Chapter 7

940 Words
The morning air outside Vance & Associates was crisp with the sharp edge of early autumn, but inside the private executive suite on the forty-second floor, the atmosphere was charged with a completely different kind of heat. Elena stood before the floor-to-ceiling mirror, her fingers smoothing down the fabric of a sharp, tailored crimson dress she had chosen for the day. It was a calculated departure from her usual charcoal and navy corporate armor—a subtle declaration to the world, and perhaps to herself, that the ice queen was gone. In her place stood a woman who had reclaimed her heart. On her left ring finger, the vintage diamond caught the golden sunlight filtering through the glass, throwing tiny prisms of light across the minimalist white walls. Every time she looked down at it, a quiet, involuntary shiver of disbelief and profound relief coursed through her veins. A gentle, double knock sounded at the heavy mahogany door before it clicked open. Sarah stepped inside, holding a thick leather-bound folio, her usual clinical professionalism momentarily displaced by an expression of wide-eyed curiosity. "Ms. Vance—sorry, Elena," Sarah corrected herself with a slight, knowing grin that she tried and failed to suppress. "The legal representatives from Sterling Industries have arrived in the main conference room. Mr. Sterling requested a five-minute private consultation with you before the formal signing ceremony begins." Elena turned away from the mirror, her composure instantly sliding back into place, though her eyes betrayed a warmth that hadn't been there a week ago. "Thank you, Sarah," Elena replied smoothly, picking up her matching crimson portfolio. "Tell them I’ll be right there." As Sarah slipped out and closed the door, Elena took one final, steadying breath. Control the narrative, she reminded herself instinctively. But for the first time in five years, she didn't feel the need to control every single variable. For the first time, she was willing to let the future unfold without a safety net. When Elena pushed open the heavy glass door of the executive conference room, the space was empty save for one man. Julian stood by the far window, his back to the door as he looked out over the sprawling Manhattan skyline. He had discarded his suit jacket, his crisp white shirtsleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the lean, powerful lines of his upper body. The sunlight framed his tall silhouette, casting a warm halo over his dark hair. At the sound of the door clicking shut, he turned around. For a fraction of a second, neither of them spoke. The heavy silence of the room filled with an electric, unspoken intimacy that made the air feel thin. Julian’s gaze swept over her—taking in the crimson dress, the proud tilt of her chin, and most importantly, the small, glittering diamond resting securely on her left hand. A slow, breathtaking smile broke across his face—a smile that chased away the last lingering shadows of the past five years. "You look breathtaking," Julian murmured, his rich, low voice cutting through the quiet as he closed the distance between them with unhurried strides. "You’re supposed to be reviewing the final asset allocation clauses, Mr. Sterling," Elena countered, though her voice lacked its usual icy defense. Her lips twitched upward in spite of herself. "A CEO shouldn't be slacking off before a multi-billion-dollar acquisition." Julian stopped just inches away from her, the clean cedarwood and amber scent of him wrapping around her senses like a physical embrace. He didn't touch her yet, but his hazel eyes held hers with a fierce, absolute devotion that made her knees weak. "Let the board wait," Julian whispered, lifting a hand to gently tuck a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear, his knuckles brushing against her warm skin. "I spent five years following every corporate rule book in existence, and look where it got me—miserable, lonely, and wondering what could have been. I’m done following rules that keep me away from you." Elena’s heart did a fierce, erratic flip against her ribs. She reached up, resting her palm flat against the crisp fabric of his shirt, right over his steady, beating heart. "Good," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "Because my terms are non-negotiable. No more running. No more secrets. And definitely no more five-year absences." "Agreed," Julian murmured softly. He leaned down, pressing a tender, lingering kiss to her forehead, right where her brow had so often furrowed over endless legal briefs. "Signed, sealed, and delivered for the rest of my life." Before either of them could pull away, a sharp, polite cough echoed from the doorway. They both turned to find Marcus Vance standing awkwardly in the doorway, holding a stack of supplementary tax documents, his eyes darting frantically between the floor and the ceiling as if he had interrupted a state secret. "Um... sorry to interrupt the litigation," Marcus cleared his throat, offering an apologetic grimace. "But the board members and the press are assembling in the main auditorium for the live broadcast. If we don't head down in three minutes, the media outlets are going to think the merger has collapsed." Julian let out a soft, low chuckle, sliding his hand down to intertwine his fingers securely with Elena’s. "Tell them the merger is more secure than ever, Marcus," Julian said, his eyes never leaving Elena’s face as a wicked, confident grin touched his lips. "We’re just finalizing the permanent acquisition terms."
