Chapter 15 - Ethan

1524 Words
I had been pouring over every book in the library for hours and the words started to blur together in front of my eyes. Somebody really needs to digitize the werewolf lore books. I say to Ronan, my wolf. Don't look at me! I don't even have hands! He gives his version of a chuckle, which sounds more like a series of growls, as he wags his tail in happiness of his own stupid joke. Could you focus? Our Alpha asked for our help. I sigh in exasperation, slamming the book shut. I had only seen the infected mark of my Luna in Bree's mind link, but it looked like it was painful. It didn't help that I could see and feel Bree's pain, she tried to hide it ofcourse but finding her mate this injured was very upsetting. You worry too much. Our Luna will be fine, I can tell. Ronan starts to violently scratch his ear with his back leg. Absentmindedly I scratch the same spot on my ear and flip through the next book. It's weird having 2 minds sharing a body, but you get used to it. And how do you know? From that one second we saw her in the infirmary? I roll my eyes at him, before focusing on a small paragraph in the book. "A mark is a sacred symbol, joining together 2 Wolves in mind, body and spirit. Forcing a mark on someone against their will, can have severe physical and mental consequences on the marked. While the consequences for the marker are less obvious, over time they can go mad with unsatisfiable feelings of lust." I read out loud, having finally captured Ronans attention for our assignment. Why would anyone mark someone against their wil? He asks with obvious disgust for the idea itself. I don't know, but I'm thinking this might be what's wrong with our Luna. "Ethan? Get your butt up to my office!" Bree's almost panicked voice sounds over the mind link, interrupting me before I can continue to read. "On my way, I found something BTW, so you might wanna try saying please?" she doesn't answer so I grab the book and rush out of the library. It's on the ground floor so I jump the stairs 3 at a time and enter Bree's office without knocking. She's standing behind her desk, papers strewn all over it. Behind her is an actual white board with pictures of the missing girls and pieces of red string connecting them to a large question mark in the middle. "You've been busy." I say, suppressing a hint of worry from my voice. "What's up with the spiderweb board?" I watch as Bree downs her glass of whiskey while looking at the board herself. "I don't know. They do it in the movies and I thought it might help." she pours herself another glass and gets one for me as well. I should really get rid of that stash of glasses and whiskey in her office, I think to myself and Ronan nods in agreement. "Shouldn't you be with your mate?" I ask, raising an eyebrow at her. She moves to gulp her second whiskey down but I move as fast as I can to stop her. The glass shatters on the ground and for a second she just stares at the pieces, the next second I'm flat on my back in the middle of her office with her knee on my chest. That's what you get for attacking an Alpha. Ronan scolds, already lowering himself to lessen his energy in the room. Shut up, you know we had to. "First, that was rude." Bree says, her knee pressing harder against my throat for a moment before she gets up to get a new drink. "Second, she's sleeping. Now get a seat, I have to tell you something." "You really don't need another drink." I tell her as I get up off the floor and join her at her desk. She simply looks at me and nudges the second glass towards me. "Believe me, I do. And you'll want one too when I tell you what I discovered." I open my mouth to object but she pushes her aura out for a split second. She never uses her aura like that, so I raise my eyebrows but sit down in one of the small chairs in front of her desk. "I think my mate is another missing girl." my mouth falls open, I didn't know what I had expected her to say but it surely wasn't this. "She told you this?" "Not in that many words. She's absolutely terrified, and after I saw the scars and bruises all over her body I understand why." she shivers at the memory, the thought of her mate in pain causing her absolute agony. I walk over to her and hug her tightly. She doesn't like people touching her but I know she doesn't mind me in moments like this. She let's me hug her for a few seconds more before pushing me away with a small smile. "Alright. She told me she was taught the dominant wolf bites weaker Wolves to make them his. She thought since her wolf told her to bite me, that her wolf might be bigger than Keena." she chuckles softly at the thought. My eyes grow big and I glance at her neck. "She marked you already?" "No, i***t. She scared herself and barely pierced the skin." she rolls her eyes at me. "But you want her to mark you?" I wiggle my eyebrows at her. "Dude! That's so not the point right now! Focus!" she smacks the whiteboard to get me back to her. "You're right, I'm sorry. Why did that story make you think she's an unreported missing girl?" "It's the way she kept talking about an 'us', he marked us, he lied to us. Why would there be an us if she believed marking was a one way street?" I gasp as I start connecting dots in my head and I grab the book from her desk where I dropped it when I came in. Flipping rapidly to the pages I find the one I'm looking for and hold it out to Bree who takes it curiously. "Look, the last paragraph on page 393. It's about one way marks!" she reads the paragraph and looks at me in surprise. "This could explain why her mark is so infected! Does it talk about a way to cure it?" she flips the page and frowns before smacking the heavy book on the desk. I look at the next page and see a large ink stain covering more than half of page 394. I curse under my breath. "Can you read anything?" we both strain our eyes, trying to decipher anything. "Something confusion, constant pain. Multi... Could be multiple? Stupid ink! And then down here it says true mate, something, something, dammit!" Bree slams the book shut and throws it against the door behind me, barely missing my head. "There has to be another copy right?" she asks, pleading me with her eyes. "Every pack under the Elder Wolf Alliance should have a copy of the Wolf lore books. I'll start calling the closest packs in the morning." I smile encouragingly at her. "Cheer up Bree! You found your mate! The book says a true mate can break the one way bond right?" "All we could read was true mate! It could have said the true mate dies if they try to mark over it. Or the true mate will turn into a monster if the bond isn't broken before midnight." She flops down in her chair and pouts at me. Pouting used to be able to get me to do anything for her when we were kids, to be honest it was still urging me to make her happy again. "Stop the pouting, Bree. Or you'll get me in trouble with Mrs. Gillian again for stealing cookies." I wink at her, trying to relieve the tension with the memory. We always snuck into the kitchen to steal the freshly baked cookies. We never got into real trouble for it, at most we got an extra dish washing duty. A small smile tugs on the corners of her mouth but her eyes are far away. Luna is outside the door. Ronan interupts, pulling my attention away from Bree. I listen and pick up the faintest shuffle of feet outside the office. I look at my best friend and Alpha but she seems to have te treated to a dark place, so I get up to let her mate in. That should help her right? Yes, Luna will help Alpha. I wanna meet her! I ignore him and open the door to find a tiny woman in Bree's clothes standing awkwardly in the hallway. Her silvery eyes are wide in fear and widen even further when she sees me. She is very beautiful and she smells really interesting, almost like the night air during a full moon. "Goodevening, Luna. It's nice to finally meet you."
