Chapter 2

I grabbed my car keys and headed out. The bar was deafening with laughter and music; men and women clustered around tables. And there he was. The man in the center, commanding the entire room without a word—Evan. A woman sat at his side, her dress so revealing that the fabric on her body didn’t even add up to half of my blouse. Someone shouted from the crowd. “Go for it!” The woman swung her long legs across and planted herself on Evan’s lap. Cheers erupted instantly. I couldn’t tell who leaned in first, but within seconds, the two of them were kissing, hot and hungry, tongues tangled like they’d known each other forever. Evan’s arms tightened around her waist. The woman kissed him even harder. The room roared with whistles and screams, camera flashes bursting like lightning across his sharp jawline. The sight was a blade, driving straight into my chest. The ache in my heart was so familiar it almost stole my breath. I lowered my gaze, pressing down the storm rising in my eyes, fingers digging into the hem of my sleeve. Pretending not to see a thing, I walked forward. Someone whispered in Evan’s ear. “She’s here.” Only then did he break the kiss, his lips still glistening, and lift his indifferent gaze to me. He didn’t say a word. He just watched me, that mocking curve to his mouth, his eyes burning with challenge. The entire bar turned toward me. Every gaze was sharp, expectant. They were waiting. Waiting for me to snap, to scream like a scorned mate, to demand why my Alpha was betraying me on the very night of our bonding. Inside my chest, my wolf stirred restlessly. “Fiona, stay calm! What good would it do to lose control? Six years ago, we learned this truth: in the wolf realm, an Omega’s fury is nothing but entertainment for others.” I inhaled deeply, forcing the storm back down. Evan looked at me for a few seconds more before shifting his attention away. And then, as if twisting the knife deeper, he pulled the woman against him and kissed her again harder this time, reckless and deliberate. He was doing it on purpose. On the very day we bonded, he was showing the entire world how little I meant. The image cut me cold, my veins filling with ice as a dull ache spread through my ribs. The crowd’s cheers swelled louder. They were desperate for my reaction. So was he. But I wouldn’t give it to him. Swallowing down everything clawing at my throat, I stepped forward, placed the hangover pill in front of him, and said quietly, “Take care of yourself.” Evan didn’t take it. Instead, he grabbed my wrist, yanking me forward, so suddenly I nearly stumbled into his lap. His voice was ragged, his fury barely contained as he snarled, “Do you even have a heart? Don’t you feel jealous? Or are they right—are you nothing but a greedy, soulless gold-digger?” His words were knives. Each syllable lodged deep in my throat, choking me with all the things I couldn’t say, all the truths I could never reveal. My wolf, silent now, curled into the shadows of my chest. I met his blazing eyes with a calm I didn’t feel. “Go back early.” Setting the pill firmly on the table, I turned and walked away. Dozens of eyes followed my retreating back. The whispers rose behind me like snakes. “Alpha Evan, what’s she doing? Is she playing hard to get?” “Alpha Evan, that woman’s trying to provoke you, isn’t she?” And then came his voice. Low, rough, and quivering with rage. “Get out. Don’t you dare mention her to me again.”
