|| Selene's POV || “I'll deal with you later,” he said flatly. The words should have offended me. Instead, I found myself absurdly relieved that later meant he intended to keep me alive long enough to argue with him. Then his eyes went back to the three wolves, as he ordered, “which pack are you from?” “Why? Do you want to join our pack?” One of them chuckled. “Leave her to us. Then we may consider letting you live.” Another one smirked. “Let me live?” Rowan chuckled. “Interesting!” Apparently, they mistook his amusement for fear. A fatal mistake. “Why are we wasting time talking?” one of them snarled. “Let's kill him.” The man shifted without another word. Bones cracked. Muscles expanded. Dark fur burst across his skin. Within seconds, a half-lycan stood before us. And then I smelled it. As soon as it transformed, the very next moment the rotten trench filled the air. My eyes widened at the realization. They were rogues! But I couldn’t sense them until they shifted to their wolves. Did they pick up a new trick to hide their scents when they are in human forms? Before I could dwell on it further, Rowan moved. One moment he was beside me. The next, he had swept me effortlessly into his arms. A startled gasp escaped my lips. In a single leap, he crossed the river and landed on the opposite bank. The speed was breathtaking. He set me down on a patch of grass far from the approaching rogues. Then he crouched slightly, bringing himself level with me. “Stay here,” he said in a surprisingly gentle tone as he patted my head as if I was some little girl, “and be good.” I felt my cheeks warming up again. My core throbbed with need. His touch was my balm and my poison at the same time. I nodded and then he went back to the rogues. It took only three seconds to cut down all three. The water ran crimson under the moonlight. And before I could even process what exactly happened, Rowan returned by my side. He stood before me, towering and intimidating, his silver eyes fixed on mine. “What the hell are you doing this far from the castle?” he growled. “Why are you all soaked in the river? That too half naked?” Using the tree behind me for support, I pushed myself to my feet. “Why the hell do you care?” I shot back. “According to you, I'm not your Luna. I can go wherever I want. And can do whatever I do. Whether it is taking a bath with the rogues or soaking myself here… that's none of your damn business.” His expression darkened instantly. In the blink of an eye, he was standing right in front of me. “What did you say?” His voice dropped dangerously low. “Say it again.” “I said, I can do as I please!” I yelled. Damn his sweet scent. Damn his closeness. It was making it harder for me to hold back. And my heat was making it worse. “Leave me alone, you brute.” His hands caged mine in an instance before he pushed me against the tree trunk, he sniffed my neck as he said, “you smell f*****g delicious.” His breath touched my neck as he mumbled, “are you on heat, Selene?” His voice was barely human. “Let go of me, you filthy rat! Don't touch me!” I tried to fight instantly though my heart wanted only him. He didn't give up. His free hand curled around my waist. Sparks ran through my skin at his touch. His long nails brushed my skin. “Let go of you? In your dreams!” He growled in protest. Then he licked along my neck, making me go weak on my knees again. His voice rang in my ears, “Tell me, Selene, do you want my help to soothe your heat?” Say what? My eyes widened. I expected him to torture me, to leave me alone on my condition… Why would he even offer? What game was he playing now? I felt his hand moving down to my ass. The panties I was wearing didn't do much to cover my hips. His hand caressed my buttcheek as he nibbled my earlobs, “just say it. Say the word. Or do you prefer to stay here in the river till your heat is subsidized?” The memories of last night flashed in my mind. Don't give in, Selene. He is just toying with you. Just like before. But I couldn’t utter a word. With each touch a thousand butterflies appeared in my stomach. All I could think of was him taking me here against the tree like the beast he was. Only a puff of air left my lips. “You are just playing with me again!” I whispered trying hard to resist him. “You don't actually want to help me.” “Am I?” He looked into my eyes and I was shocked for a second. Rowan's eyes were glowing silver. His voice was rougher. His lycan had probably taken over. His tone was surprisingly gentle. “I don't lie like my human, Selene. I don't play games. Let me help you, my queen.” Did he just call me his queen? Wait, was he for real? His lycan went feral right? He didn't even listen to Rowan anymore. Why was he talking to me then? Why do I care? They are both the same. “Let me go, Rowan. Else I will make you regret it!” I gritted my teeth but my body reacted otherwise. The more I stayed in his embrace, the more I wanted him to take me. “Just leave me alone!” I screamed, frustrated. But he didn't. Instead, he leaned over, his lips brushed mine. His minty breath touched my nostril. “Don't you want me, my queen? Are you sure?” He muttered. I could feel the heat of his lips yet they didn't touch mine. There was barely any gap which made him even more irresistible. My chest rose and fell as my body wanted to reach for him. “Stop me then.” He whispered before his tongue shot out, licking my lips. “Push me away, Selene.” I shivered. Why? Why can't I push him away? Why can't I think straight when he is this close? Why did my world came crumbling when he said those words yesterday? I never relied on a man before… then why now? Why did I want him to take care of me? Why did I want to rely on him? “Stop me if you don’t want me. Push me away and I will leave.” He said again. But I couldn’t. His lips finally touched mine, pecking my lower lip softly. “But if you don’t, my queen, then I am gonna devour every inch of you.” His voice echoed over my ears.
