The word hung in the air heavy with everything we couldn't say, and I looked away first because I couldn't handle the weight of it, couldn't handle what I saw in his eyes when he said it. My heart was pounding and my hands felt shaky and I hated that he could still do this to me, could still make me feel like I was falling apart with just one word. Miles offered to get me another drink and I said yes immediately, grateful for any excuse to have a moment where his attention wasn't on me, where I could try to compose myself.
