Good Nutrition and Dietetics as a Career Chapter 13: A Leader with Responsibilities The morning after the election, the campus looked normal again, but for Shem Orucho, life had completely changed. Students were now greeting him differently. “Congratulations, leader!” one shouted outside the cafeteria. Brian laughed. “Look at you, Mr. Representative.” Shem shook his head. “I’m still the same person.” But leadership quickly brought responsibility. That afternoon Shem attended his first student council meeting. Different representatives sat around a long table discussing campus problems. One student complained about poor hostel conditions. Another spoke about lack of laboratory equipment. When it was Shem’s turn, he stood up slowly. “The School of Health Sciences needs better practical training,” he said. “Nutrition students need more opportunities in hospitals and communities.” The room became quiet. Some students nodded in agreement. But from the corner of the room, Daniel Mutua was watching him carefully. The rivalry was far from over. --- Chapter 14: A Growing Bond One evening Shem and Amina Njeri sat outside the library studying. Their books were open to a topic called Medical Nutrition Therapy. Amina pointed at a paragraph. “Did you know that diet alone can help control hypertension?” she asked. Shem smiled. “That’s why nutritionists are important.” They studied for hours, discussing cases and sharing ideas. But their conversations slowly became more personal. Amina closed her book. “Why did you choose nutrition?” she asked. Shem thought for a moment. “At first… it wasn’t really my choice,” he admitted. “But after seeing children suffering from malnutrition… I realized something.” “What?” she asked softly. “That food can save lives.” Amina looked at him with admiration. “You’re going to become a great nutritionist one day.” Shem felt his heart beat faster. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Brian suddenly appeared again. “I swear I will start charging entrance fees for this romance,” he joked. Both Shem and Amina laughed. But everyone could see something special was growing between them. --- Chapter 15: Trouble at Home Just as things seemed to be improving, bad news arrived. One evening Shem received a phone call from his mother. Her voice sounded worried. “Shem… we have a problem.” “What happened?” he asked. “The harvest this season was poor. We cannot raise the remaining school fees.” Shem felt his stomach tighten. His next semester payment was due soon. Without it, he might be forced to defer his studies. After the call ended, Shem sat quietly in his hostel room. Brian noticed immediately. “What’s wrong?” Shem explained everything. Brian looked serious. “You’ve worked too hard to stop now.” Later that night, Amina also came to check on him. When she heard the problem, she spoke gently. “There might be scholarships or student support funds.” Shem nodded slowly. “I’ll try to find a solution.” But deep inside, he feared the worst. --- Chapter 16: A Life-Changing Case During the hospital internship the next week, something happened that would deeply affect Shem. A nurse rushed into the nutrition department. “We have an emergency case,” she said. A young pregnant woman had been admitted to the hospital. She was extremely weak and undernourished. The doctor explained the situation. “She has severe iron-deficiency anemia and poor dietary intake.” Mr. Otieno turned to the students. “This is a serious nutrition case.” Shem carefully reviewed the patient’s diet history. The woman had been eating very little due to poverty. Mostly tea and small amounts of ugali. No fruits. No vegetables. No protein. Shem spoke carefully. “She needs iron-rich foods like beans, green leafy vegetables, and fortified foods.” Mr. Otieno nodded. “And iron supplements.” Over the next few days, Shem helped monitor her nutritional recovery. Slowly, the patient began to improve. One afternoon the woman smiled weakly and said something that Shem would never forget. “Thank you for helping me.” At that moment Shem realized something powerful. Every piece of knowledge he was learning had the potential to save someone’s life. But outside the hospital walls, new problems were already forming. Daniel Mutua was quietly planning revenge. Shem’s school fees deadline was approaching. And his feelings for Amina were becoming stronger every day. The journey of Shem Orucho, the young nutrition student from Maasai Mara University, was only getting more complicated. Good Nutrition and Dietetics as a Career Chapter 17: Shadows of Revenge Life on campus continued, but tension quietly surrounded Shem Orucho. Since losing the election, Daniel Mutua had kept a low profile. But people close to him knew he was not the type to forget humiliation. One afternoon Shem was walking toward the lecture hall when Daniel suddenly blocked his path. “So… Mr. Leader,” Daniel said with a sarcastic smile. Shem remained calm. “Daniel.” “You think winning that election makes you important?” Daniel continued. “I never said that,” Shem replied. Daniel leaned closer. “You may have fooled the students, but sooner or later they will see the real you.” Brian stepped forward angrily. “Leave him alone.” Daniel laughed and walked away. But the message was clear. The conflict between them was not finished. --- Chapter 18: Amina’s Confession That evening, Shem met Amina near the quiet garden behind the library. The sun was setting over the hills of Narok, painting the sky orange. Amina seemed unusually nervous. “Shem, can I ask you something?” she said. “Of course.” “Do you ever think about your future… after university?” Shem smiled slightly. “All the time.” “And?” she asked. “I want to work in community nutrition. Help fight malnutrition in villages.” Amina nodded slowly. “That’s one of the reasons I admire you.” Shem looked at her curiously. “Admire me?” Amina took a deep breath. “I didn’t just come to study here,” she admitted. “I also wanted to meet people who care about making a difference.” She hesitated before continuing. “And… I think I’ve found one.” Shem understood what she meant. For a moment the world around them felt quiet. Then he spoke gently. “Amina… I feel the same.” A warm smile spread across her face. For the first time since they met, their feelings were finally clear. --- Chapter 19: The Research Opportunity A few weeks later, an exciting announcement came from Dr. Achieng during class. “Our department is starting a nutrition research project,” she said. The class immediately became interested. “The research will focus on childhood malnutrition in rural communities around Narok County.” She continued. “We need a small team of serious students.” Many hands went up. But Dr. Achieng pointed directly at Shem. “Shem Orucho. I want you to lead the student research team.” The class murmured in surprise. Brian whispered excitedly. “Leader again!” The project would involve collecting data, interviewing families, and studying diet patterns among children. It was a huge opportunity. But it also meant extra work and responsibility. After class, Amina congratulated him. “This is perfect for you,” she said. Shem smiled. “Yes… but it will be challenging.” Still, he accepted the responsibility. Little did he know that this research project would soon reveal shocking truths about nutrition in the community. --- Chapter 20: The Breaking Point Just as Shem began planning the research project, the problem he feared most finally arrived. A message from the university finance office. Outstanding fees must be cleared immediately. Otherwise, he would not be allowed to continue the semester. Shem felt the weight of the situation. Without money, his dream could end. That night he sat alone outside his hostel room. Brian joined him quietly. “You look like someone fighting a storm,” Brian said. Shem handed him the message. Brian read it slowly. “This is serious.” Shem nodded. “I may have to defer my studies.” The words felt heavy in the air. Just then Amina arrived. She sat beside them silently. After hearing the situation, she spoke firmly. “No. You’re not giving up.” “But what choice do I have?” Shem asked. Amina looked determined. “We will find a solution.” Brian nodded. “Yes. You didn’t fight this far to stop now.” For the first time that night, Shem felt a small spark of hope. But the truth was clear. The next few weeks would decide whether Shem’s dream would survive… or collapse completely. ---
