Buzz… buzz…
The phone rang, softly then grew louder.
I shifted under the blanket, my head heavy, my body still carrying the ghost of alcohol and heartbreak.
Buzz… buzz…
The phone rang again.
My hand searched blindly on the bedside table.
The phone vibrated again.
I exhaled sharply, finally forcing my eyes open.
“Ugh…” I muttered, turning on my side. “Who is calling this early…”
I groaned and stretched my hand blindly across the bed until my fingers touched it.
“Unknown number.”
I stared at it for a second.
Who even…
Buzz…
It rings again .
I had to pick the call, I didn't say anything because it was an unknown number .
“Hello”
A deep voice came through the voice, instantly my sleepiness vanished.
I grip the phone tightly.
The voice was deep and alluring, it was calm yet commanding.
“Who is this?” I asked slowly sitting up in bed.
There was a pause across the phone.
“It’s me” the deep voice said again.
My brows pulled together. “You? Who is you?”
There was another pause. this time it was shorter
“It’s me… your fiancé.” came the voice this time it was deeper.
My breathing seize, my eyes widened, confused on what to say again
“Fi.. what?...” I stammered sitting up fully now. “Excuse me?”
Before he could answer, there was a knock at the door.
I flinched and ask who is it.
“Miss Rosalie?” the maid’s voice came through the door. “Your father is calling you downstairs.”
I shut my eyes tightly.
“of all time” I muttered.
I brought the phone back.
“Hello? Are you…”
But the line was dead.
I stared at the phone like it had suddenly become dangerous.
“…Your fiancé?” I repeated slowly.
“What kind of madness is this?”
Well I have to get ready to go answer my dad.
I quickly had my bath and got dress tieing my hair back.
I had barely stepped into the living room when she felt the atmosphere, it was like a boiling water that you could feel the vapor.
father stood near the window, his face doesn't look so good.
mother sat on the couch beside Elise.
Everyone was there waiting for me.
My father.
My mother.
All eyes turned to me.
My step sieze
“What is going on?” I asked.
“Where did you go last night?” mother ask with anger in her voice.
I blinked “out.”
Elise laughed softly. “Out where?”
I looked at her. “to clear my head off.”
My father’s voice came, firm. “Rosalie.”
I exhaled slowly. “I went out. That’s all dad.”
Elise tilted her head. “That’s all?”
“Yes.” I said steering at her.
She stepped closer. “You left this house last night.”
“And you came back this morning.”
I folded my arms anoyely. “So?”
Elise smiled.
“Roselie a very expensive car dropped you off.”
My heart skipped but I kept my face straight.
“And?”
And?” she repeated, laughing lightly. “That’s all you have to say?”
“What do you want me to say?” I snapped.
My mother looked disappointed. “Rosalie… were you with a man?”
I stared at her.
“Seriously?”
Elise clapped softly. “Oh, so it’s true.”
I turned to her sharply. “Nothing is true. I went out to clear my head.”
“To a club?” she asked.
“Yes.”
“And you drank?”
“Yes, obviously I would drink.”
“And a man brought you home?”
“No apparently…” she added softly, “a very expensive car dropped you back home this morning.”
My heart dropped slightly. I didn't even check the Uber I called well how will I know when I was drunk.
“That's not what it's looking like.” I tried explaining.
“Oh please,” Elise cut in, voice turning sharp now. “Don’t lie.”
mother looked disappointed. “Rosalie… is it true?”
I looked between them, disbelief rising in her chest.
“I went out because I was stressed mother” I said firmly trying not to sound offended. “That’s it.”
Elise laughed again, but this time there was something colder behind it.
“was stressed?” she repeated. “Or heartbroken?”
I didn't answer I just steered at her, because it was true.
Elise stepped forward.
Her eyes narrowed.
“Is it because I’m marrying Julian that you ran away last night?”
My breath hitched.
That name again.
Like a wound being pressed.
“Elise..”
“Or,” Elise continued, ignoring me. “is it because you couldn’t stand seeing me happy with him?”
My fists slowly curled.
“That is not why I left.”
Elise tilted her head.
“But you did leave.”
Then she smiled.
A cruel one this time.
“And you came back early in the morning in a man’s car.”
My eyes widened in shock
“What are you talking about?”
Elise stepped closer and said in a soft voice Almost poisonous.
“Don’t act innocent, Rosalie.”
My chest tightened.
“I didn’t sleep with anyone,” my voice came out sharply.
Elise blinked.
Then she laughed.
“Of course you didn’t,” she said lightly. “You just came back with a random man who dropped you off at our gate at dawn.”
The memory flashed.
The car.
The gate.
The money.
My fingers gripping something i didn’t even notice.
My stomach dropped.
Elise saw it.
And smiled wider.
“Oh,” she whispered. “So it’s true.”
My voice lowered. “Nothing happened.”
Elise tilted her head.
“Then explain it.”
Silence.
I couldn’t.
Because I didn’t even know the full truth myself.
I froze. “Elise that was a Uber driver.”
“And here I thought she was just heartbroken,” she said softly ignoring my words “But maybe she just needed attention.”
My eyes snapped up.
“Elise.”
But she wasn’t done.
She turned back, eyes shining with something sharp.
“You know,” she said casually, “if you’re too emotionally unstable to be my bridesmaid…”
I stiffened.
Elise stepped closer.
“…you can just leave it.”
There was a heavy silence.
I stared at her.
For a moment, I didn’t speak.
I Didn’t blink.
I Didn’t breathe properly.
“So you don't want me to be your bridesmaids.”
I ask her with a careful tone
Elise smiled gently.
“I just want you to be comfortable.”
