Gunshots cracked through the dawn air like thunder, shattering the fragile tension inside the Blood Howlers clubhouse. I pressed my back against the cold concrete wall as Ryker shoved me behind his massive frame, his leather cut brushing my cheek. The rogue Alphas moved like shadows - Jax to the left, Kai and Zane covering the windows, Draco already kicking open the weapons locker and tossing silver-loaded rifles like they were toys.
"Stay down," Ryker growled, his voice a low rumble that vibrated through my chest. His golden eyes flicked to me, possession and fury burning bright. One hand still gripped my waist, fingers digging in as if afraid I'd vanish again. The heat of his touch reminded me of that night three years ago- chained to his bed, his heavy body pressing me into the mattress while he stripped away every defense I had.
Outside, Darius's voice boomed through a megaphone, laced with jealous rage. "Rhea! Come out and face me, you treacherous b***h! Bring my son home where he belongs!"
My stomach twitched. Leo, my little boy with eyes too much like Ryker's. The photo from the blackmailer in my mind - silver chains glowing around his tiny wrist. I couldn't wait for noon. I had to act now.
A window exploded inward in a spray of glass. Two Silver Moon enforcers burst through, shifting mid-leap into massive wolves with bared fangs. Jax met the first one head-on, slamming a fist into its jaw with bone-crunching force. The second lunged for me, but Kai intercepted, tackling it to the floor in a snarling heap. The air filled with growls, the wet sound of fist on flesh, and the metallic tang of blood.
"Get her to the safe room!" Zane shouted, firing a shot that dropped another intruder at the doorway.
Ryker didn't move. Instead, he spun me around, backing me against the wall with his body. His thigh pressed against mine, caging me completely as chaos erupted around us. "You're not going anywhere without me," he rasped, forehead pressing to mine. His breath was hot, ragged. "Not this time, Rhea. You ran once, never again."
The intensity in his gaze pinned me harder than his hands ever could. My pulse raced, a dangerous mix of fear and that old, traitorous heat pooling low in my belly. I hated how my body responded - arching slightly into him, remembering the way he had claimed me so completely that night, growling mine while laughing, and walking away.
"Ryker..." I started, but his mouth crashed down on mine, hard and desperate. It wasn't gentle. Teeth nipped, tongue invaded, claiming me in the middle of gunfire and howls. His hand slid under my surgeon's coat, palm scorching against the red dress clinging to my skin. For one stolen second, the world narrowed to him - the curse that bound us, the obsession that refused to let go.
A bullet whizzed past, embedding in the wall inches from my head. Ryker broke the kiss with a snarl, shielding me with his body as he returned fire. "Draco! Flank them!"
Draco moved like smoke, slipping out a side door with Zane. Jax and Kai stayed close, their eyes darting to me between strikes. Jax's jaw was clenched so tight the muscles jumped. During a brief lull, he stepped nearer, his shoulders brushing mine as he reloaded. The contact sent a spark racing across my skin- forbidden and electric. The blood pact hummed in the air like a live wire. One deliberate touch and it would snap.
"Rhea," Jax muttered, voice strained, eyes dark with hunger. "If this goes south... the pact won't matter. We'll burn everything for you and the pup. All four of us."
Kai's gaze burned from across the room, his wolf peeking through as he pinned an enforcer. "He's right. You feel it. We've wanted you since you were just our best friend's little sister. Now you're here, smelling like surgeon steel and queen fire. It's driving us insane."
The words hit like a scalpel to the heart. Tension coiled tighter. Ryker's growl deepened, his arm banding around me possessively. "Touch her and die. Pact or no pact."
Before the standoff could explode, the front doors burst open. Darius strode in flanked by six enforcers, his face twisted in jealousy. His eyes locked on me- on Ryker's hand still possessively on my waist, on my swollen lips - and he roared.
"You let him touch you again? After everything? He's the monster who cursed our bond!"
Darius lunged, shifting partially, claws extending. Ryker met him halfway, the two Alphas colliding in a blur of muscle and fury. Fists flew, blood sprayed. The rogue Alphas joined the fray, but their attention kept flicking back to me, the pact straining with every protective step they took in my direction.
I grabbed a fallen rifle, heart pounding. This wasn't just a rescue. It was my strike back beginning in blood. I fired at an enforcer aiming for Ryker's back, the shot precise- surgeon's steady hands. The man dropped.
Darius broke free for a second, eyes wild on me. "Rhea! The widow is dying because of you! Come back. Be my Luna again. The pup needs his real father!"
"Lies," I spat, voice cutting through the chaos. " You discarded me. Chained me to him." I gestured at Ryker, who was now slamming Darius into a pool table. " Now I'm the one holding the scalpel. Tell your blackmailer to release my son, or I'll let your precious Luna bleed out on my table tomorrow."
Darius laughed through bloody lips, but doubt flickered in his eyes. "You wouldn't. You're still the soft-hearted girl I..."
A new voice cut him off- female, weak but venomous - from a hidden speaker in the room. The widow. " She would. She's already tasted ruin. But Darius... the boy is safe for now. Bring her to the training grounds. Make her watch what happens when a cursed pup tries to shift without his true pack."
Static crackled. The line is dead. The room froze for a heartbeat.
Then Ryker headbutted Darius, sending him staggering. "Where is the boy?!"
Darius wiped blood from his mouth, smirking despite the beating. "Safe. For now. But the silver is already weakening him. Noon. Training grounds. Come with your dogs if you want... but Rhea comes alone first. Or the shifts early and dies in agony."
My blood ran cold. Leo's first shift- forced, suppressed, dangerous. I could lose him before I even held him again.
Ryker's eyes met mine, raw obsession and protection burning. The rogue Alphas closed in, their bodies tense, the pact one breath away from breaking as they shielded me from the retreating Silver Moon enforcers.
Darius and his men backed towards the door, but not before he delivered the final blow. "Oh, and Rhea? I know about the mate bond reactivation. By tonight, you'll be back in my bed...and the Lycan King will be nothing but a memory."
They vanished into the morning light, tires screeching.
Silence fell, broken only by heavy breathing and the drip of blood on concrete.
Ryker turned to me, pulling me close again, his hand cupping my face with surprising gentleness amid the violence. "We ride at eleven. Together. No more alone."
But Jax stepped forward, voice low and strained. " Boss... there's a problem. One of our scouts just reported - the widow isn't dying. She's pregnant with Darius's pup. And they're using Leo as leverage to force Rhea into a remating ritual that could break your curse permanently...and bind her to the Silver Moon forever."
The revelation landed like a bomb. Ryker's grip tightened painfully. The rogue Alphas exchanged dark looks, hunger and loyalty warring in their eyes.
My mind raced- surgery, runes, revenge plans shifting in seconds. But one truth burned brighter than the rest.
The war just wasn't for my son anymore.
It was for my freedom... and every man in this room wanted a piece of it.
