Claire got off the car downtown shortly before eight. She hailed another taxi to Briarwood Residences and arrived at half past eight. She hurried into the apartment building and entered her home. Sophie struck a dramatic pose by the doorway, waiting to greet her like a loyal sentinel. Claire paused, then burst out laughing. The heavy gloom weighing on her chest lifted substantially in an instant. "If you'd taken any longer, the food going cold would be the least of your worries. Your only best friend would have starved!" Seeing her smile, Sophie put on a stern face. "Don't work this late from now on. Spend more time with me." Claire kicked off her shoes, set down her bag and took off her coat as she walked inside. "Alright. Tomorrow's Saturday, so I'll spend the whole day with you.
