Chapter 13 - A Really BIG DEAL

2267 Words
Alexa couldn’t sleep following her confrontation with Dante earlier on in his office, though she gave it a shot. She was furious with him. Uncontrollable anger flooded throughout her veins, blurring her normally logical thinking and causing her entire body to heat up uncomfortably. She tossed and turned for around twenty minutes before finally deciding to go for a walk and visit Willow. Dressing herself in a long robe, Alexa began to make her way down the hallway towards Willow’s guest bedroom. Maybe a visit to her BFF could help to better clear her mind, even if only for a little while. The truth was, she needed someone to b***h to about Dante’s most recent acts of selfishness. - Of course, Willow was wide awake when Alexa arrived and she welcomed her friend in immediately without questioning her too much. After listening to Alexa rant and complain about Dante and how he had acted earlier on in the office, Willow sat with a frown on her face. This was by far the quietest Willow had ever been since the two of them first met all those years ago! “So… let me get this straight…” Willow began, scratching the long red hair at the top of her scalp. “You’re angry with Dante because he wants to get revenge against the bastard who assaulted you… because he wants to kill the guy?” Alexa let out a huff, shaking her head as she heard her friend explaining it so black and white. “No… I mean, yes! And no… AHH!” Throwing her hands up into the air, Alexa scrunched her face up and buried it into both her open hands. “Of course, it sounds bad when you put it like that!” Alexa whinged into her palms. Willow pursed her lips as he moved in closer towards her friend and placed her hand onto Alexa’s shoulder while she spoke. Willow was always one to get right to the point during their discussions. It was one of the things that Alexa liked most about her; no f*****g around. “You do still remember what this guy did to you, right?” Alexa lifted her head up, meeting Willow’s eyes with a frown. “Of course, I remember, Will... you don’t forget something like that.” Alexa announced solemnly. “And you’re wondering why the man who loves you wants to rip this guy’s head clean off? Willow questioned, lifting both brows. Closing her eyes, Alexa allowed a long sigh free before reopening them again. “That part I understand.” she admitted. “I just don’t see why he has to kill someone! I mean, is it really necessary to go that far? What will it even prove anyway?” Willow chuckled for a second. “Honey, you’re dating a Mafia Boss. He’s probably killed hundreds of people in the pa-” Alexa’s chocolate brown eyes widened, and Willow immediately realised her mistake.  Shutting her mouth and looking away for a second, the red head tried to come up with something else that they could discuss.  A change of topic, so to speak. Unfortunately, she couldn’t think of anything on the spot and Alexa suddenly felt her stomach churning with all the added anxiety. Her hand moved to instinctively cover it as she frowned and lowered her head. “You ok?” Willow asked her. “I don’t feel so good.” she admitted, pulling herself up to stand as Willow too did the same. “Can I get you something? A water?” Willow asked. “Yeah, please.” Darting off to find Alexa a drink of water, Willow worked in the background as Alexa fought off her waves of nausea, one by one in silence. Deep breathing seemed to work for the time being.  One deep breath in through her nostrils, followed by one back out through her open mouth.  She counted to ten in her head before reopening her eyes and breathing normally again. Strangely enough the nausea feeling had subsided slightly and she didn’t feel like she was about to throw up anymore as Willow came over and handed her a glass of water. “Thanks.”  Alexa smiled before taking a sip. “This isn’t the first time you’ve felt this way recently.” Willow interrogated her friend, narrowing her eyes and placing both hands onto her hips. “What’s going on with you, Lex? What aren’t you telling me?” “I don’t know. I guess it’s a just tummy bug or something. I can’t seem to shake it, and it comes and goes all over the place.” Alexa admitted before taking another sip of water. Willow appeared to have taken in what Alexa had just said before she spoke next. “Hey, I’ve got an idea. Now, I know this is gonna sound strange, and you’re probably gonna freak out on me, but… just bear with me, ok?” Frowning in confusion, Alexa turned and watched as Willow suddenly disappeared again, this time into the wardrobe to grab something. When she re-emerged, she held something in her other hand. It looked like a box of some sort.  Willow came to stand right in front of her best friend before holding the box out for Alexa to accept. “Now, don’t freak out, ok?” Willow reassured her, lifting both brows. Hesitantly, Alexa reached out to take the box from her friend as she replied. “Ok…” Once she had it in her hand, Alexa lifted it up to get a better look at the packaging. “Will, what is this?” Suddenly her eyes widened as she immediately understood what her friend was insinuating.  The box she held in her hand was a pregnancy test.  Alexa felt the air being sucked from her lungs, making it hard for her to breathe for some unknown reason as she stood, staring down at the box in her hand. After a moment of finding it hard to breathe, let alone speak a single word, Alexa managed to formulate a sentence, questioning her friend’s logic. “Um… Will? This is…” “A pregnancy test, yup.” Willow agreed casually, as if the whole matter were nothing to be concerned about. But it was a big deal… A really BIG DEAL! There was no way Alexa was pregnant. It just wasn’t possible! Sure Dante hadn’t used protection when they were intimate, but she had been on the pill since she was in her teens and never missed a single day… “I’m not pregnant, Will… there’s no way.” Alexa spoke, as if needing to reassure herself of this. “If you’re that sure of yourself, go take the test.” Willow gestured towards the box her friend held in her hand with a nod of her chin. “If you’re not, no harm done, we go on with our lives as if it never happened. But… if you are…” “No, no, no! There’s no buts about this, Will! There can’t be any buts about this!” Alexa sounded a little more frantic now as she looked up at her friend with a concerned expression. “Oh, stop being such a drama queen! Go on, get in there and pee on a stick already.” As she spoke, Willow began to lead her friend by the shoulders towards the door to her ensuite. Trapped in a daze, Alexa kept her eyes on the box in her hand as Willow switched on the light.  It was only as the light turned on that Alexa realised she was now standing in the middle of the bathroom. “Come on, do your thing.” Willow prompted her. Rolling her eyes, Alexa let out a large defiant huff. “Fine! If it’ll get you off my case…” Alexa snapped, reaching down and opening the box. “But I’m warning you, this whole thing is a complete waste of time.” “Yeah, yeah, yeah… just do it already.” Willow replied rather impatiently as she slowly closed the door behind her. “Good luuuuck!” Hearing the door close, Alexa lowered her gaze back down at the test she now held in her hand as she lifted the open box and began reading the instructions of what to do. “This is seriously the dumbest idea you’ve ever had, Will!” she called out for Willow to hear on the other side of the door. “…and you’ve had some pretty dumb ideas over the years!” Without realising it, Alexa’s heart had begun to thud rapidly, so powerfully that she felt it pulsing in her head, over and over and over again. She swallowed away some of her nerves and licked her now incredibly dry lips.  If she was so sure it wouldn’t be positive, then why was she so nervous about this? “There was no way.”  She spoke softly to herself, shaking her head as she tore open the packet and proceeded to lower her underwear before sitting down on the toilet seat. She couldn’t be pregnant; she was on the pill. She told herself that over and over again as she positioned the test underneath her and focused on relaxing. It proved difficult for her initially, but eventually, she managed to relax. Once she had finished following the basic steps of completing the test, she clipped the cap back over the top of it and placed it onto the counter before redressing herself, flushing and washing her hands. Five minutes. The packet had said it would take five minutes before you could check it, for a more accurate result. Deciding she wasn’t waiting inside of the ensuite for the entire time, Alexa opened the bathroom door and came out into the bedroom where Willow sat on the bed waiting. She looked up from her phone with a frown. “Is it done already?” Willow asked, checking her phone for the time. “The test takes five minutes before you get an accurate result.” Alexa explained, coming to sit beside her friend on the bed. “Right… five minutes. I’ve set the timer on my phone…” Willow squealed with a large smile spread wide across her face. “This is so exciting… aren’t you excited, Lex?” “Not really. I already know what it’s gonna be.” Alexa announced confidently, lifting her phone up and unlocking the screen. “Like I said, a complete waste of our time, and your money by the way.” “That sure of yourself, huh?” Willow challenged bumping into Alexa’s shoulder, her left brow now lifted slightly higher than the other. “If you’re not pregnant, then why have you been feeling sick all the time?” Alexa thought for a second before shrugging her shoulders. “Maybe the water in Italy doesn’t agree with me? Who knows, it could be anything, Will. And while we’re on the subject, why are you carrying pregnancy tests around with you anyway?” “I always keep one on me. Have ever since I started having sex.” Willow admitted rather casually with a shrug of her shoulders. “Doesn’t hurt to have one on hand, as you’ve now discovered. You’re welcome, by the way.” Alexa smiled, shaking her head at the thought of thanking her BFF for carrying a pregnancy test around with her in her handbag. This was certainly not something she’d imagined herself doing when she woke up first thing this morning, that’s for sure! “Still got…” Willow paused, looking down at the timer on her phone. “…two minutes and ten seconds left.” Hearing this, Alexa couldn’t help as her mind began to wander. She focused on thinking about her menstrual cycle. Normally, she was very regular with her monthly visitor and now, come to think of it, it had been a couple of weeks since she was expecting it to come calling… and it hadn’t. But she was on the pill, had been for years. Thinking back to double check, she suddenly realised something, and the blood drained from her face momentarily. She had in fact missed taking her pill for a few days recently, not that she meant to. Being kidnapped by the Greco’s wasn’t exactly something she could have planned for. And it wasn’t the only time. What about the time she was at the charity ball? When those men attempted to grab her in the bathroom. She’d missed taking her pill that night as well! Come to think of it, over the past month or so Alexa had missed taking the pill at least a handful of times in total and she began to feel the uneasy sensation of nausea creeping up on her once more. “Will… What if I…” Willow’s excited voice suddenly cut in over hers as she lifted her phone up with a smile. “Not long now! Down to the seconds…” Alexa suddenly felt as the entire room began to spin in large circles, around and around as she remained seated on the bed. She could feel as her heart thudded rapidly within her ribcage, its speed increasing as she felt herself feeling somewhat lightheaded. “Will…” Alexa tried to warn her friend, but before she could her eyes rolled into the back of her head and Alexa slumped over onto the mattress, surprising Willow who turned to watch her flop forward lifelessly. “Holy s**t, Lex? LEX!”
