Chapter 8

The ice beneath us groaned like a dying beast, spiderweb cracks racing outward from the widow's detonated runes. I clutched Leo tight against my chest, his small body still trembling from the partial shift, golden fur flickering along his arms. The widow's dark energy pulsed in the air, trying to drag Ryker's curse mark off my skin and transfer to her swollen belly. Every Alpha surrounding me waited for my answer. Ryker's golden eyes burned into mine, raw obsession and fury etched on his face. Blood streaked his leather cut from the fight, his massive chest heaving. "Rhea," he growled, voice low and commanding, "don't you dare submit. You're mine. Fight with me." Kai still had his arm banded around my waist, his body pressed against my back, heat radiating through the thin red dress. His breath ghosted my neck. "Choose us, Rhea—the four of us. We'll protect the pup with our lives. No curse. No chains. Just us claiming what we've wanted for years." Jax stepped closer on my left, his hand sliding boldly along my hip, fingers digging in possessively. Zane and Draco flanked the other sides, their touches no longer hesitant. Darius laughed from a few feet away, claws extended, enforcers closing in. "Listen to them fighting over scraps. You were always just a tool, Rhea. Submit to the ritual. And let the boy live as my heir until I decide otherwise." Leo whimpered in my arms, his golden eyes locking on mine. "Mummy...am scared..." That single word snapped something inside me. The broken Luna who had been discarded was gone. The queen who had spent three years sharpening her scalpel and her revenge rose fully. I shoved Kai's arm away with surprising strength, the curse mark on my collarbone flaring bright red. "None of you gets to decide for me." With surgeon's precision, I drove the glowing wolf claw scalpel into the largest remaining rune on the ice. The blade sank deep, and the counter runes I had etched into the metal months ago activated in a burst of silver and crimson light. The widow screamed as her dark energy recoiled, slamming back into her. The transfer halted mid-flow. The ice shattered completely. A massive fissure opened beneath us. Chunks of frozen rink plunged into black water below. Chaos erupted. Wolves howled. Enforcers slipped and fell. Ryker lunged forward, grabbing Leo from my arms and tossing him safely to Draco, who caught the boy and retreated toward the edge with protective fury. Darius charged towards me, but Ryker intercepted, the two Alphas colliding in a brutal clash of claws and fists. Blood sprayed across the breaking ice. Ryker's roar shook the air. "She belongs to no one but herself!" But the rogue Alphas refused to back down. Jax grabbed my wrist, spinning me into his chest. His mouth crashed down on mine in a fierce, claiming kiss, teeth nipping, tongue demanding. For one electric second, years of restrained hunger poured into me. His hand slid down my back, gripping hard enough to bruise. "You feel that?" he growled against my lips. "That's what real pack feels like." Before I could pull away, Kai turned me again, his thigh pressing between my legs as he pinned me briefly against his solid frame. "We've watched you suffer long enough," he rasped, lips brushing my ear, hand boldly cupping my ass through the red dress. "Let us ruin every memory of them. Right here. Right now." Zane closed in, hands roaming, palms flattering over my stomach, Jax's fingers tangling in my hair. My body responded despite the danger, heat pooling low, skin tingling where they touched. The queen in me recognized the power I had over them. The woman in me felt the terrifying thrill of being wanted so violently after being thrown away. Ryker's enraged bellow cut through everything. He broke free from Darius and slammed into the group, ripping me out of their hands with brutal force. "Touch her again and I will rip your throats out!" He crushed me against his chest. "You're mine, Rhea Frost. The curse. The obsession. The queen. All of it." Suddenly the ice gave way completely under our feet. We plunged downward. Cold black water closed over my head. The shock stole my breath. Leo's cry echoed from above as Draco held him safely on a remaining chunk of ice. Strong arms wrapped around me- Ryker pulling me up breaking the surface with a gasp. The other rogue Alpas surfaced around us, swimming closer, their eyes still glowing with unresolved hunger. Darius stood at the edge of the remaining ice, laughing triumphantly. The widow raised her hands, dark energy swirling again. "The ritual isn't over yet. The cursed transfers now - Ryker loses his powers, the boy becomes Silver Moon's weapon, Rhea returns to my bed." But something had shifted inside me. The counter runes I had carved were working. The curse mark on my collarbone burned brighter, not transferring but awakening. Power surged through my veins- Lycan strength I had never fully accessed before. My eyes glowed golden Ryker's and Leo's. I surfaced fully, standing on a floating ice chunk. "No," I said, voice carrying across the water like a queen's command. "The curse doesn't transfer. It evolves. And it's mine to break or weird." Leo reached for me, his small body stabilizing as the suppressants and my counter runes took hold. Draco handed him over carefully, the Alpha's hand lingering on my arm a second too long. Darius' face twisted in rage. "Impossible!" The widow screamed as her own runes backfired again, weakening her. But as I held Leo close, the real blow came from an unexpected source. One of the rogue Alphas -Zane- stepped onto the ice beside me, his expression dark. "There's something you need to know, Rhea. Before choosing any of us." He pulled out a small data drive from his cut. "We've been watching Darius for years. The widow... she's not just carrying his pup. She's carrying a hybrid engineered with your stolen DNA. From the night they chained you to Ryker. They planned this from the beginning, to create a perfect heir using your bloodline and his curse." The revelation hit like a second plunge into the freezing water. Ryker's eyes widened in fury. The other rogue Alphas tensed. Darius smirked. "Too late to stop it now. The ritual was completed at midnight. Submit, Rhea... or lose everything when the true heir is born stronger than your cursed son ever could be." The ice continued to fracture around us. Leo clung tighter. Midnight was only hours away. And my carefully laid out trap had just been turned against me in the worst possible way.
