DEDICATION AND ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Dedicated to my children: Laura, Sebastian and Madeleine. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT FOR THE TRILOGY Firstly, a big thank you to all my teachers, in particular Tarchin Hearn, Namgyal Rinpoche, Cecilie Kwiat and Lama Mark Webber. Without them, my life would have been very different and these books would never have been written. I am very grateful to my mother, Margaret Peart, for her continued support for my writing over the last ten years and for her meticulous proofreading. She has helped me hold these stories right from the beginning to the end. I am immensely grateful to Brian Thurogood, my dearest friend and editor, for his love and support and his endless constructive feedback which enabled these books to be completed and published. Huge thanks to my father, Lindsay Peart, who took me away sailing and ‘grew me up’ on the land and ocean. I am most appreciative of the patience and good spiritedness of my children, who joined me on many of the adventures in these stories. Sebastian, thank you for refining the voice of Oliver. Thank you to all my students. You helped me hone my insights and provided a focus for the stories. Many friends have read and helped me with my ideas and language, in particular Dido Dunlop, who had the first go at teaching me how to write, and Lisa O’Brien, who edited my stories in the early days. Thank you to my creative writing teachers at Auckland University of Technology, in particular Mike Johnson and Stephanie Johnson. You made me believe my story could be told well.
