Chapter 8: Shattered Illusions

1423 Words
Even though it was still intact, Dante’s estate showed signs of the recent chaos: broken windows, a few pieces of rubble lying around the halls, and the solemn faces of his men moving with a tight urgency. With a coffee cup tightly gripped in her palms, Francesca took a seat at the magnificent dining room table of the West wing. She was staring at a nearby television, its screen full of articles about the unrest and violence that the city was experiencing. It was a rolling newscast. Her familiar, peaceful world has turned into a battlefield. With a tired expression on his face, Dante walked into the room. Despite his immaculate suit, his posture revealed the wear and tear of the previous several days. He gave Francesca a nod and went to the sideboard to get a drink for himself. "How are you holding up?" he asked with a sweet yet strained voice Francesca raised her head, exhaustion darkening her eyes. "I'm trying to. There is so much to take in.” Taking a sip of his whiskey, he nodded. "I understand how difficult it must be. This is not what I wanted for you.” With a sigh, she put down her coffee. "I am aware. However, it doesn't make it easier. What do we know about Lorenzo's brother?” Dante's face became hard. “Not a lot. He is a ghost who works primarily in the background. However, he has been acquiring power for years and is brutal.” Vince added his voice from where he was lying in the corner of the room, recuperating. "His name is Enrico. He seems even more dangerous than Lorenzo, based on what I've heard. He allegedly has ties to some of the worst characters in the underground.” Francesca's heart sank. “Fantastic. We are going up against a ghost that has allies from the underworld.” Dante had a fixed jaw and a fierce look. "It goes beyond that. Enrico had been waiting for his opportunity to act. The chance presented itself perfectly when Lorenzo died. We must always be prepared for anything. A tap on the door brought Marco, one of Dante's guys, inside. He walked up with a gloomy expression. "We have some news, boss. It appears like Enrico's men are moving already. We have increased the number of patrols around the estate. Dante's gaze grew strained. "Good. I want every security detail to be expanded. Nobody enters or exits without my permission. “Got it, boss," Marco said, pirouetting around to execute the command. Francesca felt the weight of the situation bearing down on her. She cast a quick glance at Vince, who was scowling while attempting to sit up straight. "Now what should we do? How can we defeat an adversary who is perpetually one step ahead?” Dante's thoughts were obviously racing as he kept his eyes focused on the security monitors. "We must launch an offensive. We are doomed if we allow him to take the lead.” Vince winced a little as he nodded. "I'll gather my men." We must lay traps and obtain intelligence. We cannot allow Enrico's men to take advantage of our state.” Francesca saw a sharp rise in morale. "I would like to assist, but I'm not sure what I can do.” Dante’ eyes softened slightly. “Francesca, this isn't your fight. Though I'm grateful for the sentiment,” Her voice was forceful as she interrupted, "But I'm already in it." "I want to help if there's anything I can do." After giving her a long look, Dante sighed. "All right. However, you must avoid being in the direct line of fire. I don't want to lose you.” With a look of both relief and frustration, she nodded. "I'll make every effort." The estate became a flurry of activity. Dante's men moved quickly to erect security and secure the estate. Armed guards were stationed around the formerly peaceful grounds, their eyes darting over every shadow in search of possible danger. Francesca discovered herself in a conference room with Vince, going through security reports and maps. It was an intimidating undertaking to devise possible countermeasures, organize intelligence, and try to predict Enrico's next move. Vince pointed to a location on the map and stated, "This here." This is where Enrico is known to keep a safe house. Though it's unlikely, if we can locate it, we could gain some advantage.” Francesca followed his finger with her eyes. "How can we locate it? We have no idea where to begin.” Vince scowled. It's a needle in a haystack.” “However, I may be able to assist, I have some contacts. I'll get in touch with them.” With her mind racing, Francesca walked the room while Vince answered phones and sent texts. It was thrilling and terrifying to join the battle against Enrico. She aspired to change things, to be more than a spectator in her own life, but danger was always there, hovering like a black shadow above them. Concern lines appeared on Dante's face as he entered the room. "We've stepped up patrols and installed perimeter alarms. But I need additional hands on the ground, eyes and ears.” Determined, Francesca raised her head. "I can support you in that. I know a few people who could be of help” Dante furrowed his brow. "Really? I had no idea you were connected.” In an attempt to sound nonchalant, she shrugged. “While working at the bakery, I made a few pals. Individuals with knowledge of your world.” Dante nodded after giving her suggestion some thought. "All right. It is worth a try if you can provide us with information. But be careful. I don't want to lose you over some foolish act of bravery.” Isabella nodded, determination growing. "I'll exercise caution." The mansion was peaceful yet tense as night fell. With a low, frantic voice, Isabella was speaking on the phone with one of her connections. "Any unusual movement or information concerning Enrico or his men is appreciated. This is very important.” Her contact, an investigative journalist in the area, assured her she would be kept informed. With her stomach knotted with anxiety, Francesca ended the call and looked around the grounds. Dante's men were patrolling the estate at full alert, their attention unbroken. Everything that had once been familiar suddenly felt like a battlefield, with every shadow being a threat. Francesca followed Dante inside the control room, where feeds from multiple security cameras were shown on monitors. Dante's expression was serious as he stared at the screens. "Anything?" She questioned, attempting to maintain a steady tone. Dante gave a headshake. "Nothing yet. But whatever happens, we're prepared.” They were both startled by the sound of an explosion far away. The lights flickered and the earth shook as though the very air surrounding them had been charged with peril. "What was that?" Francesca asked, heart palpitating. Dante had a determined, gloomy expression on his face. “We're being targeted. It is just getting started.” Panic sprang out as the estate's alarms went off. Guards scrambled to take up positions, and Francesca went purposefully behind Dante, guiding his men and attempting to gauge the situation. A well-planned attack swiftly overpowered the mansion's protection. With their superior numbers and weaponry, Enrico's men had come prepared, stretching the boundaries of the fence. Dante dragged Isabella away while yelling incoherently. "Go to the panic room. Remain there till we figure this out.” Francesca was adamant, her voice hard, "No." "I am not going to hide, while everyone else fights.” Dante fixed his flaming eyes on Francesca. “This is not a discussion. I need you to be secure.” Before she could say anything further, several explosions shook the exterior walls of the estate. Shouts and gunfire erupted, filling the air. As Francesca went to the panic room per Dante's instructions, her heart was racing. With the heavy door shut behind her, quiet descended upon the room, only to be disturbed by her labored breathing. Her nerves were killing her as she paced the little room. Every second that went by seemed to go on forever. She wants to get outside, engage in combat, and take action of any kind. Each minute was painfully long and filled with anticipation. Then something stopped her in her tracks through the thick walls. A far-off, reverberating cry, "Dante!" There was no mistaking the voice.
