Chapter 22

3 AM came wrapped in freezing fog and the scent of impending blood. We rode hard through the back roads, the five of us cutting through the darkness like a blade. Leo’s safety was the only thing that mattered. The message said Elias had already sent a team after the real sanctuary. We had minutes, maybe less. The old pack house ruins appeared ahead, half-destroyed walls glowing with faint red runes. Elias stood in the center, calm and composed, as if he had been expecting us all along. Ryker killed the engine. His hand squeezed my thigh once — a silent “stay close.” The rogue Alphas dismounted behind us, forming a protective wall. Jax and Kai flanked me, Zane and Draco covering the rear. The air crackled with their combined presence and the broken pact’s lingering tension. “Elias,” I called, stepping forward with my glowing scalpel in hand. “Where is the team you sent after my son?” Elias smiled, silver-streaked hair catching the moonlight. “Already on their way. But I can call them off. All you have to do is give me what I want — the full awakened curse. Transfer it to me willingly, and Leo lives. Refuse… and you’ll never see him again.” Ryker growled and moved to stand beside me. “You’re not touching her.” The rogue Alphas shifted closer, their bodies brushing mine. Kai’s hand settled on my lower back. Jax’s shoulder pressed against mine. The curse threads between all of us flared in response, feeding me strength even as they tightened. Elias laughed softly. “Look at you. Five powerful males bound to one woman. The curse is already corrupting you. Soon you won’t know where your desires end and its hunger begins.” He raised his hand. A group of elite enforcers stepped out from the ruins, surrounding us. At the center of them was the widow — or what was left of her. The hybrid had almost completely taken over, her eyes pure gold, body radiating unstable curse energy. “She’s the key,” Elias said. “Kill her, and the hybrid dies with her. But the moment you do, my team reaches the sanctuary.” The choice hung in the air like a guillotine. I didn’t hesitate. I anchored the curse through Ryker and pushed forward, red energy exploding from my scalpel in a controlled wave. The widow/hybrid screamed as the binding hit her, but she fought back with vicious power. The ground shook. Ice cracked beneath our feet even though we weren’t on the rink. Ryker and the rogue Alphas exploded into motion. Jax and Kai tore into the enforcers with savage efficiency. Zane and Draco shifted partially, wolves ripping through the lines. Ryker stayed glued to my side, fighting anyone who tried to reach me while I focused on the widow. The hybrid lunged at me, claws extended. I slashed upward, pouring everything I had into the strike. The curse flared violently between us. Pain exploded in my chest, but I held on, using Ryker as my anchor. The power flowed steadier this time — shared, not stolen. The widow shrieked as the hybrid inside her began to unravel. But Elias wasn’t finished. He raised a small device and pressed a button. “Too late.” A message came through on my phone — a live feed. A black SUV racing down a mountain road. Elias’s team. They were close to Leo’s transport. “No!” I screamed. The curse surged wildly. Gold flooded my eyes again. For a terrifying moment, the power threatened to take over completely. Ryker grabbed my face with both hands. “Rhea! Stay with me. Anchor it. You’re stronger than this.” Kai pressed against my back, his arms wrapping around my waist. “We’ve got you. Breathe.” Their combined touch grounded me. The gold receded. I refocused and sent one final, devastating wave of controlled power straight into the widow. She collapsed, the hybrid dissolving into fading red mist. Elias staggered as the backlash hit him. But the damage was done. The live feed showed Elias’s team closing in on Leo’s vehicle. Ryker roared and charged Elias, slamming him against a ruined wall. “Call them off!” Elias laughed through blood. “It’s already done. The only way to stop them now is if Rhea gives me the curse willingly. Right here. Right now.” The rogue Alphas surrounded us, breathing hard, eyes glowing. They were battered, bleeding, but still standing — still looking at me with that dangerous mix of hunger and devotion. I felt the full weight of the curse pressing down on all of us. The bonds were so tight now that I could almost hear their thoughts — Ryker’s fierce possession, the rogue Alphas’ desperate need to protect and claim. I stepped forward, scalpel raised. “Fine,” I said coldly. “You want the curse? Take it.” I slashed my palm and pressed it against Elias’s chest, channeling the power directly into him. He gasped, eyes widening in triumph — then in horror as I twisted the flow. The curse didn’t transfer. It attacked. Red energy exploded inside him, the awakened power rejecting him completely. Elias screamed as the curse burned through his veins, punishing him for trying to steal what was never his. He dropped to his knees, convulsing. But the live feed on my phone still showed the enemy team closing in. Ryker grabbed me. “We ride now. All of us.” The rogue Alphas moved as one. We ran for the bikes, engines roaring to life. As we tore down the road toward Leo’s location, I felt the curse settle deeper inside me — stronger, more dangerous, and more tightly bound to the five males riding with me. We were faster. We had to be. Because if we were even one minute late, the queen would lose everything she had fought for.
