Chapter 39 - There's... So Much Blood

2069 Words
Dante was in a frenzy as he began barking out commands while carrying his unconscious woman out of the guest room and down the hallway to seek medical attention. She was covered in blood from head to toe and he had no idea of the extent of her injuries right now, or whether or not she might survive. He could feel his heart thumping loudly as all other sounds around him began to slowly fade away into nothing but a gentle hum. His beautiful Alexa… how could he have let something like this happen to her? She was supposed to be well protected… she was meant to be safe with him here! A voice shouting out at him suddenly pulled him out of his terrified trance and he turned, while still holding Alexa in his arms to meet Nicola’s eyes. “This way, Capo. Downstairs to the medical room. I have Doctor Gavino on route now. Said he’ll be here in around five minutes.” he explained, gesturing with a wave of his arms in the opposite direction. Nodding his head and clearly in shock himself, Dante followed along after his loyal second-in-command as he carried Alexa downstairs and into the large, sterile room which had been set up for various procedures. Luckily during Matteo’s wise remodelling over the past couple of years, and with all the continuous injuries that the Romano men and their henchmen sustained, this specially designed medical room had been installed in one of the larger rooms located on the ground floor. This was where all surgeries, procedures and medical examinations could take place, without having to raise flags by going into the local Hospital. The room had almost everything you could need in a medical sense; it even included an ultrasound machine and a state-of-the-art x-ray machine! Nicola led his Don through the middle of the sterile room to where a singular metal bed sat. Although the bed had been lined with an easy to clean vinal mattress, it was still quite uncomfortable to say the least. Not that it was there for someone’s comfort. “Put her down here.” Luca commanded as he began pulling on a pair of latex gloves, one by one. “I’ll need some room to do my examination.” Luca, being the only one of them currently in the castle who had extensive medical training, would need to keep Alexa alive until the doctor arrived. And of course, he knew just how important Alexa was to their capo. Still in some form of shock, the Don quickly obeyed, carefully laying her down onto the clean vinal mattress and stepping back. Nicola came to stand beside Dante and the two of them were forced to watch as Luca began working his magic to assess Alexa for any life-threatening wounds or injuries. “There’s… so much blood…” Dante whispered, not realising he had made his announcement aloud to the others. Nicola merely grabbed his shoulder and gave it a comforting squeeze as he spoke. “She’s a fighter… she’ll pull through.” He chose to make the promise to his boss and good friend, even though deep down, he didn’t quite know if he could keep it. Nicola had no idea of the injuries that poor Alexa had sustained. Of whether she would live or die here tonight. And so soon after her last attack… it simply wasn’t fair! After moments of fear-filled silence while Luca worked to clean and dress her wounds, the medically trained henchman came to stand and made his way over to give his report to them. His hands were covered in blood, and he casually wiped them against a towel as he spoke with a serious expression on his usually grinning face. Luca had always been the one to make others laugh and smile… but right now, it wasn’t the case. “She’ll pull through. She’s got a nasty laceration to her left forearm that’ll need stitches and some serious bruising around her neck. He obviously tried choking her during the attack... did a pretty good job at it too. She’s lucky he didn’t break her neck with the amount of force he used on her!” “f**k!” the Reaper cursed angrily. Dante turned away, gritting his teeth together at such awful news. But he held strong as Luca continued to report his findings aloud. “Due to the extensive injuries around her neck, she may find it difficult to talk for a while, but we’ll see how bad the damage is when she’s awake. Also, the struggle she put up against her attacker reopened the stitches in her abdomen, so Doctor Gavino will have to close that up again when he arrives...” Luca then turned around to face Alexa and added something more. “Honestly, she’s lucky to be alive! Alexa’s… she’s one hell of a fighter, that’s for sure!” Dante, although glad to hear that she would survive, was gutted inside. Once again, he had failed the woman he loved. And what was worse, the attack on her had been right under their very noses... in his own Castello! Suddenly he thought of something else and found himself asking his next question before he had a moment to think it through. “Wait, Luca… the baby? Is it…” he trailed off, expecting to be told the worst from his loyal henchman and friend after such a brutal attack. But Luca surprised the Don by smiling in response. “From what I can see, the baby should be fine.” he announced happily. “But we’ll do an ultrasound just to be certain. I’m sure that Doctor Gavino will be able to confirm this when he arrives.” Dante nodded his head, letting out a built-up sigh of relief before swallowing away any remaining nerves. Luca nudged Dante on the elbow, making sure not to use his blood-soaked hand to touch his Don before he turned with a smile and headed back over to continue working on Alexa. Nicola turned to Dante, placing one of his larger hands onto his Capo’s shoulder as he spoke. “See? She’ll pull through.” he reminded softly. But Dante surprised his second-in-command when he lifted his heated gaze and spoke in full on Reaper mode, his voice deep and dark. “Find that f*****g hitman, Nicola. I want him here, alive and before tomorrow night.” The command was dark, unforgiving, and Nicola knew that Dante wasn’t messing around at all right now. Luckily for him, Nicola had already seen to this urgent matter, and had several men scoping the hitman out even as they spoke. “I’ll have him ready for you, capo.” Nicola promised with a nod. “Just be there for her now.” he gestured with a nod in Alexa’s direction. As Dante nodded his head, Nicola gave his boss one last smile before turning and heading off to over see the capture of Alexa’s hitman, as commanded. If he was going to locate, capture and transport the bastard in a matter of ten hours, he would have to work fast! - After arriving back at the Castello and seeing the scene of craziness before him, Matteo frowned with confusion as he watched people scurrying about in a rather urgent manner. Something was going on… and he wanted to know what it was. Deciding to go and find his bigger brother, Matteo headed for the Don’s office but stopped halfway when he spotted several men standing guard at a doorway. Making his way over, Matteo was stopped at the door by one of the unfamiliar guards who held out his hand with a frown of warning. “Sorry, no one can enter.” he barked. “Don’s orders.” Countering his frown, Matteo narrowed his emerald eyes and placed both hands onto his hips in disobedience as he spoke with a smooth undertone of warning. “What the f**k’s going on here?” he demanded impatiently. “And where the hell are my brothers?” The guards, clearly having no idea of who Matteo actually was, looked to one another with matching looks of confusion. “Sorry, I’m afraid you’ll have to leave immediately.” the taller of the guards insisted sternly. “Like he said, no one can enter without the Don’s say so.” Shaking his head in frustration, Matteo cursed under his breath at the foolish morons standing before him. They obviously had no idea of who he was, and he wasn’t in the mood to have an argument with them. Just as he was about to snap, unleashing how he really felt at these two idiots, a familiar voice spoke up from behind Matteo, causing him to turn around. “Is that any way to speak to the Reaper’s brother?” Roberto queried; his left brow lifted in challenge as he eyed the two guards in challenge. Upon hearing this, both guards appeared to become quite worried, as if they had done something seriously wrong. Their shoulders slumped over, and their heads lowered as they watched Roberto come to stand beside his baby brother, placing a hand onto his shoulder in support. “Sorry, Mr. Romano. We had no idea who you were.” one of them admitted sheepishly. “Yeah, our orders were to keep everyone out until we heard otherwise.” the other added. Matteo’s tense demeanour suddenly loosened up a little and he rolled his eyes, instead turning to face Roberto in question. “Bro, what the hell’s going on? I leave for a couple of hours and-” “-Alexa was attacked… again.” Roberto cut in, surprising Matteo and causing him to become momentarily mute. “What? Are you serious?” Roberto nodded, closing his eyes and lowering his head solemnly. “Is she alright?” Matteo found himself questioning. “She’s hurt, badly. But she’ll live.” Roberto replied. “Looks like another attempt was made on her life. Someone really wants her taken out of the picture, that’s for sure.” “f**k…” Matteo cursed softly to himself, lifting his hand to rub the back of his neck. “Yeah, Dante’s in a real mood about it too. Security’s been beefed up like crazy and there’s guards posted all around the castle. No one gets in or out without his own direct approval.” “Then how did I get let in?” Matteo questioned in challenge. Roberto shrugged as he replied. “Dante must have given his approval. He gets a message whenever someone seeks entry in through the main gates now. If they don’t get his reply to allow entry, the car gets turned back around.” Roberto grabbed his brother’s arm and began leading him away from the guarded door as they continued with their conversation. “I’m not kidding about the security here Matteo, Dante’s gone all out after this most recent attack. He’s also got men out searching for that fucker who stabbed her. They told me he’s a hitman who was hired by the De Luca’s; can you believe the nerve of those backstabbing bastards?” Matteo remained silent for a moment, as if deep in thought over what he now knew. He felt the guilt washing up over him at what their own father had planned for both Roberto and Dante in his own favour. Perhaps their father looked at his two eldest sons as mere obstacles to overcome, but to Matteo, they were his brothers and closest confidants. Had been his entire life, even with all of the s**t he had put Dante through in the past. The things that both Dante and Roberto had done for him, keeping him out of trouble and looking out for him, the sacrifices they had both made… how could he possibly think to betray them now? Originally after hearing what his father had planned, the youngest brother wanted to go straight to Dante with the news, to show his bigger brother that he could in fact be trusted. But after learning of the attack and that Dante was currently on edge, Matteo decided instead to do the next best thing. To tell Roberto everything he knew. “Roberto…” Matteo cleared his throat, seeming suddenly hesitant. “There’s something important that I need to tell you…”
