10 Today, Friday, was one of those weekdays when Mary didn’t teach. After breakfast, when Reggie had left on his rounds of the estate, Mary announced that she was leaving the baby with Jinjiang, the amah, and she and Jasmine were to go into George Town. ‘I managed to get Reggie to cough up some lolly for art materials,’ she said with a grin. ‘Really? How marvellous.’ Jasmine clasped her hands together in delight. ‘It will make such a difference to the children.’ The few days she had spent in George Town with her mother had been mainly within the grounds of the E&O and at the Swimming Club at Tanjung Bungah, so Jasmine was looking forward to rediscovering the streets of George Town.
