The Capitoline Hill, Rome September 1985Giorgio and Tamara worked their way along the busy streets of Rome on this, a workday, but found some quiet time on the Capitoline Hill, one of the seven hills upon which ancient Rome was founded. “The Capitoline Hill refers to Capitolium, another word for temple,” Giorgio explained. “The Romans thought that such a temple was indestructible, and so it represented eternity.” “Hence, the Eternal City,” suggested Tamara. “Exactly.” “The architecture is spectacular here, and the sculptures!” “The plateau, just here,” he said pointing to the flat area atop the steps and sandwiched between the towering equestrian statues, “is called the Piazza del Campidoglio, and it was designed by Michelangelo. These are government buildings,” Giorgio explained.
