Looks like a big case. Mind if I tag along?"
"I thought I made it clear we don't need your help," Claire replied, crossing her arms.
Max's smile didn't falter. "I'm not here to step on your toes, Detective. I’m working on a missing person's case, and it might be connected to your murder investigation."
Claire glanced at Jack, her expression tight with skepticism, before turning back to Max Hunter, who stood with an air of nonchalant confidence amidst the tension.
"You've got five minutes, Hunter," Claire said curtly, her tone leaving no room for negotiation. "Start talking."
Max nodded, flipping open his notebook with practiced ease. "Laura King, 32 years old, bartender at The Blue Moon. She vanished without a trace after her shift two nights ago. Her roommate reported her missing when she didn't come home."
Jack raised an eyebrow. "What makes you think it's connected to Thomas Grey?"
Max's gaze flickered with intensity. "Laura had some ties to Grey's law firm. Not as a client, but through acquaintances. She frequented a few of the same places Grey did for business meetings. There's a chance their paths crossed."
Claire folded her arms, studying Max carefully. "And you think this disappearance is related to Grey's murder?"
"It's too early to say for sure," Max admitted. "But Laura was involved in some shady dealings on the side. Rumor has it she was caught up with a group that Grey might have had dealings with—a group known for their underhanded tactics."
Jack leaned in, his interest piqued despite himself. "What kind of dealings?"
Max hesitated, weighing his words carefully. "I've been tracking this group for a while. They operate in the gray areas of the law, specializing in coercion, intimidation, you name it. If Grey was tangled up with them, it could explain a lot."
Claire frowned, processing the information. "Why didn't you come forward with this sooner?"
"I needed to confirm the connection," Max replied evenly. "I didn't want to waste your time with speculation. Now that I have something concrete, I thought it was worth sharing."
"We appreciate the heads-up," Claire conceded reluctantly. "But remember, Max, you're here on our terms. No freelancing."
Max nodded, his expression serious. "Understood, Detective Roberts. I'm here to help."
Claire exchanged a glance with Jack, silently weighing the risks and benefits of Max's involvement. Despite her reservations, the potential link between Laura King's disappearance and Thomas Grey's murder was too significant to ignore.
"Alright," Claire said finally, her tone firm. "Let's head back to the station. Max, you're coming with us. We'll discuss this further once we have all the facts."
As they walked towards their car, Claire couldn't shake the feeling that Max Hunter's appearance had just added a new layer of complexity to an already intricate case.
The drive back to the station was tense. Claire kept her eyes on the road, her mind racing through the new information. Jack was busy making notes, occasionally glancing at Max through the rearview mirror, his expression unreadable.
"So, Max," Jack started, breaking the silence. "This group you've been tracking, do they have a name?"
"They go by 'The Shadow'," Max replied, his tone serious. "Not very imaginative, but effective in their operations. They've got their fingers in all sorts of illegal activities."
"And you think Grey was involved with them?" Claire asked, her grip tightening on the steering wheel.
"It's possible," Max said. "I've seen his name pop up in connection with some of their associates. If Laura was involved with them too, she might have stumbled onto something she shouldn't have."
Claire's mind raced. The Shadow was a name she had heard before, whispers in the underworld of a powerful group that operated in the dark. If Grey and Laura were both tangled up with them, this case was about to get even more dangerous.
When they arrived at the station, Claire led the way to the conference room. She spread out the files on the table, her focus razor-sharp. "Alright, let's lay everything out."
Max joined them, his usual bravado toned down in the face of the serious discussion. "I've got some notes on The Shadow's operations. Places they frequent, people they associate with."
