Chapter 4

The contact of Julian's thumb against Elena’s cheek felt less like a touch and more like a live wire hitting bare skin. A tremor rippled down her spine, threatening to dismantle every ounce of self-control she had cultivated over five agonizing years. For a heartbeat, she leaned into the warmth of his palm, inhaling the familiar cedarwood scent that had haunted her quietest nights. Then reality rushed back in with the force of a tidal wave. Elena pulled away sharply, stepping back until the edge of the conference table pressed hard against her lower back. She raised her chin, her eyes flashing with a mix of self-reproach and defensive fury. She reached up, roughly wiping the trace of moisture from her skin as if erasing a brand. "Don't do that," she whispered, her voice tight and trembling with suppressed rage. "Don't touch me, Julian. You lost the right to wipe my tears the day you walked out that door without looking back." Julian’s hand lingered in the empty air for a fraction of a second before dropping slowly to his side. The raw, vulnerable look in his hazel eyes vanished behind a heavy curtain of exhaustion and regret, replaced once again by the solemn stillness of a man accustomed to carrying unbearable weight. "You're right," he said quietly, his voice devoid of its previous defensive edge. He shoved his hands into the pockets of his trousers, looking down at the polished oak floor between them. "I didn't earn the right. But that doesn't change the truth of what I said, Elena. I never stopped." "Save it for your board meetings, Mr. Sterling," Elena snapped, her tone dripping with synthetic ice as she snatched her leather folder off the table. "Our business here is concluded for today. If you have any further legal amendments, send them through my associate." She didn't wait for his reply. She turned on her heel, her three-inch heels clicking a sharp, furious rhythm against the glass floor as she strode toward the exit. She yanked the conference room door open and marched down the corridor, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Locking herself inside her private office, she dropped the folder onto her desk and walked straight to the floor-to-ceiling windows. The Manhattan skyline blurred before her eyes as the hot, rebellious tears she refused to shed in front of him finally spilled over. He's playing a game, she told herself fiercely, pressing her forehead against the cool glass. He's a billionaire CEO now. He has a multi-billion-dollar merger to secure, an elite heiress on his arm, and a corporate image to polish. You're just a stop along the way, Elena. Don't be a fool twice. Yet, deep down, a terrifying, quiet voice whispered a different truth: He looked at you the exact same way he did when you were twenty-two and sharing a single blanket in a freezing apartment. Meanwhile, three floors down in a rented corporate suite, Julian Sterling stood by his own window, staring out into the grey afternoon rain. He held an unlit cigar in his fingers, rolling it absentmindedly while his mind replayed every second of the confrontation in the conference room. He could still feel the phantom softness of her skin against his thumb. He could still see the fierce, unbroken pride in her dark eyes—the same pride that had made him fall hopelessly in love with her back in Boston. "Mr. Sterling?" Julian didn't turn around. "Speak, Marcus." Marcus Vance—no relation to Elena, despite the shared surname—was Julian’s chief financial advisor and legal strategist. He stepped forward cautiously, holding a tablet displaying the latest asset reallocation charts. "We've cleared the preliminary regulatory hurdles with Vance & Associates," Marcus reported, his voice measured. "Ms. Vance is running a tight ship. She hasn't yielded an inch on the Boston real estate liabilities. If we want this merger finalized by Friday without arbitration, we're going to have to concede on the commercial tax exemptions." Julian finally turned away from the window, a slow, grim smile touching the corner of his mouth. "Let her have them," Julian said quietly. Marcus blinked in surprise, lowering his tablet. "Sir? That concession will cost us close to four million dollars in initial overhead. Why would you give her that kind of leverage?" Julian walked over to his mahogany desk, placing the unlit cigar down with deliberate care. His thoughts drifted back to the fierce, beautiful woman upstairs who looked at him like he was public enemy number one. "Because," Julian murmured, his gaze darkening with a quiet intensity, "she earned it. And besides... I want her to win." By Thursday afternoon, the legal battle had reached its final, exhausting phase. The conference room was littered with empty coffee cups, crumpled legal pads, and thousands of pages of audited financial statements. Both legal teams were running on fumes, fueled entirely by caffeine and sheer adrenaline. Elena sat at the head of the table, her dark hair still impeccably styled, though dark circles shadowed her eyes beneath her professional makeup. For the past six hours, she had gone toe-to-toe with Julian’s team, scrutinizing every single clause of the master acquisition agreement. "This clause regarding intellectual property rights in the European sector is still too vague, Mr. Sterling," Elena pointed out, her voice crisp and authoritative as she slid a document across the table. "My firm will not sign off on a liability loophole that leaves my client exposed to foreign tax penalties." Julian leaned back in his leather chair, studying her across the table. He hadn't taken his eyes off her for the past hour. There was an unconcealed streak of professional admiration in his gaze, mixed with something far more personal and dangerous. "Your caution is commendable, Ms. Vance," Julian said smoothly, picking up the document and skimming it without looking away from her eyes. "However, my legal team drafted that clause specifically to preempt the upcoming EU digital market regulations next quarter. If we tighten it the way you suggest, your client actually loses thirty percent of their overseas distribution protection." Elena frowned, snatching the document back to review the cross-references. She flipped through the dense legal statutes, her mind racing at lightning speed. To her utter frustration, she realized he was right. She had missed that specific subsection in the updated European trade codes. She swallowed her pride, her jaw tightening slightly. "Very well. We will adopt your amendment for subsection B, provided you accept our terms on the employee severance escrow account." Julian held her gaze for a long, silent moment before giving a slow nod. "Accepted." A collective sigh of relief rippled through the exhausted associates sitting along the edges of the room. "Then I believe," Julian said, standing up and buttoning his suit jacket with deliberate slowness, "that concludes the final drafting phase. The master agreement is ready for signature tomorrow morning at ten." Elena stood up as well, extending her hand across the polished oak table. Her fingers were ice-cold, but her handshake was firm, professional, and entirely devoid of personal emotion. "Thank you for your cooperation, Mr. Sterling. We will have the final paperwork printed and bound by tomorrow." Julian looked down at her outstretched hand. For a split second, she thought he might refuse it, or worse, pull her across the table. But slowly, he reached out and took her hand in his. His palm was warm, calloused in all the familiar places, wrapping entirely around her smaller hand. The electric shock of his touch traveled straight up her arm. Their eyes locked—a silent, intense dialogue held in the middle of a crowded, breathing room where no one else seemed to exist. "Tomorrow, then, Elena," he murmured, his voice rich and low, lingering on her name just a fraction longer than professional etiquette allowed. "Tomorrow," she replied evenly, slipping her hand out of his grip as if she were pulling away from a flame.
