What the Heart Denies

The quiet hospital room was dimly lit, the sun outside just beginning to fade into a golden dusk. Daniel sat on the chair beside Alif’s bed, his eyes fixed on her bandaged side rising and falling with every breath. Suddenly, Alif’s lashes fluttered, and she shifted slightly. Her lips parted, and in a low, hoarse whisper, she said, “Water…” Daniel instantly stood up, pouring water into the glass with steady hands that betrayed the chaos inside him. He held the glass gently to her lips, supporting her head as she took small sips. “You okay?” he asked softly. “Should I call the doctor?” Alif blinked and whispered, “I’m fine.” Daniel set the glass aside, then quietly moved back to the chair, watching her with a strange mix of worry and relief. “Does it hurt?” he asked, voice barely above a whisper. “The shot?” “A little,” Alif replied, “But it’ll be fine.” Daniel nodded, then looked down. A moment passed in silence before Alif asked, “What are you doing here?” “I was… worried,” Daniel admitted. Alif raised a weak eyebrow. “Why? I’m just someone.” Daniel leaned forward slightly, eyes locked on hers. “You’re not just someone. I was scared, Alif. Genuinely scared. If anything had happened to you… I wouldn’t have forgiven myself.” Alif stared at him for a moment. “Why?” she asked again, this time softer. Daniel exhaled slowly, struggling with words that felt foreign on his tongue. “I don’t know,” he said honestly. “But you have… something. That day at the warehouse—what you did—it meant something. You saved my sister.” “I didn’t do it for you,” Alif replied quietly. “I made Mira a promise. And it was my duty.” Daniel gave a faint smile, one touched with sadness. “Still… you did it. When no one else would’ve. That counts for something.” The room had grown quieter after their brief conversation. Alif shifted slightly, her breath still shallow from the discomfort. After a few moments, she looked at Daniel and said softly, “Daniel, you can leave now. I’m fine.” Daniel’s gaze didn’t shift from her face. “I’m not going anywhere,” he said calmly. “I’ll stay here with you—and I won’t leave this hospital until you walk out of this room.” Alif let out a tired breath. “That’s not needed.” “It is,” Daniel replied firmly. “And if not here, I’ll wait outside. But I’m not leaving.” Just then, a knock broke the stillness. Daniel responded, “Come in.” The door opened, and the doctor stepped in with a reassuring smile. “How are you feeling now?” he asked Alif. “Better,” she replied. “I’ll need to check your wound,” the doctor said, glancing at Daniel. “Could you give us a moment?” Daniel nodded and quietly stepped out, leaving the room. Inside, the doctor gently examined the bandaged wound on Alif’s side. “It’s healing well. You’ll recover soon.” “I know,” Alif murmured. “When can I be discharged?” The doctor glanced at her vitals and shook his head. “You just woke up after major surgery. Your body needs time. A few more days here, at least.” As he checked her chart, he added with a small smile, “You’re very lucky. Your boyfriend really loves you.” Alif blinked. “Who?” “The guy who was sitting here all night,” the doctor replied. “Didn’t touch food or water. Didn’t rest. Just sat here waiting for you. And arranged your blood like it was nothing.” Alif looked away. “He’s not my boyfriend.” “Husband then?” “No,” she said, trying not to smile. “Just… someone I know.” The doctor chuckled. “Doesn’t look like just someone. I’ve seen many cases, Ms. Alif. People like him don’t show up for just anyone.” Alif didn’t respond, but her silence said more than words could. When the doctor left, Daniel stood up immediately. “Is she okay?” “She’s doing better,” the doctor said. “But still weak. She needs rest and care—don’t pressure her. Let her heal.” Daniel nodded, watching the doctor walk away. He glanced back at the door, heart heavy but strangely… hopeful. He didn’t know what they were—what they could be—but he knew one thing for sure: He wasn’t going anywhere. Daniel walked quietly into the hospital room. Alif turned her head slightly, her eyes meeting his. “I hope there’s no issue if I sit here with you?” he asked gently. Alif shook her head, her voice soft. “No… no issue.” He took the chair beside her, and for a while, neither of them said anything. The silence between them wasn’t awkward—it was filled with things left unsaid. A few minutes later, a nurse walked in with a tray of dinner. “Time to eat,” she said, placing it on the side table. Before she could set it up, Daniel stood. “I’ll take it,” he said, and brought the tray closer. The nurse smiled and added, “If you need anything, just call me.” Daniel nodded and turned his attention to Alif. He adjusted the bed slightly to make her more comfortable and slid the tray table in front of her. “Doctor said you’re still very weak, so finish this properly.” Alif gave him a side-eye glare. “I can take care of myself.” Daniel smiled. “I’m serious. Doctor’s instructions. Not mine.” Alif picked up the spoon slowly. “Have you eaten?” “Not yet,” he replied. “I will. Later.” Alif raised an eyebrow. “Later? It’s already night.” Daniel leaned back a little, teasing, “Why? Are you worried about me?” Alif scoffed, but a small smirk tugged at her lips. “No. Not at all. But the doctor told me you haven’t eaten or even had water since yesterday.” He shrugged. “Didn’t feel like it.” Alif paused for a second, her tone softening. “You should eat. Otherwise, they’ll have to admit you in the next room.” Daniel chuckled. “So this is your plan—to keep me in the same hospital? Convenient.” She rolled her eyes. “Just order something.” “I will. Only if you promise to eat all this.” Alif gave him a sarcastic glance but nodded faintly and took a bite. Daniel watched her quietly for a moment—her determination, even in this state, her pride, her strength—it all made sense now. Why she affected him the way she did. He reached for his phone. “Fine. Ordering food. You win.” But deep down, he knew… it was never about winning. It was about not wanting to leave her side—even for a second.
