The black Maybach closed its door and drove off quickly, leaving Leonie standing alone in the same spot.
Coming to her senses, Leonie looked at the business card in her hand and felt a sense of reassurance.
With Alaric’s capabilities, she believed he would surely be able to save her brother.
She dialed the number on the card, her anxiety rising uncontrollably.
The moment the call connected, it was immediately hung up. Leonie listened to the beeping sound coming from her phone, and her mood instantly sank.
On the other end, Isla furrowed her brows. She didn’t usually answer unknown calls, especially not those on her private number.
Soon after hanging up, the phone rang again.
Isla’s previously relaxed expression turned serious again. She finally answered the call, but instead of speaking first, she waited for the other party to speak.
“Miss Wellington, hello.” A sweet voice came from the other end.
The voice was unfamiliar, yet Isla felt an oddly familiar sense of warmth.
Leonie, noticing that Isla didn’t hang up right away, felt her nervousness ease slightly. “I’m Leonie. I need your help with a case.”
“Miss Ford? If you’re looking to hire a lawyer, you should first contact the firm’s reception, not call my private number directly.”
Isla’s tone was not friendly. “By the way, I’m curious—how did someone get a hold of my private number?”
Leonie tried to keep her voice calm. “Mr. Carrington gave me your private card.”
There was a brief silence from Isla. “Mr. Carrington? Alaric?”
“Yes.”
Isla’s tone became more cautious. “Alright, wait a moment. I’ll send the address to your phone. You can come straight here.”
Indeed, Alaric’s name proved to be effective.
Leonie had already remarked on this fact more than once today.
Whenever Alaric was mentioned, the firm’s staff treated her with respect, taking her directly upstairs. Mentioning Alaric made Isla immediately cautious, and even the security guard at the firm’s entrance knew of him.
Everything went smoothly, and she took the elevator straight to the top floor.
Isla stood up when she saw the files. “Are you the one Mr. Carrington recommended?”
“I hope Miss Wellington can help me with this.”
“If it’s his recommendation, I’ll certainly do my best. The public records show that Orion listed Ezekiel’s misuse of his company position for embezzlement, bribery, and even selling company equipment privately. We now need to find evidence that your brother didn’t do these things or find evidence that Orion framed Ezekiel. If we find the latter, I can guarantee that, even with the powerful family background of Beaumont Group, with enough evidence, I can make them pay.”
Leonie nodded, thanked Isla, and left.
Right now, finding evidence was the most important thing.
Otherwise, no one would be able to help her.
As soon as she stepped out the door, Leonie’s phone rang.
Seeing the contact on the screen, her heart skipped a beat.
Alaric!
When she answered the call, a deep, magnetic voice came through. “Magnolia Restaurant, table A. Wait for me there.”
Magnolia Restaurant was one of the city’s top restaurants, and only members could enter. As soon as Leonie arrived at the restaurant, she was stopped at the door.
“My friend made a reservation here, his name is...”
“Leonie? Is that really you?”
Suddenly, a surprised voice came from behind her.
Leonie tried to calm herself, but when she saw the person, her heart tightened.
Xander Lancaster?
What was he doing here?
Xander had once pursued her, but his character was poor, and Leonie didn’t have a good impression of him—she even found him repulsive.
“How have you been recently?” Xander asked, his voice tinged with excitement.
“Pretty good,” Leonie answered politely, smiling.
“It’s been a long time, let’s have dinner together.”
Leonie frowned slightly. “Sorry, I already have plans. My boyfriend will be here soon.”
Xander’s expression darkened. “Are you still with Orion?”
“That’s none of your business.” Leonie didn’t want to continue the conversation, so she turned to leave.
A flash of anger crossed Xander’s eyes as he grabbed Leonie’s wrist. “What are you pretending for?”
Leonie’s wrist was squeezed painfully, and instinctively, she swung her hand to slap him. “Let go!”
Xander took a step back, his face contorted with rage. “b***h, how dare you hit me!”
As soon as the words left his mouth, he raised his fist and swung it at Leonie.
Leonie froze in shock, not expecting him to actually strike her.
At this distance, she feared she wouldn’t be able to avoid it.
She squeezed her eyes shut, bracing herself for the pain she imagined was coming.
“Sir, don’t you think it’s a bit ungentlemanly to bully a lady?” Alaric’s calm voice rang out, as he tightly grabbed Xander’s arm.
Xander was about to lash out, but when he saw who was stopping him, he froze in place.
Wasn’t this the top figure in the legal world, Alaric?
What was he doing here?
Leonie instinctively took a step back and hid behind Alaric.
Xander immediately released his grip, lowering his head and looking like a frightened quail, acting carefully and meekly.
Alaric pulled Leonie towards him, turned to leave, then paused and spoke again, “Sir, before you raise your hand, maybe you should first check whose side the other person is on. If you continue to be this rude, the consequences won’t just be as simple as today.”
Alaric’s words were clear—Leonie was now under his protection.
Xander understood, didn’t dare to say anything more, and left in a disheveled manner.
The evening breeze gently brushed against Leonie, causing her to instinctively shrink her neck.
Alaric’s voice came from above her, “Let’s go inside.”
As the supreme member of the restaurant, Alaric was immediately greeted by staff and guided to a private room.
Once inside the room, as Leonie was about to lay down her coat, her phone rang.
Upon answering, her mother’s anxious voice came through. “Leonie, this afternoon Orion called and said that if I could fix the trouble Ezekiel caused, he would let Ezekiel go!”
Upon hearing this, Leonie’s heart sank, a bad premonition immediately creeping in.
“I was confused for a moment and actually believed his lies. I gave him all our money, even the house. But he still won’t let Ezekiel go. Leonie, what should we do?”
Leonie was suddenly overwhelmed with panic.
Orion had actually done this!
The bastard! Her fingers tightened around the phone, almost turning white from the pressure.
After a long pause, she finally managed to speak. “Mom, don’t worry. I’ll think of a way.”
Alaric, who had been listening to everything, fixed his deep, unreadable gaze on Leonie. His eyes seemed to hold thoughts she couldn’t decipher.
“You can have your mother stay with me for now.”
Leonie froze at the words, then abruptly lifted her head. A tear slid down her cheek.
“What did you say?”
