The twig snapped again. I froze. Not because I was scared. Because I knew exactly where it had come from. Twenty feet to my left. Behind the trees. I turned my head slowly. Nothing. Just the northern forest stretching beneath the moonlight. Tall trees. Dark shadows. A thin layer of mist hovering close to the ground. I narrowed my eyes. “Hello?” Silence. I waited. Nothing moved.
