KESSARI
It had been such a long day. Kessari was beginning to think the night wouldn't end. She was so exhausted the thought of doing anything else aside throwing herself in bed seemed suicidal and impossible, despite that, she helped Magdha get in bed, took a shower and made herself a cup of Raspberry tea. As she sat on the kitchen counter, legs crossed sipping her cup of tea in silence, she mentally reflected on her day.
It had been one heck of a day and she was glad it had finally come to an end. She knew Lara wouldn't let what happened earlier during the night slide, but in that moment, she couldn't be bothered to care.
“Lara can go f**k herself “, she said under her breath, she would think of how to deal with her later. Right now, she just wanted to sip her cup of tea and enjoy the peace and quiet that the night had brought her way.
As she continued to sip her tea her mind took her back to the interesting run in she had earlier with God knows what , whatever it was, it was huge and fast and not human or animal, it was very clear to Kessari that whatever she had hit was nothing like she had ever seen and she had seen a lot.
Suddenly the curiosity from earlier gripped her again, so many questions ran through her mind. If it's neither human nor animal What was it? Could it be both? How could it be so fast? And this close to the town??
She got off the kitchen counter and placed her cup of tea down. Her mind wandered for a bit. What if whatever she saw was dangerous and attacked at night. She hoped for their sake and hers whatever that thing was, no matter how dangerous, it would have the common sense to stay far away from her and Magdha.
She had killed many before in war, she would not hesitate to take another life if it meant Magdha would be safe.
Exhaustion started to cloud her senses again, she needed to rest or at least try to. She emptied the cup of tea, washed it and started to head off to bed.
Suddenly she heard it. The dragging of feet along her driveway and she could almost hear sounds of breathing. There was something else she could hear, whatever or whoever it was that was on her driveway was either exhausted or very hurt.
Then it stopped, suddenly, there was no dragging of feet, no heavy breathing, nothing. Just silence. For a minute Kessari just stood there, listening, listening for something, a sound, movement, there was silence, no sounds, no dragging of feet. It was too sudden, human beings and things don't just disappear into thin air, she knew that whatever or whoever she heard was still out there, waiting, this was the calm before the storm and whatever was lurking in her driveway, she was ready for it.
It was quick and sudden, but she could hear movement in her backyard, just like she thought, whatever was moving around her house had not disappeared into thin air, it was still around, moving carefully and slowly which meant it had noticed Kessari's presence in the house.
This was her time to strike. Kessari slid open the cabinet in the kitchen counter and drew out her rifle, her breath steady as she moved stealthily but quickly to the door leading to her backyard.
She moved closer, quietly to the door and pulled it open, a cold wind brushed against her face. She heard it before she saw it, a deep growl, she steadied her hands on the rifle, waiting for a chance to fire. She walked slowly toward the sound, there was no movement.
As she stepped in the backyard the air became still, so many thoughts run through her head, with one underlying question ‘what looked like a human but sounded like an animal ‘.
Her thoughts came to a pause , she heard movement, quick, rushing in her backyard, aim steady she stepped closer. The movement stopped, the growl got louder and in between the flowers she saw golden eyes, glistening in the darkness, it was beautiful, almost mesmerising. She stopped in her tracks, a couple of steps away from the stranger that lurked in her backyard.
Rifle steady and eyes focused, she took one breath prepared for whatever would come out from behind the flowers.
