The old pack house loomed ahead like a tomb carved from stone and moonlight. One hour until midnight. My heart hammered against my ribs as Ryker's bike roared through the final stretch of forest road, the rest of the convoy close behind. I clutched the data drive in my pocket, the widow's chilling message still burning in my mind. Counter the hybrid and Ryker dies. Save my king and risk my son.
We killed the engines at the treeline. Ryker pulled me off the bike, his massive hands gripping my waist with bruising force. His golden eyes bored into mine, voice low and urgent. "Whatever happens in there, you stay behind me. The cursed is ours. Not theirs."
Before I could answer, the rogue Alphas surrounded us. Jax's hand brushed my arm, Kai stepped in close enough that his chest grazed my shoulder, Zane and Draco flanking like wolves on the hunt. The broken pact hummed between them like wire. Their predatory stares were no longer restrained.
Kai's voice was rough. "The pup is blood. He's our brother's nephew. We're not loosing him or you to Silver Moon."
The words hit hard, reminding me why these four dangerous men were willing to risk everything.
Darius's voice boomed from hidden speakers. "Time's up, Rhea. Come inside alone."
I took a steadying breath, surgeon's calm settling over me. "I go in as the summoned doctor. You create the chaos. When the widow is vulnerable during labor, I counter the hybrid. Ryker, stay close."
Ryker snarled but nodded. The rogue Alphas melted into the shadows to hut the perimeter.
I walked through the grand doors alone, white coat over my tactical gear, medical bag in hand. The central ritual hall was lit with black candles and glowing runes. The widow lay on a raised altar, belly swollen, face twisted in pain as contractions hit. Darius stood beside her, eyes lighting up with triumph when he saw me.
"You came," he said, voice dripping with satisfaction. "Smart choice."
I kept my expression cold. "I'm here to save lives. Not play your games."
As I approached the altar, the air thickened with dark magic. The hybrid inside the widow kicked violently, red energy pulsing through her skin, my stolen DNA mixed with Ryker's curse. I could feel the ancient power stirring in my own veins, the awakened curse responding like a living thing.
I placed my hands on the widow's belly, pretending to examine her while secretly injecting the counter agent I'd prepared. The widow gasped, eyes widening. "What are you..."
Alarms blared. Explosions rocked the outer walls as Ryker and the rogue Alphas breached the perimeter. Gunshots and howls filled the night.
Darius lunged for me, but Ryker's burst through the side entrance like a a force of nature, leather cut bloodied, golden eyes blazing. He slammed into Darius with savage force. The two Alphas crashed into the altar, cracking stone.
Chaos erupted.
The four rogue Alphas poured in behind him, fighting through enforcers. Jax and Kai fought their way towards me, their eyes finding mine even in battle. Zane and Draco guarded the exits, wolves snarling.
The widow screamed as another contraction hit. The hybrids energy spiked. I pushed harder with the suppressants, but the cursed in my blood flared in response. Power surged through me, I could feel the threads of Alpha bonds around the room. Darius's old mate bond, Ryker's mark, and the fragile threads connecting the rogue Alphas.
I could break them all if I wanted.
The widow's eyes widened in horror. "No... you can't..."
Ryker roared as Darius landed a brutal blow, sending him staggering. Blood trickled from his mouth. The widow laughed weakly. "If you counter the hybrid now, the rebound will kill him. Choose, Surgeon. Your king or your son."
Leo's face flashed in my mind. Then Ryker's possessive growl from the safe house. The rogue Alpha's hungry touches. The queen inside me refused to choose between destruction and submission.
Instead, I did something none of them expected.
I slammed my glowing scalpel into the center of the ritual circle, channeling the awakened curse through the blade. Red energy exploded outward like lightening. The hybrid's power recoiled violently, but instead of rebounding on Ryker, it shattered the widow's control and weakened every Alpha bond in the room.
Darius staggered. Ryker straightened, eyes widening as new strength flooded him. The rogue Alphas roared, their bodies glowing with unleashed power, the pact fully shattered in that moment.
"You b***h!" Darius snarled, shifting partially and charging me.
Ryker intercepted him again, but this time the rogue Alphas joined the fray with feral intensity. Jax tackled one enforcer, Kai flanked my side, their movement now completely unrestrained.
The widow screamed as labor accelerated. The hybrid was coming to fast and too strong.
I stood over her, scalpel raised, the awakened cause pulsing in my veins like fire. "This ends tonight."
But as the first cry of the hybrid pup echoed through the hall, a new presence stepped from the shadows - my best friend's father, eyes dark with long hidden hunger.
He looked at me, then at Ryker and the rogue Alpha fighting for dominance.
"Rhea," he said, voice smooth and dangerous. "You don't have to do this alone. I can give you a better choice."
The room froze for a split second.
Then the hybrid pup let out a powerful howl that shook the walls, it's eyes glowing with stolen curse energy.
Ryker's head snapped towards the sound, fear and rage flashing across his face for the first time
I had began to play my card...but the game had just gained a deadly new player.
