Justin’s POV:
The car ride to the White House was silent. No one seemed to really even move a muscle, but as we got closer and paparazzi started to swarm the car, I noticed Emily getting more tense. I slid towards her and put my hand on top of hers. She gave me a shy smile and let out a shaky breath. Hunter and Alyson were too busy looking out the windows at everything to notice anything.
Emily takes a deep breath as the car comes to a stop just outside the stairs. She looks at the roof of the car and presses her lips together. Her skin that’s normally a beautiful olive shade is turning pale. Her arms shake and she lowers her shoulders.
“Hey, it’s okay.” Hunter says softly as he joins me next to her. “We are here for you.”
I narrow my eyes and nudge her with my shoulder. “I’ll fight off all the paparazzi and tell them to shove off if I need to.”
She puts on a fake looking smile and sits forward. “Better get this over with.”
She nods and someone from the secret service opens the door. We are immediately met with an overwhelming amount of flashing and people asking questions. Hunter and I put our hands out and started pushing our way through the crowd, protecting Emily with our hands on her back. Secret service members surround us along with our pack guards, so Hunter and I drop our hands from in front of Emily. He steps in front of Emily, so I start walking behind her. I look at the other car with the girls in it, and can see them soaking up all the attention.
We make our way to the front door and go inside, where we are met with a bunch of guys in black suits. Alfred and my dad talk with some of the guys in suits. They shake hands and walk over to us.
“So, the funeral is tomorrow at 2. We are doing a private service tonight and then everything publicly in the morning. The secret service will accompany Emily, Melissa, Vicky, and Luna Kate everywhere they go in order to protect them but they have agreed to let one of our men stay with each of them while we are here.” My dad says in a calm but authoritative voice.
Hunter clears his throat. “Right. And where is our room?”
My dad sighs. “Unfortunately, they will not be allowing the two of you to stay with Emily.”
My gut wrenched. “I’m sorry, what?”
“Since neither of you are technically her boyfriend, they will not allow it.” Alfred says before my dad can say anything.
“They do not want the wrong image for the late president and his daughter that was lost for many years. They are trying to keep Emily quiet since she was technically out of wedlock and he seemed to have abandoned her as a child.” My dad pierces his lips together.
“I’ll be fine.” Emily says, folding her hands in front of her.
“Bullshit you will be! I’m not just leaving you with no protection or someone to watch your back when you are grieving!” I spit out.
“Well, then I guess it is a good thing I came along.” Alyson says from behind me.
Alfred and my dad glare at her for a moment. “I don’t think you’re qualified to protect her.”
“That’s right. You don’t like me. Give me a second to recover from the tragedy that is your acceptance of me. Oh wait, I don’t care.” She snuggly wrinkles her nose at my dad.
I stifle a laugh and turn it into a couch. “Excuse me.” I say while clearing my throat.
“Anyways.” Alyson rolls her eyes and looks at Emily. “She doesn’t need protection, just someone to watch her six.”
Emily's shoulders seem to raise as she gains some color back in her face.
“I still don’t like it, but it’s better than nothing I guess.” Hunter looks from Alyson to Emily. “The moment you sense anything wrong, or just need a break from everything, give me a call.”
Vicky and Melissa eventually came inside and Kate was escorted to her own room where Alfred and Chris decided it best to keep an eye on her themselves. We all walk down the hallways, being led by the men in suits to some rooms for us. They are the size of Emily’s old room with her aunt Lynn. There aren’t very many rooms, but enough for us to all be in with one other person. Everyone goes to their respective rooms, and I can’t help but watch as Emily walks into her room with her shoulders slumped down.
“I don’t like this.” I say as the door closes behind us. “At least one of us should be with Emily.”
“I agree, but what are we going to do?” Hunter unbuttons his suit jacket and sits on the bed to untie his shoes.
I sit in a chair and lean forward with my elbows on my knees. I let out an exasperated sigh. “No, f**k this.” I push myself out of the chair and start towards the door.
“Justin, no.” Hunter pops off the bed and steps towards me. “We have to respect what is asked of us right now. We are across the hallway. If she needs us, we are there.”
“This is still bullshit.” I say as I slump back down onto the chair. “She’s about to bury her father. She shouldn’t be with some sarcastic vampire that she barely even knows. She should be with us.”
