CHAPTER 5 EMMA "Oh my God! Thank goodness Emma never ended up with that guy!" “I couldn't imagine how painful it would have been to see them together. He made her lose her spark and looked like a complete loser!” "I'm sure he turned out to be nothing. Ten years with him and nothing to show for it!" A bubble of laughter echoed from the doorway, and I clutched my dress tightly, trying to hold back my emotions. "Honey, can you believe Emma had to sell our mama's house just to get that loser out of jail?" my older sister Ivy said. Doris laughed. "He is so pathetic. I can only imagine how our mum would be rolling in her grave seeing what her favorite daughter has become." “She was so certain Emma would end up with someone better, but it turned out to be the opposite. I could never picture myself being conned by a broke man. I just hope she finds someone else.” Ivy hissed, "I doubt she will. She'd rather chase degrees and let the gray hairs multiply!" The laughter and chatter grew louder, and I felt my face burn with shame and anger. I wanted to defend, but I knew I had to keep my cool. "Can you believe she actually thought he was the one?" Doris said, giggling. "She was so blinded by love that she couldn't see the red flags waving in her face. Honestly, Mum should come back just to see her 'blessed' child!" Ivy snorted. "Red flags? That guy was a whole alert system! I'm glad I missed their wedding." The room erupted in laughter again, and my pain and humiliation boiled over. I clenched my fists at my sides, took a deep breath, and stood up, my hands shaking as I grasped the doorknob. Once Doris saw me, her face lit up with a smile. “This girl is always late! Come on, join us before it gets cold.” I forced a smile. “Yeah, I know I’m late.” I dropped the cheque on the table in front of Ivy. She raised her eyebrows at me and asked, “What is this?” “Check it out,” I replied. As she read it, her eyes widened in shock. “Did that bum really give you this?” I nodded. “Yes, he did.” I placed the keys to my mother's house on the table. “And these are for Mama's house.” “What?” Doris gasped, her voice filled with disbelief. “Are you serious right now?” “Listen, sis, we need you to call the bank and confirm if this is—” I sharply interrupted her. “Look, I already did. It’s all true.” A sudden silence fell over the room. No one was willing to speak; they were too stunned to say a word. That amount? Neither they nor their bum husbands had ever seen anything like it. Finally, Ivy broke the silence after staring intently at the check. “Emma, where the hell did he get this kind of money?” “He came to my hotel room and said he was sorry, that he really loved me and wanted to give me this.” “Oh my God,” Doris said, her voice trembling. “That is so sweet! We never thought he would have this kind of money.” I felt my fingers clench into fists. Did she just call him sweet,Now he’s suddenly so sweet? “Seventy million dollars?” I heard Ivy mumble slowly, clearly still amazed by the figure. “Come on, go cash this immediately before that bum changes his mind!” I chuckled weakly. “No, he won’t change his mind.” “Come on, Emma!” she shouted. “Let’s not take any chances. Go cash—” I interrupted sharply, “Just shut the f**k up!” "Why the hell did I listen to you in the first place?" I said, my eyes narrowing. "I mean both of you." I laughed—a bitter, regretful sound—as I looked them square in the eyes. "I should have known you two were just miserable old bitches!" "Neither of you is happily married to these bastards, and I hate that I listened to you!" Ivy's face flushed with rage as she slammed the check onto the table. "Now, Emma, you just—" I cut her off, my voice sharp. "No, you wait a minute. Look around you! Everyone but you knows your husband has three baby mamas in Monaco, Australia, and God knows where the last one is. Or maybe you’re just meant for each other." "You also cheat with your brother-in-law, right?" The atmosphere shifted; the room fell into a heavy silence, as if everyone was holding their breath. I turned to Doris, letting out a low chuckle. "Doris, tell the man sitting next to you, whom you call your husband, to stop sending me nudes. I would never sleep with him." I paused, laughing mockingly. "How do you cope, sis? That d**k is just too small to do anything! And it's surprising he has such a small d**k given his size, don't you think?" With that, I walked out, determined to do one of the most foolish things ever. I got into my car and drove to 04 Southern Road. Thirty minutes later, I arrived and quickly headed inside. With a gentle knock on the door, I leaned against the frame in my bikini, my black jacket half-open to cover it up. “Who is it?” I heard a voice that had aged like fine wine. Moments later, Carlos opened the door. “Hey.” His voice sent chills down my spine as my eyes swept over his crisp gray suit. Do rich men really wear suits at night? “The address was on the check. I remember this building,” i said. He slowly closed the door and walked over to me, remarking, “You look good.” I smiled, taking in the luxurious house he now called home. “This is the building you said we would live in, right?” I glanced out at the breathtaking view from the top floor. This place was everything he had described to me. A wide, seductive grin spread across my face as I unbuttoned my jacket and approached him, feeling giddy with excitement. He moved closer, pulling me against him, his hands resting possessively on my waist. I looked up at him and said, “You know when you said you still loved me this morning? I realized I still love you—very, very much. I should have believed you. It’s just my sisters… they got into my head.” I crouched down, my hands reaching to cup his d**k. “I’m glad we found our way—” But before I could finish, a feminine voice interrupted us. “Honey, I’m done!” Colette rushed out from the next room, forcing me to wrap my jacket tighter around my bikini. Colette wore that bright smile she always had, her arms intertwined with Carlos’s. “Hey, Emma! Are you coming with us for our engagement dinner?” There she was—the same woman I had almost confronted two years ago. Standing in my space, wearing my ring, looking at me with that smug expression. That son of a b***h, Carlos, humiliated me in front of her again. I couldn’t believe he let me pour out my heart while she was right there. This woman was living my life, the one I had worked so hard for over the past ten years. He had come to me, professing his love, and now he was preparing for an engagement party? Wait a minute—how does that make sense? He knew he was going to propose to Colette and still chose to come by and say he loved me? I quickly rushed out holding onto my unbuttoned jacket to cover my nakedness,I had poured so much into that jewelry, and I wasn’t about to let another woman wear it. Neither was I going to let a man play me twice and go Scott free.
