Afterward, she set the kettle to boil again and prepared the tea. When it was ready, she took the cake out of the tin and plated it up. Brennan moved to get a knife to cut it with, and soon they were sampling the cake with steaming hot tea. “Mmmm, I can’t remember the last time I had cake this good, Naiyah,” sighed Brennan as he finished off his second slice. Naiyah beamed with pride, it was only a cake, but she was so pleased he liked it. Brennan stoked the fire and banked it for the evening, and they sat together quietly on the couch. Naiyah leaned on his shoulder, and he wrapped his arm around her small frame. She watched the flames leaping in the grate and listened to the soft music from the tiny radio Brennan had. She felt her eyes drooping and was almost asleep when Brennan spoke.
