Chapter 2

The old hockey rink sat abandoned on the edge of the city like a forgotten tomb, its cracked ice surface glittering under a thin layer of fresh frost. Midnight wind howled through the broken boards, carrying the faint scent of blood and old rivalries. I pulled my black coat tighter around my surgeon's scrubs, the scalpel I'd slipped into my boot pressing cold against my ankle. I had come alone. Ryker had wanted to follow, his golden eyes flashing with barely contained rage when I slipped out of the clinic, but one look at the message and I knew the blackmailer meant every word. The pup- our son- could not be risked. Not yet. My boots crunched on the frozen ground as I stepped onto the ice. The rink lights flicked overhead, casting long, jagged shadows that danced like wolves circling prey. Every nerve in my body screamed danger. Three years of hiding, of building my reputation as the realm's top surgeon, of burying the broken Luna I once was... and now someone had dug up the one secret that could destroy everything. A figure emerged from the darkened penalty box. Tall, hooded, moving with the fluid grace of a shifter who knew how to hunt. The scent hit me a second later- Silver Moon Pack, but laced with something sharper - betrayal. "You came," the voice rasped, low and mocking. The hood fell back, revealing Marcus Kane- Darius beta and the man who helped chain me to Ryker's bed that fateful night. His eyes gleamed with cruel satisfaction. "Rhea Frost or should I call you Luna Voss? The wolfless sacrifice who somehow crawled back from the dead." My hands clenched at my sides. "You have ten seconds to tell me what you want before I decide whether to save your life or end it on this ice." Marcus laughed, the sound echoing off the empty stands. "Bold words for a woman whose secret pup carries the Lycan King's curse in his veins. Golden eyes, unnatural strength at only three years old...the pack would tear him apart if they knew. Or worse...Darius would claim him as his own just to spite you again." Ice flooded my veins, colder than the rink beneath my feet. "How did you find out?" "Does it matter?" He stepped closer, boots scraping ice. " What matters is the price. You will refuse to operate on Darius Luna tomorrow. Let her die on your table. Then you will publicly reject King Ryker Thorne and return to Silver Moon as Darius's chosen mate and play the devoted wife again. Help us destroy the Blood Howlers from within. Do this and your pup lives in secret. Refuse... and I send the DNA results to every Alpha on the continent tonight." My heart slammed against my ribs. The curse. My son, the fragile life I had protected with every scalpel cut and late-night surgery. "You're insane. Darius already discarded me once. Why would he want me back?" "Because you're the key to breaking Ryker's curse," Marcus snarled, eyes narrowing. " And because the widow is failing. She can't give him more pups. But you... You already did, with the enemy." He lunged forward, grabbing my wrist hard enough to bruise. " Or maybe I just enjoy watching powerful women kneel like you did that night in the Lycan King's bed." Rage and old terror surged through me. I twisted, slamming my free elbow into his throat. Marcus staggered back, choking but recovered fast. He reached for me again, this time aiming to pin me against the boards. Suddenly, the rink lights flared brighter. The roar of a motorcycle engine shattered the night. Headlights cut through the darkness as the black beast of a bike tore into the ice, tires spitting frost and sparks. Ryker dismounted in one fluid motion, leather cut flapping, golden eyes blazing with lethal fury. Behind him, two of his rogue enforcers - Jax and another one I recognized as Kai- flanked the entrance, their postures coiled and ready. "You touched what's mine," Ryker growled, voice carrying across the ice like thunder. He moved like a predator, massive frame eating the distance between us in seconds. Marcus spun, pulling a silver dagger from his coat- the kind designed to poison Lycan blood. "Stay back, King," Marcus warned. " This is pack business. The pup..." Ryker didn't let him finish. He slammed into Marcus with the force of a hockey check, sending the beta crashing into the boards hard enough to splinter wood. The dagger clattered across the ice. I dove for it, fingers closing around the hilt just as Jax and Kai moved in, their eyes locking on me with that familiar dark hunger- the blood pact burning in their gazes. " Rhea," Jax said, voice rough, stepping closer despite the tension. His hand twitched as if fighting the urge to reach for me. "You shouldn't be here alone. The pact..." "Save the concern," I snapped, rising with the dagger in hand. My coat flared open, revealing the red fabric beneath, a reminder of the queen I was becoming. "This is my fight." Ryker hauled Marcus up by the throat, muscles straining under his cut. " Who sent you, Darius or the widow?" Marcus gasped, blood trickling from his lips. "Both. And more, the entire Silver Moon council knows about the boy now. They are coming for him at dawn unless she complies." The words hit like a blade to the gut. Dawn! That was too soon. My mind raced - surgery schedules, hospital security, the secret location where I had hidden my son with a trusted human nanny. One leak and everything would burn. Ryker's eyes met mine over Marcus's struggling form. Possession, protection, and something deeper -obsession- burned there. " We ride now, get the pup, and burn all evidence." But before we could move, tired screeched from the far end of the rink. Another vehicle, a black SUV with Silver Moon plates barreled onto the ice, doors flying open. Four more enforcers poured out, Darius at their head, face twisted in jealous rage. "Rhea!" Darius bellowed, eyes darting between Ryker and me. "Get away from him! You're still mine!" Chaos erupted. Jax and Kai moved instinctively towards me, their bodies shielding mine on pure reflex, the pact straining at the edges. Ryker dropped Marcus and charged towards Darius, the two Alphas colliding with bone-crunching force. Fists flew, growls filled the air. The ice cracked under their power. I stood in the center, dagger raised, heart pounding with a mix of fear and savage thrill. This was the beginning of my strike back, the moment the ghost Luna became the queen who made them all pay. Suddenly my phone vibrated in my pocket. Another unknown message. I glanced through, blood turning to ice. Too late, the boy is already with us. Come to the clubhouse alone at dawn or watch your son take his first shift under the Silver Moon chains.' A roar tore from Ryker's throat as he sensed my panic. Darius laughed through bloody lips. The game had just escalated into war. And the first casualty would be whoever stood between my child and me.
