Hunter’s POV:
“I don’t like it.” Justin growls next to me. “She should have taken one of us with her. Or Alyson at the least. I just know something is going to happen.”
I don’t disagree with him, but I also understand where Emily is coming from. A year ago, she had no knowledge of the supernatural world. Now she has lost her mother and her father due to her having powers that no one else has and she is destined to be this all powerful supernatural that has the power to defeat any and all things that come at her. So, I get the need to step away and be with a human. But also, humans can’t protect her the way we can.
I don’t say anything, just nod my head and shove my hands into my pants pockets.
“I mean. What if she gets attacked by a bear out there and has to use her powers! No human would understand that.“ Justin starts. “Or she gets stabbed by someone and heals in front of that Felix guy. Who is going to explain that to him?”
I tilt my head to the side and pop my neck. “We have Alyson who can compel away anything questionable from an accidental supernatural encounter.” My knuckles pop loudly as I push down each finger with my thumb.
“You’re okay with this?” His face turns red and has more anger than confusion as he looks at me.
“You think I want her to be out there without us?” I snap as I stand up and face him. His eyes widen a bit as he takes a step back in submission to me. “No, but it’s what she wants right now. I was there for her when she lost her mother. She dealt with so much then, and now she wants to be out there to breathe a minute without the world that killed her parents following her.” I step back and rub my temples with one hand. “It’s killing me that she is out there right now with only a human protecting her.”
Out of nowhere, my head starts to feel as if it’s going to explode and I drop to my knees. Justin falls over backwards with his hands over his ears. I look around and all of the werewolf guards are starting to drop and Alyson stumbles into a wall with blood dripping from her nose.
I force myself to my feet and try to walk to the door that leads to Emily. I see someone standing at the door, muttering something under their breath.
My wolf, Cade jumps forward and my vision turns red.
Damnit! A witch! They must’ve gotten Emily.
The pain surges through my head , but I push through it as I walk over to the witch and grab her head before smashing it into the wall just hard enough to knock her out so she will stop the chanting. Around the room people look at me in horror, to which Alyson nods her head to me and starts looking people in the eyes, compelling the events away. Guards are starting to regain their balance, and Justin looks at me with bloodshot eyes that glow golden yellow. I turn outside and unbutton my suit jacket as Justin meets me outside.
“Told ya something would happen.” He says in a matter of fact tone.
“Can it.” I say as I scan the grounds outside and take my jacket off. “Follow me.” I growl.
Justin takes his jacket off as well and begins unbuttoning his sleeves to roll them up. We walk with purpose as we sniff the air around us, trying to catch a scent.
Blood. I hear Cade say.
“This way.” I say as I open my eyes but Justin is already there, looking at the ground.
He takes a knee and dips his finger in the blood before putting it in his mouth. “Something happened right here. It’s not Emily’s blood. It’s human. Probably Felix’s blood.”
As the words left his mouth, I caught a scent so sweet it had to be Emily’s. It also had a chemosignal that made me feel strong almost as if Emily was about to fight back. I try to follow the scent, but it slowly dissipates into the night air as we walk closer to the gates.
Guards from both the pack and secret service come rushing towards us, Alyson not with them. Wayne is the first to get close enough to us to talk.
“What happened?” His eyes scan the surrounding areas as if he is ready for someone to be lurking in the shadows.
“I don’t think the witch was meant to keep us inside for long. I think she was meant to just keep us all inside and out of the way so someone could take Emily.” I say under my breath so only Wayne and Justin can hear me. “Can anyone get in contact with Felix?” I yell out as the rest of the guards catch up.
Felix’s right hand man George talks over his ear piece, trying to locate Felix but he shakes his head at us. He turns around and starts barking orders at his men while Wayne looks to me.
“We need to figure out who sent out the attack.” I say as I start to pace and have my hands on my waist. “Then we can know where to even start looking.”
“Alright, I’ll get on it.” Wayne turns and starts rounding up our men.
George walks over and whispers something in Wayne’s ear. Wayne nods his head and starts towards us with a concerned look on his face.
Wayne took a deep breath. “One of the guards that was posted outside the gate appears to have been drained of blood and as has the guards that were watching the surveillance cameras.”
I let out a few curse words under my breath. “Well, at least we know a vampire was involved.”
“That’s all that we know.” Justin snaps. “We need to get a search party going now. For all we know, Svetlana or Felki has her and god only knows what they’ll do to her.”
Something shifts in the bushes just behind us. Something familiar about whatever it is hits me. The silhouette from the shadows slowly emerges and my heart lifts before the scent hits my nose.
“Emily?” I say with my eyebrow furrowed and my body slightly retracting as I look her up and down.
Justin steps forward but stops in his tracks. “No, her scent is off. That’s not Emily?”
A shake arm reaches out and pushes a branch out of her way. “Hello? Can someone please help me?”
