He busied himself in the small kitchen area dishing up the stew into bowls and pouring water into cups. The simple but nourishing meal was served, and Naiyah gratefully took the steaming bowl. It was soon gone, and she finally gathered the courage to speak.
“Thank you. Where did you find me?”
“In the woods, about a mile or so from here. You were pretty cold, and injured, so I carried you back here. This is my home, it’s just me here, and you can trust me. You don’t need to tell me anything about why you were out there but know that I will protect you with my life.”
That last statement came out before he could stop himself. He meant it, of course, he did, but he didn’t want to scare her with his intensity.
Naiyah was surprised at his words, no one had really cared about her since her father died, and she could barely remember. She closed her eyes and shook her head as if to ward off bad memories. Her eyelids were getting heavy after the warm meal and she slumped back on the pillows.
“I’ll let you sleep now, I’ll make sure everything is secure and the fire is banked for the night. If you need the bathroom, just shout for me and I’ll help you, it’s just through that door. It’s not much, but it flushes and there’s a shower with hot water.”
Naiyah was fascinated by Brennan. The deep timbre of his voice that seemed to vibrate through him and reach into her soul, the inky black hair that was just a little too long and tendrils of it reached down his forehead. He was tall and large, but he didn’t seem to use his height and bulk to intimidate her like other alphas did. His eyes seemed to look directly into her mind, the deep blue seemed to swirl like an angry sea as she looked into them. But the best of all was his scent. She’d heard of Alphas and Omegas finding their mate through scent alone, the Alpha tracking their Omega mate down using their heightened sense of smell. Each scent was personal to their inner wolf, and if you were lucky enough to detect your mate via scent, once your were bonded together, it was forever.
There was just one thing. Naiyah knew it couldn’t be possible for Brennan to be her mate, or for her to even find one. She was a defective omega, unable to go into heat, barren, infertile, a husk. She had been called all sorts of names back at the facility, and she shuddered at the thought of the place. Thank the gods she had managed to escape. She hoped Brennan meant what he said, and she could at least recover here until she was strong enough to move on, to find somewhere she could call home. She may not be able to have a family or be like a normal omega, but she could be of some use to a pack, she was certain. Maybe Brennan knew the pack Alpha if he belonged to one. When she felt able to fully trust him, she would speak to him about it. She slipped into sleep, the brandy helping ease her troubled mind.
The Facility
“Get up husky!” The voice shouted at her, and it was followed through with a kick to her side. She sat up quickly and gathered herself. She had overslept and realized she was in trouble.
“We provide you a home, we take you in even though you’re pretty much useless, and now you’re showing how lazy you are!” The voice was sneering and belonged to Altus, the Alpha who ran the facility. He had never found his mate. Instead, he preferred to use the omegas in the facility whenever he felt like it. He claimed it was to get them ready for the life they would face, but in reality, it was just to sate his own needs. He was careful not to impregnate any of them, and he kept them quiet with threats to any family they might have or told them they would never escape if they told anyone.
“Get to work, b***h, or no food today” Altus smacked her on the backside as she scrabbled to her feet. It was hard enough to bring tears to her eyes, but she held them back, not wanting to let him see how he affected her. She went about her chores, cleaning the offices and then the dining hall. Her stomach was groaning for food as she smelt the breakfast being prepared in the kitchen. She knew she wouldn’t get the same food as the other omegas; her status was the lowest of all. Once they found out she wasn’t going to go into heat or bear a child, her worth was less than nothing. No alpha was going to want a defective omega, even if she could act the part. She remembered trying to fake it once. She’d told the house mother she was in heat and was lined up that night with the others. Eventually, one of the visiting alphas chose her. The Alphas were the only way out of the facility, if one of them chose you, you could escape and just pray that their household was better than this. It had to be. They tested the omegas first, some of them just liked to try as many as they could, but this one seemed kind.
He had laid her out on the bed in one of the rooms and started to kiss her. She didn’t feel any kind of response, but she pretended to enjoy it. As the alpha moved his hands over her body, she tried to do the same to him. She was clumsy and awkward, not knowing what to do to him, or how to make him feel good. He stripped her naked and glared at her hungrily. His mouth latched onto one of her n*****s and his hand found her other n****e and pinched it. It was too much for her and she cried out in pain. His head snapped up in confusion.
“What’s the matter? You should be loving this, I’m going to give you relief, f**k you like crazy!”
“Yes, yes, it’s wonderful, it was a cry of ecstasy. C-carry on, I’m fine,” she hurried to reassure him. Inside she was hoping it was quick. If he chose her she could go with him, have some freedom, and if she couldn’t take it with him, she could escape much easier.
He went back to his task, and she could feel his thick erection pressing onto her thigh. She hoped it wouldn’t hurt too much and was bracing herself for it. His left hand moved downward to her slit, feeling for her c**t. Her p***y was dry, she just couldn’t produce the necessary slick that he was expecting. He stopped again, rubbing through her folds but finding nothing.
He sat up, his erection wilting. He looked at her accusingly.
“You’re not in heat, are you? Why are you trying to trick me?”
“I -I can’t, I don’t know,” she sobbed, drawing her knees close to her chest to protect herself.
“I just wanted to please you, I still can, I don’t need to come, I can make you feel good, let me try.”
“No. It’s not what I want, what I need. If you can’t provide it, no one is going to want you.”
He got dressed and left abruptly, leaving her crying alone. After that, he told the house mother what she’d done, and then she couldn’t try again. After a few months and several full moons with no heat apparent, they labeled her as a barren omega, the worst thing you could be in a wolf pack. Sometimes they were cast out to fend for themselves and often died. If they were lucky, they could have some menial role in pack life. In the facility, they could have just dumped her in the streets, but instead, Altus decided to keep her. He’d never really liked her, and now he seemed to delight in punishing her any way he could.
Naiyah constantly thought of ways to escape. After that night, the night that was seared in her mind, she had had enough.
She’d done something wrong, again. Altus always found fault in her work, no matter what he did. He had a sadistic side to him which he took out on the girls. He had enough money to keep everyone quiet at the facility. This time it was that she had forgotten to wash the towels in time for the omega lineup that night. He was furious. Naiyah ran to hide in the cleaning closet. He found her of course. He loosened his belt from his trousers and ordered her to bend over his desk. He tied her hands and feet to the legs of the desk. As he stalked around the desk, Naiyah could sense his anger, it was vibrating off him in waves. She closed her eyes and braced herself. Instead of the whipping she expected, he lifted her dress to expose her rear. They wore simple cotton shift dresses that fell just above the knee. Her eyes flew open, and she gasped. Surely, he wouldn’t, she had no slick, no way to enter her without ripping her apart.
“I’ve always wondered if I could make you go into heat for me, what an achievement that would be,” he said as he stroked her buttocks over her panties. Naiyah swallowed hard as she shifted her weight. Altus slowly lowered her panties down as far as they would go with her legs spread and tied to the table legs. He slid his thick fingers down between the cleft of her butt cheeks, pausing on her tight hole. Naiyah felt sick.
“Dry as a f*****g bone. You’re definitely defective, husky. You couldn’t get a rutting stag hard.”
He withdrew his hand thankfully, and she began to relax again. Until she heard the belt fly through the air and land on her naked ass. He’d beaten her before of course, but never like this, naked and exposed. He seemed to revel in it, beating her again and again, all she could hear apart from the blood rushing in her ears was the swishing of the belt and the thwack, thwack, thwack of the blows raining down on her ass. He alternated the rhythm of the blows, the strength, and where it landed. At one point she thought it was over, only to start again. He gave one almighty crack with the belt on her, and she finally cried out with a scream.
“Ah, there you are my little mouse. I knew you couldn’t hold it in forever. Does it feel good? Do you like it?” His hand stroked down her back and through her crack again. He moved lower and grunted in frustration. Naiyah couldn’t believe it; he thought the thrashing was going to turn her on? He was sick in the head if he thought that.
Abruptly, he untied her, and grabbed her by the hair.
“If you like the cleaning closet so much, why don’t you stay there,” he ground out.
He led her down the corridor, threw her in the closet and locked the door. As she lay there in the dark, bruised, bleeding and humiliated, she knew that was it. This was the turning point. If she didn’t leave soon, she was going to die here.
She’d already scoped out the best way to get out, she was left alone in the early morning and late nights to clean up, there were fewer eyes on her then. She could just about sneak the key to the back door from house mother where she liked to smoke her rancid black cigarettes. She didn’t know where she would end up but it had to be better than here. She’d heard about wolves who had crossed the border into Lavania, to escape the draconian facility life for unmated wolves without family to support them. Lavanian law wasn’t as strict as Randor was, and she had heard omegas could be single until they chose a mate without repercussions. She had no idea if she would make it or not, but she had no alternative.
The next morning, Altus let her out of the closet, only because he needed her to sort out the facility for him. He was too tight-fisted to pay for help, so she did it all. He watched her slow movements around the place with hooded eyes and a cold hardness. She tried not to let him see how he affected her, but he knew.
That night she lay on her makeshift bed waiting for the right moment. When all was quiet and she could hear the owls outside making their presence known, she crept into the house mother’s office. She quietly took the old iron key to the big back door at the other end of the facility. Walking quickly but stealthily, she made her way in the dark. Her senses were heightened, and she could hear her heart pounding. She could feel the welts on her cheeks smarting from the movement, but she pressed on. As she turned the key in the lock she froze. The cold night air hit her in the face like a shockwave. Could I really do this? She wondered. It was now or never, so she crossed the threshold. She had managed to steal some clothes from one of the other omegas, but nothing was that warm.
Suddenly she caught the scent of freedom and started running, as fast as she could. She didn’t look back, just ran, as far and fast as she could. She ran until her lungs burned and her legs felt like jelly. The sun was starting to rise, and she stopped, her chest heaving. As she raised her hands to her face, she realized her cheeks were wet with tears she had been holding back for years.
Naiyah traveled for the next few days. She had to travel across the country, catching rabbits for food and traveling close to the water so she could drink and bathe. She knew if she kept close to the river, she would reach the border eventually. The weather was getting colder as she traveled further north, and she struggled to keep warm. She wrapped herself up in leaves and fronds from the trees at night.
Finally, she caught sight of the border, and crossed over at night, far from the border control checks. Dawn brought a few flakes of snow with it, and with her teeth chattering and snow underfoot, the traveling became treacherous. She hadn’t eaten since the day before yesterday, and she tried to look for food. She had fashioned a sling to catch rabbits and other small animals to eat, and she knew how to make a fire, but she was wary of doing so in case she was detected. It was soon going to be time to find some civilization so she could try and find a pack that would welcome her. Then, she spotted her prey, a group of squirrels scurrying in the trees trying to hide their nuts. She stayed super still and aimed her sling.
With a thump, the stone from the sling hit its target, and the rabbit she had aimed at hit the ground, its family scattering at the sound. Naiyah grinned with satisfaction and started to jog over to her kill. Suddenly, the ground seemed to give way under her right foot, and she heard a snap as her ankle rolled. She screamed into the forest in pain and fell to the ground unconscious.
