Chapter 32 - Healing Wounds

1683 Words
By the time the limo had arrived at Castello Romano, Roberto had already contacted their family’s doctor here in Italy and had him come around for her imminent arrival. When he did arrive, Matteo had escorted Doctor Gavino inside, and now the fifty-eight-year-old Italian father of five was ready and waiting for Alexa in one of the more sterile rooms located within the castle. Willow, after hearing about the attack, had to be held back by Roberto as she was forced to watch on from her position by the entrance, unable to do anything to assist. Concern was clearly evident in her expression as Nicola emerged from the driver’s seat and ran around to open the door to the long black car. “Oh my god, Lex!” she called out frantically, pulling from Roberto’s strong hold on her. “What happened to her?” She watched in horror and confusion as her now unconscious best friend, who appeared to be covered in blood, was lifted out of the limo and carried up the stairs, past Willow and Roberto and into the large family estate. “What the f**k happened to her?” Willow shouted after them as tears escaped her reddened eyes. Roberto, seeing how much this was affecting her, wrapped both arms around Willow and pulled her in against his chest, hugging her and giving her the reassurance she so desperately needed right now. “She’s in good hands, Willow.” he spoke with his chin resting on the top of her head. “Let them help her.” Frowning, she shook her head and began to sob painfully into his chest as Roberto continued to try and console her while the others worked to help Alexa. - As Nicola placed Alexa down onto the large table, the Doctor immediately got to work, assessing her vitals and setting up the tools and equipment he needed while the others watched on in concern. “Avrò bisogno di pulire e sigillare la ferita. Potrebbe anche richiedere una trasfusione di sangue.” (I will need to clean and seal the wound. She may also require a blood transfusion.) Doctor Gavino explained to them as he rounded the table. “Hai fatto bene a impedirle di sanguinare.” (You did well to keep her from bleeding.) Dante watched as Gavino used a pair of sterile scissors and began cutting away at the black cocktail dress she was wearing to reveal her midsection and the wound in its entirety. “Lei vivrà, vero?” (She will live, right?) Dante questioned while staring down at her unusually pale face. Doctor Gavino seemed to stop for a moment, sighing softly before he replied. “Farò tutto quello che posso, capo.” (I’ll do everything I can, boss.) he promised, meeting Dante’s reddened, tear-filled eyes. “Ma ho bisogno che tu te ne vada ora e mi lasci lavorare. Per favore...” (But I need you to go now and let me work. Please…) Dante immediately stiffened at this and narrowed his eyes. “Non vado da nessuna parte.” (I’m not going anywhere.) he insisted sternly. Hearing this, both Nicola and Luca looked to one another, knowing full well what would happen if the Reaper lost his s**t right here and now. Matteo too knew that something would need to be done here. If Dante wouldn’t leave of his own free will, they may very well have to make him. Nicola decided to try and convince him first. “Capo, il dottore ha bisogno di spazio per lavorare. Per salvarle la vita.” (Boss, the doctor needs room to work. To save her life.) he reminded as calmly as he could manage. But Dante remained in place by Alexa’s side, unmoving and unwilling to listen to reason. Nicola turned and glanced at Matteo, noticing that the younger Romano brother was approaching one of the tables lined with equipment. Nicola watched as Matteo slowly picked up what looked like a syringe and a small vial beside it. Matteo was careful not to draw attention to himself as he carefully filled the syringe with the powerful sedative and then placed the empty vial back down again. Nicola knew exactly what Matteo had planned and although he didn’t like the idea, the second in command knew they had little other choice right now. Dante wasn’t listening to reason and the doctor needed room to work. It was either this, or Alexa risked losing her life. Meeting Matteo’s gaze for a split second, Nicola gave him the nod of approval to proceed and decided that he would be the one to distract Dante so that Matteo could get the jump on him. Coming to stand beside his Don, Nicola placed a hand onto Dante’s shoulder as he spoke in a calming and reassuring manner. “Vuoi salvarle la vita. Anch’io.” (You want to save her life. Me too…) he began speaking, allowing Matteo to slowly move in from behind where Dante was standing beside Alexa. “Essere qui, metterti in mezzo non la aiuterà, Dante.” (Being here, getting in the way won’t help her, Dante.) “Lo resto Nicola. Questo è tutto ciò che c’è da fare.“ (I’m staying, Nicola. That’s all there is to it...) Dante insisted, giving them the chance they needed. Closing his eyes and sighing, Nicola opened them again before he spoke one last thing. “Allor mi dispiace...” (Then I’m sorry…) Matteo who was now directly behind Dante by now, jabbed the needle into the side of Dante’s neck and quickly injected the sedative, but not before Dante turned and grabbed the now empty needle from his brother’s hand, pushing Matteo backwards. Pulling it out of his neck, Dante looked at the empty syringe and then between Matteo and Nicola in disbelief as the entire world around him began to sway and blur. “Cazzo…” (f**k…) He whispered the word before he suddenly collapsed, luckily caught by the underarms just in time by Nicola before he hit the ground below. “What the hell are you doing?” Luca asked frantically, coming to stand in front of Nicola with a frown. “What needed to be done.” Nicola replied in his usually tone of authority, glancing across at the doctor who smiled and nodded his head in thanks. With that Nicola held Dante up by his shoulders, while Matteo helped by grabbing his big brother’s legs as the pair proceeded to carry him out of that room and upstairs, to sleep off the sedatives they had given him. Everyone vacated the room, allowing the doctor to do what he did best. Save Alexa’s life. - Hours ticked by and still there had been no word from the doctor. After carting Dante upstairs to his room to sleep off the sedatives they had given him, to help calm him down in such a heightened state, both Nicola and Matteo had returned to wait with the others for any news on Alexa. Roberto in the meantime had to escort a frantic Willow up to her room to try and sleep while they waited. The red head was finding it far too difficult to sit around waiting like the others. In a way, she blamed herself for not doing something to help prevent this. Of course, none of this was her fault by any means. It was around two in the morning when the door finally creaked open, alerting everyone who had been waiting in the next room to hear news of Alexa’s progress. Shaking the sleep from his head, Luca looked up to see Nicola crossing the room to stand before the doctor, who’s hands were soaked, stained red with blood. Luca watched as Doctor Gavino stopped in front of Nicola, removing his glasses and speaking to him softly in Italian. From where he was seated, Luca couldn’t quite hear what was being said, but he could read their facial expressions. Nicola’s seemed strange. The second-in-command suddenly frowned, shaking his head as he spoke. Now Luca was worried and he immediately stood up, crossing the room to go and join them in their conversation. It wasn't bad news, was it? As he approached, he made out some of what was being said. “No, non ne avevo idea.” (No, I had no idea.) Nicola admitted. The doctor nodded his head, as if he had expected such a response from him. “È probabile. Lei è solo nelle prime fasi.” (It is probable. She is only in the early stages.) he announced, cleaning his glasses on his shirt. “Oltre a quello, sembra che la signorina Myers si stia riprendendo bene. Visto quello che ha passato la poveretta.” (Other than that, it looks like Miss Myers is recovering well. Given what the poor woman has been through.) Both Nicola and Luca looked pleased to hear it. “Ho sigillato la ferita, ma dovrò fare visite regolari per verificarne la guarigione.” (I have sealed the wound, but I will have to make regular visits to see if it has healed.) Doctor Gavino added. “Grazie dottore.” (Thank you, doctor.) Nicola smiled, patting the older man on the back before he too smiled and nodded his head. With that, both Luca and Nicola watched as the middle-aged man returned to the room to do his final checks and observations, before Alexa could be moved upstairs to a comfortable bed. Luca noticed that Nicola was finding it difficult to meet him eye to eye all of a sudden and he narrowed his eyes in suspicion at his companion. “Everything alright, Nic?” Nicola took in a deep breath before he finally turned to look at Luca. “It’s nothing.” he lied, forcing a smile. In truth, Nicola felt a great sense of unease right then and there. Thanks to the doctor, he had just been informed something about Alexa that he wasn’t quite sure he should even know about. Apparently, according to the doctor, Alexa was around five weeks pregnant…
