"Interesting case you've got there, Claire. Let me know if you need a hand. - “M"
The initials "M" at the end left no doubt as to the sender—Max Hunter, the enigmatic private investigator who always seemed to be one step ahead in the world of shadows they occasionally crossed paths in.
Claire frowned slightly at the message. Max's offers of assistance were never without strings attached, and his methods often blurred the lines of legality. She hesitated, weighing the potential benefits of his involvement against the risks it could pose to the integrity of the investigation.
"He's persistent," Jack remarked, noticing Claire's expression.
Claire nodded, slipping her phone back into her pocket. "Persistent and always lurking where he's not wanted."
Jack chuckled softly. "True. But sometimes his unconventional approach pays off."
Claire shot him a skeptical glance. "You think we should entertain his offer?"
Jack shrugged, his tone thoughtful. "Depends. Could be helpful, could be a distraction. We've handled worse."
Claire nodded slowly, considering her options. "Alright. Let's keep him on the periphery for now. See if he stirs up anything useful."
With a nod of agreement, Jack turned his attention back to the task at hand. Together, they resumed their examination of the crime scene, their focus sharpened by the weight of Max Hunter's cryptic message lingering in the air.
Emily, the assistant, was sitting on a nearby bench, wrapped in a blanket provided by one of the officers. Her eyes were red from crying, and she looked up as Claire and Jack approached.
"Emily, I'm Detective Roberts, and this is Officer Wilson," Claire said gently. "We know this is difficult, but we need to ask you some questions."
Emily nodded, her voice barely a whisper. "I'll try to help."
"Can you tell us what happened this morning?" Claire asked, her tone soft but firm.
Emily took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. "I came in early, like I always do, to set up for Mr. Grey's meetings. When I opened the door to his office, I saw him... lying there. There was so much blood. I panicked and called 911 right away."
"Did you touch anything in the office?" Jack asked, his notebook at the ready.
"No," Emily replied, shaking her head emphatically. "I was too scared to move. I just backed out of the room and waited for the police to arrive."
"Did you see or hear anyone else in the building?" Jack continued.
Emily thought for a moment. "No, it was just me. The building is usually quiet this early. I didn't hear anything unusual."
Claire nodded, her mind piecing together the timeline. "How long have you been working for Mr. Grey?"
"About three years," Emily answered. "He was a demanding boss, but he was fair. He always treated me with respect."
"Did Mr. Grey have any enemies that you know of?" Claire asked. "Anyone who might have wanted to harm him?"
Emily hesitated, looking down at her hands. "As a lawyer, he had a lot of clients, and not all of them were nice people. Some of them were quite angry, especially if a case didn't go their way. But he never talked about anyone specific who might want to hurt him."
"Did Mr. Grey seem different recently?" Jack asked. "More stressed or worried than usual?"
Emily frowned, thinking back. "He did seem more on edge lately. He was working on a big case, something about corporate fraud. He said it was going to be a game-changer for his career. He was spending a lot of late nights at the office."
Claire exchanged a glance with Jack. "Do you know any details about this case?"
"Not really," Emily said. "He was very private about his work. But I did notice that he had a lot more meetings with people I didn't recognize. They always seemed very serious, and he was very careful about confidentiality."
"Do you remember any names or faces of these people?" Jack asked.
Emily shook her head. "No, I'm sorry. They were all very formal and didn't interact with me much."
Claire gave Emily a reassuring smile. "You've been very helpful, Emily. We'll need to get in touch with you again if we have more questions. Can you think of anything else, anything at all, that might help us understand what happened?"
Emily bit her lip, thinking hard. "There was one thing. A few days ago, Mr. Grey received a letter. He read it and got really upset. He didn't show me what it said, but he was definitely rattled by it."
"Do you know what happened to the letter?" Claire asked, her interest piqued.
Emily shook her head. "No, he took it with him when he left for the day. I didn't see it after that."
"Thank you, Emily," Claire said, standing up. "You've been very helpful."
As they stepped away, Claire and Jack discussed their next steps.
"We need to look into Grey's clients and recent cases," Claire said. "Maybe there's a lead there."
Jack agreed. "I'll start making calls. We also need to check the security footage from the building."
"Right," Claire said. "Let's see if we can get access to that."
As they headed back to the lobby where the building's security office was located, a familiar figure caught Claire's eye.
