4I’m learning everything I can about sailing. I read about practical things like hypothermia, Danforth and CQR anchors, starboard and port lights, drogues. I read about emergency signalling and the difference between VHF (very high frequency) and SSB (single side band) radios. VHF is used for line of sight communication and SSB, which bounces off the ionosphere, is used to send messages across larger distances. We use SSB to communicate with Auckland Cruising back in New Zealand and will use VHF to get in touch with customs when we arrive in Suva. I focus in on the secret detail of anchor weight and shape.
