CHAPTER 6: THE SPACE BETWEEN THEM (almost)

327 Words
“Why are you here, Kael?” Straight to the point. No games. But Kael smiled like this was a game. “I wanted to see if the rumors were true.” “And?” He looked at her—really looked. Not like before. Not like she was nothing. But like she was something he couldn’t figure out. “They didn’t do you justice.” Elara’s jaw tightened slightly. “You came all the way here just to say that?” “No,” Kael said softly. “I came to understand why I can’t stop thinking about you.” Silence. Heavy. Dangerous. Wrong. “You should,” Elara said coldly. “It’ll save you.” Kael stepped even closer. Now there was barely any space between them. “And if I don’t want to be saved?” Elara didn’t move. Didn’t step back. Didn’t breathe. “You’re confusing interest with obsession,” she said quietly. Kael tilted his head. “And you’re confusing control with indifference.” Her eyes flashed. Wrong move. But he didn’t care. Not anymore. “Tell me something, Elara,” he continued, his voice lower now, almost a whisper. “If you hate me so much…” His gaze dropped briefly to her lips. “…why didn’t you push me away?” That did it. Elara placed her hand on his chest— Not soft. Not gentle. But firm. Stopping him. Their faces were inches apart. “You think this means something?” she said, her voice sharp but controlled. “It means nothing.” Kael didn’t move. Didn’t step back. “Then prove it.” The air shifted. One second. Two. Three. And for a moment— It felt like everything might break. But Elara pulled her hand away. Stepped back. Rebuilding the distance. Rebuilding the walls. “You’re not worth the mistake,” she said coldly. But her heartbeat? Too fast. Too loud. Too real.
