Chapter 4

Emily’s POV: Our stuff is delivered to our room, and Alyson sets herself up on the couch that’s in the room without even asking me if I wanted the bed or couch. We hardly got everything set down before there was an aggressive knock on the door. As I go to open it, Alyson jumps in front of me and puts her finger on her lips. “Don’t just open the door for anyone.” She aggressively whispers. “I can open the door if I please.” I roll my eyes and shove past her. “Besides, I can just read the mind of the person on the other side of the door. It’s Wayne.” Alyson shakes her head as she crosses her arms. “I’m here to help protect you, you know.” I open the door, and sure enough, Wayne stands with a couple of guys in black suits. “That’s what he is here for.” I smile and step aside for them to enter the room. “Ma’am, we understand that you are President Wilson’s daughter that he was unaware of?” One of the men in black asks. “Uh, yes. I am his daughter. I was recently connected with him.” I stumble over my words and try to hide the heat rising to my face. “We were informed that a DNA test has been completed to confirm that. We just have precautionary procedures we need to follow with this sort of thing. Your personal guard, George, and myself will be here to help you with everything that will happen this weekend. The press are going to get some pictures of you, so please keep with us as we will keep the reporters at bay the best we can.” The man explains. “What am I, chopped liver?” Alyson stands next to me with her eyebrow raised. “I am the guard that will stay with her in the room, and stand outside the bathroom when she needs it.” The man looks at Wayne, who looks reluctant to nod but does so. “Very well. We will be posted outside the room if you need anything.” The man says. “Uh, what should I call you?” I ask as the men exit the room. “Felix, ma’am.” He nods. “Please be ready in the next 30 minutes for the private service for your father.” The door shuts and for a split second I think I will get some silence. Alyson jumps beside me and puckers out her lips. “Bossy, that one. Hey, would you mind…?” She taps a small tumbler that she took the lid off of. “I’ve been hungry all day and all these humans walking around are driving me insane just thinking about ripping into their veins.” I let out a sigh and pulled out a pocket knife from my luggage. With one swift motion, I drag the knife across my palm and let the blood pool in my hand. “Hand it here.” I reach my hand out to take the cup. She hands it over and I let my blood flow into the cup before I heal. “Thanks.” She takes the cup back and lifts it in the air. “I don’t usually drink a whole lot of blood, but figured that a blood bag would be a little much for the trip.” “Mm.” Is all I manage to say as I wipe all the excess blood off with a towel. “You know…” Alyson takes a gulp of my blood and licks her bottom lip. “Justin may need some, too.” “He doesn’t drink my blood.” I saw without making eye contact with her. She turns away and sets her cup down. “No? Never?” I raise my eyebrows and clear my throat. “No. He is usually just a blood bag person, but he has caught some deer or squirrel and drank that blood.” She puts a jacket on and flicks her hair out from underneath the back. “Ah, well. I can confirm that this is by far the fastest blood I have ever had in my thousand years of life.” I feel myself going pale as I try to muster out something, but can’t manage to say anything, so I just nod. “Don’t worry. I won’t feed on you unless you offer for me to. I have restraint.” She assures me. “Shall we?” I take a deep breath and open my eyes. “Sure. Might as well get this over with.” Alyson opens the door and Wayne puts his hand to his ear. “We are on the move.” Felix puts his wrist to his mouth. “The turtle is on the way.” “You must be ‘turtle’.” Alyson whispers in my ear. “That’ll be good to know for the future.” I nod and follow everyone to a room where there is a closed casket in the front. Justin and Hunter sit in the front row. They both stand and button their jackets as soon as they see me. I soon have one on each arm as we walk towards the casket. “You don’t have to go up there if you don’t want to.” Hunter says as he squeezes my arm. “We can just go sit.” Justin squeezes my other arm. “No, I would like to go up there. But I want to be alone.” I feel a lump form in my throat that I can’t swallow. “I would like to say goodbye to my father alone.” “Are you sure?” Justin asks with his eyebrows raised. I nod my head as a pinch of guilt hits my stomach. I so badly wanted them to stay, but I felt like I needed to do this without them. I will still be surrounded by the guards, so I am not one hundred percent alone, but I know that I don’t want them to hear what I have to say. Hunter lifts my hand to his mouth and gives it a soft kiss. “If you’re sure, we will be just right over there.” He points to where they were sitting before I walked in. “Thank you.” I manage to say before they let go and walk to their seats. I walked over and set my hand on the top of the oak wood coffin that held my father’s mangled body. I know that the world thinks he died in a horrific bear attack, but the truth sits in my heart, and I can’t stop thinking that it is in fact my fault he is dead. My powers, what I am, all of the supernatural parts of me are what got him killed. I have to live with that every day of the rest of my life. I feel a warm tear fall from the corner of my eye and I don’t even care to wipe it away as it falls from my cheek onto the coffin. I take a deep breath. “I promise, I won’t let them get away with any of it. Even if I die trying.” I stifle a cry. “You would both still be here if I didn’t have these powers.” I gently brush my hand along the top and pick a white rose from the bouquet near the head of the coffin. “I’ll see you again, soon.” I turn and walk towards my boys. They both stand and button their jackets back up. Justin steps out of the way and helps me sit down while Hunter hands me a box of tissues. Melissa and Victoria walk up to do their goodbyes. Melissa starts sobbing, and Vicky just dabs at her eyes with a cloth, as if she is trying not to ruin her makeup. Kate walks in with Al and Chris on either side of her. She is dressed in all black with a black veil over her eyes. I feel Hunter’s muscles tense up as she gets closer. Kate smugly looks over at us. I can’t believe I have to pretend I ever loved this bastard. But, anything for pity in the eyes of the public I guess. Kate takes a deep breath and licks her lips. She walks over to her daughters and puts on a good show. Crying and holding the girls as if she was really grieving the loss of my father. The service was beautiful. A preacher came in and prayed over my father, and gave us his condolences. Then came all the secret service members that felt like they were just forced to say the exact same thing to us. By the time it was all over, I just wanted to go to bed. My head hurts as I absentmindedly make my way back to the room. Justin and Hunter make sure that any of the guards don’t get too close to me. Neither of them seem to be letting me take a step on my own as they both have their hand on my back. We walk up to my door and Felix holds his hand out and says something into his wrist. I don’t have the energy to try and make out what he says, but Wayne turns and looks around us while Felix and the George guy enter my room with their guns out. “Clear!” I hear from within and Wayne urges me into the room. Justin reaches his hand out to mind and squeezes it. “Are you sure you’re okay?” He asks without letting go of my hand. I nod. “I’m fine. I just need to get through these next few days.” He looks me up and down before releasing my hand. “I don’t believe you, but okay.” Hunter leans in and kisses my forehead. “You can call us and we will just talk however long you would like.” I nod my head and can feel some more color returning to my face. “I will.” I say before lifting my dress a little and walking into my room. Wayne shuts the door and turns to face everyone. “Emily, we will all be just outside the door.” Felix joins Wayne near the door and holsters his weapon. “Dinner will be brought shortly. Anything sound good? I can make requests.” I walk over to the bed and take my shoes off. “Whatever they cook is fine with me.” Felix nods and the three men exit the room. Alyson folds her arms and leisurely walks over beside me. She leans against the bedpost. “You know, you could have anything in the world for dinner tonight. They would go hunt a dang deer if you said the word.” I raise my eyebrows and scratch the back of my head. “I’m not one for asking. I’ll eat a poptart if that’s what they bring me. I really don’t care.” She rolls her eyes at me and flops on the bed. “You know, in another life we probably could have been best friends.” A half smile forms on my face as I exhale through my nose. “Was that a smile I just saw?” She laughs and pokes me in the arm. I chuckle a little and lean forwards to look at the ground. We get out of our service clothes and into more comfortable clothes before just sitting on the couch and talking for a bit about life. “I think you meant what you said earlier, about us being best friends in another life. But, I don’t see why we can’t be friends in this one?” She pulls her knee up to her chest and wraps her arms around her leg. “Well, my mother trying to have you for her collection and making it nearly impossible to keep you out of harm's way, makes our friendship kind of a complicated one.” “Doesn’t mean we can’t try?” I stick my neck out a little and give her a half smile. She just rolls her eyes. There is a knock at the door and she vamps over to it. “Dinner is here.” Wayne says on the other side of the door. Alyson slowly opens the door and the smell of cheesy garlic hits my nose. My stomach began to growl so loud that even Felix shot me a look. Wayne walks pushing a cart. “I had the kitchen make you your dads favorite meal when he was feeling down. Lobster chowder with cheddar biscuits and white sparkling grape juice.” He looks at me with a gleam in his eyes. “Well, he used to drink wine, but figured you could just use the grape juice.” I give him a thankful smile and nod as he pulls the cart up to me. “Thank you, it smells absolutely amazing.” “Well, go ahead and try it.” Felix says with a serious face. I do so and am filled with warmth. “This is by far the best thing I have ever had! Please, give my compliments to whoever made this.” Felix nods. “Will do, ma’am.” Everyone exits once again and Alyson comes over to grab her bowl. We finish rather quickly and before long, I find myself fighting off sleep. Alyson takes her stop on the couch and leaves me to the bed. I face time my boys and talk to them until I fall asleep.
