Chapter 27: Where's Emmry?

1293 Words
Alpha David I had resisted calling Colton and checking up on Emmry all day. I knew I was driving Nady crazy with my constant worry. I was certain I made the right choice having her work with Colton. They were going to be running the pack together anyway. I could just feel that some how Emmry was going to shift. I don’t think I could explain the feeling to anyone but I just knew. When that happened she would become eligible to be the Alpha and Colton would move to be her Beta. I had heard from Matt that she wanted Hope to be her Beta if the time came but Matt and I agreed that it would be best if Colton took the position instead. I would have to convince my daughter of that first. Which was going to be a difficulty task. I thought those two were getting along but now when I mention his name to her or her name to him they act strange. If I didn’t know better I would think something happened between the two of them. They were acting like embarrassed teenagers. Thought I guess Emmry was still a teenager. I checked the clock for the 5th time in the last 10 minutes to see if it was time to go check on her. I had thought about taking her out to dinner to celebrate her first day on the real job. I would have to see what she wanted. After checking the clock again I hear Nady sigh from her desk. “It’s close enough just go home Alpha. You’re driving me crazy!” She teased and then pointed to the door. “Go.” She didn’t have to tell me twice. I left everything just as it was and went to the door. “What would I do without you Nady?” I asked flashing her a smile. She simply rolled her eyes at me. “You would be incompetent.” She gave me a smirk and then pointed at the door again. I laughed and headed towards Colton’s office I wanted to hear all about their day. I hope they worked together. When I got to their office I didn’t smell Emmry’s scent at least not a fresh one. It was like she hadn’t been there for hours. I knocked on the door and saw Colton sitting at his desk. “Hey where’s Emmry?” I asked tilting my head towards her desk. “She went home I think. John said he saw her heading out.” Colton shrugged trying to look indifferent. I could tell he was a bit concerned. “So…she didn’t check out with you…or me.. and you’re telling me you’re relying on John saying my daughter went home?” I gave him a stern look. “Alpha, she just went home. It’ll be fine.” Colton shrugged me off and grabbed his stuff. “Come on. You should go.” He said while walking out the door. I had a feeling that my daughter had not gone home. I was still confused as to how Colton thought Emmry would just leave… “What is going on with you and Emmry?” I asked him as we reached the main entrance. He shrugged his shoulders. “We’re friends.” I wanted to use my Alpha voice on him and force him to tell me the truth but that wouldn’t exactly be fair. “So why did you flinch when she sat next to you?” I asked him. Surprise was on his face, he didn’t realize I caught him. If I caught him then I knew for sure Emmry did. “I didn’t flinch.” He muttered looking away. “There is something you’re not telling me. I want to respect your privacy and hers but if it something that will eventually harm her or effect her well being you will tell me right now Colton.” I stopped walking and looked straight in his eyes. I wanted to know what he wasn’t telling me. “Alpha…come on…” He tried so hard to not look away but he couldn’t help it. “Colton. Now.” I said with a little bit more force. “I think she’s…no I know she’s my mate.” Colton said finally groaning and shaking his head. “Wait…excuse me what?” I blinked at him a few times. She was his mate?! And he never brought it up to me before? “She’s my mate. I didn’t…she can’t feel the mate bond at all. She doesn’t know. I couldn’t. I didn’t want to tell her. She doesn’t understand what mates are…not like shifters do. I wanted…her to like me for me and not because we were ‘destined’ to be together.” Colton tugged on his tie and ran his fingers through his hair. I could understand a little bit of what he was saying. Emmry was a shifter but she didn’t shift yet. There was a strong possibility that she couldn’t feel the physical aspect of being mates but where he was wrong was that she wasn’t able to feel a connection with him. “How do you think she got so close to you so quickly Colton? She might not consciously know that you’re her mate but I promise the shifter part in her does. Hiding it from her is only going to cause you more problems later.” I gave him a stern look before continuing. “You never answered me. Why did you move away?” I crossed my arms. “I… didn’t want to touch her because I didn’t want to feel…I didn’t want to lose control.” Part of what Colton was saying felt true to me but I felt like I was missing something. I was missing part of this story.  “Fine, when you’re ready to talk  about it let me know and we will. Also just talk to her. The look on her face when you flinched away from her was heart breaking.” Colton frowned as if asking what look and I just shrugged at him. I gave him one last look before heading towards the pack house. I walked inside and called out for Emmry. I couldn’t smell a fresh version of her scent here either. It was all from this morning. I was starting to worry now. “Emmry!!” I called out the back door but got now answer. Where is she? I searched the whole house, the meadow, and the park…all of Emmry’s favorite places and she wasn’t there. I mind linked Hope asking if she came to see her and she didn’t. Now I was furious. Colton. Where the hell is my daughter? I nearly yelled at him through the mind link. I could feel his panic as he realized she was not at home. If she was really his mate how could he leave not knowing for sure where she was?! I was ready to shift and tear into Colton. I don’t know Alpha. I’ll find her. His voice actually sounded concerned which brought me back a little bit from my rage. You will find her or I will kill you for losing her. I ran back to the office seeing if I could check the cameras and see if she was seen going anywhere. I swear if that crazy psycho snuck into my office and stole my daughter I was going to kill anyone who stood in my way. I was halfway to the security office when Colton’s voice came through. I found her. She’s fine. Someone saw her go to the 3rd floor back courtyard and her badge must have stopped working at a certain time and she couldn’t get back in. Is she okay?? I asked heading towards the court yard. She seems okay. She’s passed out. I’m guessing she was tired and hungry. I’ll bring her to you. Without waking her. I don’t need her waking up to you carrying her and having her freaking out. I reminded him before sighing. That girl was going to get the longest lecture about making sure to tell people where you are before you exit to the outside…even if it was in a courtyard.
