CHAPTER FIVE
The melodious strains of orchestra music playing "The Way You Look Tonight" filled the elegant hall of the country club and floated out onto the terrace past the swimming pool and across the well tended golf course. The most influential members of the community were gathered for the biggest social event on the club calendar. Fashionably dressed matrons drifted about the polished dance floor with each other's husbands. The friendly tinkle of ice in glasses and the murmur of polite conversations blended with the sound of the music.
It was the best club party of the season and everyone seemed to be having a good time. The buffet table was filled with tempting delicacies, and the bar was well stocked, as usual, with every imaginable liquor.
