The Dark Thickened

Dr. Adams maintained her composure, though a flicker of something—perhaps sorrow or guilt—crossed her face. "Thomas was my client first and foremost, but over time, we became friends. He trusted me, and I did my best to support him through his struggles." "In what way?" Claire pressed, sensing she was getting closer to the truth. Dr. Adams sighed, looking down at her hands. "Thomas was... struggling. Not just with his work, but with his personal life. He was under immense pressure, and I tried to help him manage that stress. We had a deep connection, but it wasn’t always easy." Claire softened her tone. "I understand this is difficult, Dr. Adams. But anything you can tell me might help us find out who killed Thomas and why. Was there anything specific he said or did that stood out in the days leading up to his death?" Dr. Adams looked up, her eyes meeting Claire’s with a mixture of resolve and vulnerability. "There was one thing," she said slowly. "Thomas mentioned a name—Edward Pierce. He said Pierce was involved in the case he was working on, and that Pierce was even more dangerous than Blake. He was genuinely scared, Detective." Claire’s pulse quickened. Edward Pierce was a key figure she hadn’t connected to Grey’s murder yet. "Thank you, Dr. Adams. This is very helpful. Is there anything else you can think of, anything at all, that might be relevant?" Dr. Adams shook her head. "I wish I could tell you more, Detective. Thomas was a good man, and he didn’t deserve what happened to him. Please, find the people responsible and bring them to justice." Claire stood up, extending her hand. "We will, Dr. Adams. Thank you for your time. If you remember anything else, no matter how small, please contact me." Dr. Adams nodded, shaking Claire’s hand. "I will, Detective. Good luck." As Claire left the office, she couldn’t shake the feeling that Dr. Adams was still holding something back. There was a deeper connection between her and Thomas Grey, something that might be the key to unlocking the full truth of this case. Claire resolved to keep a close eye on Dr. Adams as she continued her investigation into Richard Blake and now, Edward Pierce. Back at the station, Claire shared her findings with Jack. "Dr. Adams was close to Grey, but she claims she didn’t know much about his illegal dealings," Claire said, leaning against her desk. Jack looked thoughtful. "Do you believe her?" "Partially. She seemed genuinely shocked, but there was something she wasn’t saying. I think she knows more than she’s letting on," Claire replied. "We should keep an eye on her," Jack suggested. "People can be very good at hiding things." "Agreed," Claire said. "Let’s keep digging into Grey’s connections. Someone out there knows what happened to him and why." --- As the day wore on, Claire couldn’t shake the feeling that Rachel was hiding something. The psychologist’s reactions had been too measured, too controlled. Claire decided to take a closer look at Rachel’s background. A quick search revealed that Rachel Adams was highly respected in her field, with numerous publications and accolades. But there was also a mention of a scandal from a few years back involving a patient who had accused her of unethical behavior. The charges were dropped, but the stain on her record remained. "Jack, I found something interesting about Dr. Adams," Claire said, calling him over. "She was involved in a scandal a few years ago. A patient accused her of unethical behavior, but the charges were dropped." Jack raised an eyebrow. "Unethical behavior? That sounds like something worth investigating." "Exactly," Claire said. "Let's see if we can find out more about that case. It might give us some insight into her relationship with Grey." As they dug deeper, Claire’s phone buzzed again. This time it was a call from an unknown number. She answered it, her instincts on high alert. "Detective Roberts," she said. "Detective, this is Maya Hernandez from the San Francisco Chronicle. I have some information about Thomas Grey that you might find interesting." Claire’s interest was piqued. "Go on." "Not over the phone. Meet me at the coffee shop on 3rd and Pine in an hour," Maya said before hanging up abruptly. Claire frowned at her phone. "Looks like we have another lead, Jack. Maya Hernandez from the Chronicle wants to meet. She says she has information about Grey." "Think it's worth checking out?" Jack asked. "Definitely," Claire replied. "Let's go see what she has to say." As they left the station, Claire couldn't shake the feeling that they were getting closer to uncovering a web of secrets and lies that went far beyond a simple murder. The pieces of the puzzle were slowly coming together, but the picture they formed was still shrouded in mystery. And Claire was determined to bring it all to light, no matter what it took.
