The Man who Returned

673 Words
The town felt different that morning. Elena noticed it the moment she stepped outside her cottage. People were gathered in small groups along the streets, talking excitedly. Cars she had never seen before were parked near the town hall, and several men in expensive suits walked around with clipboards and cameras. Her stomach tightened. He was already here. Elena held Liam’s small hand tightly as they walked toward the local grocery store. “Mommy, why are there so many strangers?” Liam asked curiously. “Just visitors,” Elena replied quickly. But inside, her heart was beating faster with every step. For three years she had lived peacefully in this quiet town. Now everything felt uncertain. They entered the small grocery store, and Elena immediately noticed the buzz of conversation among the townspeople. “Did you see the cars outside the hotel?” one woman whispered. “They say the billionaire himself arrived this morning,” another replied. Elena pretended not to hear them as she grabbed a basket and began walking through the aisles. Liam happily walked beside her, pointing at random things. “Can we get cookies?” he asked. “We’ll see,” Elena said distractedly. Her mind was racing. What if she ran into Alexander? Would he recognize her? It had only been one night, after all. Maybe she had just been another face in his life. Maybe he wouldn’t even remember her. The thought strangely hurt more than she expected. Suddenly, Liam tugged on her hand. “Mommy, look!” Elena turned her head. And froze. Outside the large front window of the store, a sleek black SUV had just pulled up to the curb. The door opened. A tall man stepped out. Even from a distance, Elena recognized him instantly. Alexander Wolfe. He looked exactly the same as he had three years ago. Tall. Confident. Powerful. Dressed in a perfectly tailored suit, he moved with the quiet authority of someone used to controlling every room he entered. Two men in suits followed behind him as he walked down the street. The townspeople stared openly. It wasn’t every day a billionaire visited their small coastal town. Elena quickly turned away from the window. Her heart was pounding now. “Mommy?” Liam asked. “We’re leaving,” she said quickly. “But we didn’t get cookies—” “Next time.” Elena rushed toward the back exit of the store, trying to remain calm. The last thing she wanted was for Alexander to see her. Or worse… See Liam. But just as she reached the door, it suddenly opened. And someone stepped inside. Elena collided directly with him. Strong hands caught her arms before she could fall. “I’m sorry,” a familiar deep voice said. Elena slowly looked up. Her breath caught. Alexander’s gray eyes stared down at her in surprise. For a moment, neither of them moved. Three years had passed. Yet somehow the memory of that night seemed to return instantly between them. “Elena?” he said quietly. Her heart skipped. He remembered her. Before she could respond, a small voice spoke beside her. “Mommy?” Alexander’s gaze shifted downward. And for the first time, he saw the little boy standing next to her. The boy with dark hair. The boy with gray eyes. Eyes that looked exactly like his. Alexander’s expression didn’t change immediately. But something flickered in his gaze. Something curious. Something confused. Elena felt panic rising inside her. She quickly grabbed Liam’s hand. “Come on, Liam,” she said quickly. Without another word, she rushed past Alexander and out the door. Alexander stood frozen in the grocery store entrance, watching them leave. His mind replayed the moment again. Elena. After all these years. And the little boy… Alexander frowned slightly. Something about the child felt strangely familiar. He couldn’t explain why. But he had the sudden feeling that meeting Elena again was not a coincidence. And that this small town was hiding a secret he hadn’t yet discovered.
