Vane didnβt ask her to dance; he commanded it.
His hand slid from her waist to her palm, his fingers interlacing with hers as he led her down the obsidian grand staircase. The crowd of masked predators parted like a black sea before a shark. Every eye followed the human girl in the snow-stained coat, held firmly against the chest of the most feared man in the realm.
"Don't look at them," Vane breathed, his voice a low vibration against her temple. "Look only at me".
As they reached the center of the floor, the music shifted. The violins grew frantic, a rhythmic, pulsing beat that felt like a hunt. Vane pulled her in closeβtoo close. One hand anchored her lower back, the other holding her hand aloft.
They began to move. Vane didn't dance like a man; he moved like a predator circling its prize. Each step was heavy, deliberate, forcing Elara to match his primal rhythm.
"You're shaking, little bird," he murmured.
"Youβre terrifying," Elara countered, her heart hammering against her ribs.
A slow, dangerous smirk pulled at his lips. "Good. Fear keeps you sharp. But itβs not fear thatβs making your pulse race like a trapped rabbit, is it?.
He spun her, and for a moment, the world was a blur of gold and shadow. When he pulled her back, his chest slammed against hers. The "Lucky Magic" in her blood flared again, a golden spark jumping between their skin
The ballroom temperature seemed to skyrocket. Vaneβs eyes bled into a predatory black, his pupils swallowing the gold. He leaned down, his nose grazing the sensitive skin of her neck. He inhaled sharply, a low growl vibrating through his throat.
"They can smell you," he whispered, his grip tightening until she was lifted slightly off her toes. "They can smell the magic in your veins. They want to tear you apart to see how it tastes.
He turned her sharply, his body shielding her from the hungry stares of the Shifter Lords. "But theyβll have to go through me. And I donβt share whatβs mine.
At that moment, Elara realized this wasn't just a dance. It was a declaration of war. Vane wasn't just protecting her; he was marking her in front of his entire kingdom. He was the Alpha, and she was the obsession he would burn the world to keep.
The music didn't stop this time; it curdled. The violins hit a dissonant, screeching note as a man stepped from the shadows of the high pillars.
He was broader than Vane, his skin scarred and his hair white as a dead winter. This was Silas, the Alpha of the Northern Cragsβa man whose pack was built on bone and brutality.
"Youβve grown soft, Vane," Silas boomed, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. "Bringing a human to the Solstice? Marking a scentless little rabbit as your mate? The Council won't see this as a claim. Theyβll see it as a weakness.
Vane didn't let go of Elaraβs waist. If anything, his grip became a vice. His body went perfectly stillβthe stillness of a mountain before an avalanche.
"Step back, Silas," Vane said. The calm in his voice was more terrifying than the shouting. "Youβre breathing my air.
Silas laughed, a harsh, barking sound. He walked a slow circle around the dancing pair, his eyes raking over Elara with a disgusting, predatory hunger.
"She smells of snow and... something else," Silas mused, leaning in. "Is that magic, Vane? Is that why you're hiding her? You found a Golden-Blooded human and you want to keep the power for yourself?
Before Elara could blink, Silas lunged. He didn't go for Vaneβhe went for her.
Vane moved faster than the human eye could track,There was a sound like a thunderclap. Vaneβs fist caught Silas mid-air, slamming into the rival Alphaβs chest. The force sent Silas skidding twenty feet across the obsidian floor, his claws leaving jagged white gouges in the stone.
The ballroom erupted in snarls. The guests weren't just watching anymore; they were shifting. Fur sprouted from skin, bones cracked and reformed, and the air filled with the scent of wet dog and ozone.
Vane didnβt shift. He didn't need to. He stood over Elara, his eyes glowing with a terrifying, ancient light. Shadows began to rise from the floor like black ink, swirling around him until he looked ten feet tall.
"A challenge, then?" Vaneβs voice was a chorus of a thousand wolves. "If you want her, Silas, you have to take her from my cold, dead hands. But I promise youβyouβll be dead long before Iβm even cold".
Silas stood up, blood trickling from his mouth, a wicked grin on his face. "To the death, then. At the stroke of midnight."
