Chapter 5: The Awakening

Nymeria’s POV
Nyx still stood between me and Zevran.
Her hand was shaking slightly, but she did not move.
“I said she is leaving,
” Nyx repeated.
Zevran looked at her again.
His voice stayed calm.
“Then you will have to move her yourself.
”
Nyx frowned.
“Why are you so focused on her?”
A pause.
Even the air felt tighter.
Zevran answered slowly.
“Because she is already reacting.
”
My heart skipped.
Nyx turned to me fast.
“Nymeria, what does he mean?”
I did not answer.
Because I felt it.
Again.That strange pull inside me was stronger now.
Like something was responding to his voice.
Zevran took one step closer.
Nyx immediately stepped back with me.
“Do not come near her,
” Nyx said firmly.
Zevran stopped.
He looked at me only.
“You are not afraid,
” he said.
I swallowed.
“I do not know what I am,
” I answered quietly.
That made him pause.
Just for a moment.
Then his voice softened slightly.
“You will know soon.
”
Nyx shook her head.
“No. She is not going anywhere with you.
”
Zevran finally looked at her properly.
“She is not going anywhere because I take her,
” he said.

My chest tightened hard.
Nyx frowned.
“That makes no sense.
”
Zevran did not explain.
He just looked at me again.
And said my name.“Nymeria.
”
It felt different when he said it.
Like it was not the first time.
Like it was not new.
My breath became uneven.
Nyx noticed immediately.
“What is happening to you?” she asked.
I shook my head slightly.
“I do not know.
”
Zevran’s eyes narrowed a little.
“That is the bond,
” he said.
Nyx snapped.
“There is no bond. She was rejected.
”
Zevran answered instantly.
“Not all bonds die when rejected.
”
That silence hit harder than anything else.
Nyx went still.
I whispered without thinking.
“What does that mean?”
Zevran took one step closer again.
Nyx tried to block him, but he lifted his hand slightly.
Not touching her.
Just a command.
Nyx stopped moving.Her body froze.
I looked at her fast.
“Nyx?”
Zevran said calmly.
“She is fine. She just cannot interfere right now.
”
Nyx struggled slightly.
“What did you do?”
Zevran ignored her.
His focus stayed on me.
“You feel it,
” he said again.
I nodded slightly before I could stop myself.
Nyx saw it.
Her eyes widened.
“Nymeria, no.
”
But I could not lie.
“I feel something,
” I admitted.
Zevran’s expression changed slightly.
Not happy.
Not surprised.
Like he had been waiting for that answer.
From somewhere behind us, footsteps came.
Fast.
Sharp.
Selene Voss appeared at the end of the corridor.
Her eyes locked on Zevran immediately.Then on me.
Her expression changed instantly.
“What is going on here?” she asked sharply.
Zevran did not turn.
Selene stepped closer.
“I asked a question,
” she said again.
Nyx finally moved slightly.
“This is not your business.
”
Selene laughed once.
“Everything involving Alaric is my business,
” she said.
Zevran finally looked at her.
Just once.
And Selene stopped talking mid breath.
Silence returned instantly.
Zevran said,
“Leave.
”
Selene blinked.
“Excuse me?”
Zevran repeated it.
“Leave.
”
Her face tightened.
“I am not taking orders from you.
”
Zevran stepped forward slightly.
“And yet you will still leave.
”
Something about his tone made even Selene hesitate.But she forced her confidence back.
“I am going nowhere,
” she said.
Zevran looked at her for a long moment.
Then said quietly.
“You are afraid of her.
”
Selene’s eyes snapped to me.
“That is ridiculous,
” she said quickly.
Zevran continued.
“You feel it too. You just do not understand it yet.
”
Selene’s face tightened.
Nyx looked between them.
“What are you talking about?”
Zevran ignored her again.
He looked at me.
“Do you know what you are?” he asked.
My throat tightened.
“I am Nymeria,
” I said softly.
Zevran shook his head once.
“That is your name,
” he said.
“Not what you are.
”
A cold feeling ran through my chest.
Nyx whispered,
“Nymeria, stop listening.
”
But I was already listening.
Zevran took another step closer.Now he was close enough that I could feel him clearly.
Like pressure.
Like something pulling at me.
“I came for you,
” he said again.
I whispered,
“Why?”
His eyes stayed on mine.
“Because you did not break when you were supposed to.
”
Silence hit again.
Selene scoffed.
“This is nonsense. She is nothing special.
”
Zevran turned his head slightly.
“You will regret saying that,
” he said.
Selene stiffened.
“Are you threatening me?”
Zevran answered simply.
“No. I am warning you.
”
That made Selene stop speaking for a moment.
Nyx pulled me slightly back.
“We are leaving now,
” she said again.
But Zevran’s voice stopped her.
“Not yet.
”
Nyx froze.
Zevran looked at me again.
And this time, his voice dropped lower.“Something is waking inside you.
”
My chest tightened painfully.
Nyx whispered,
“Nymeria, come on.
”
But my feet would not move.
Zevran continued.
“And when it wakes fully, they will all see what you are.
”
My fingers trembled slightly.
“I do not understand,
” I said.
Zevran stepped even closer.
Now there was almost no space between us.
“You will,
” he said.
Behind him, one of his men appeared at the end of the corridor.
Darius.
He spoke quickly.
“Alpha, Alaric is searching for her.
”
That name made the air change again.
Zevran did not look away from me.
“Let him search,
” he said calmly.
Nyx stiffened.
“We are leaving now.
”
Zevran finally lifted his hand slightly.
Not stopping us.
But pointing slightly toward me.And he said the words that made everything inside me tighten again.
“Do not fight it.
”
My breath shook.
Nyx grabbed me hard.
“Nymeria, we are going.
”
This time, my body moved.
But even as I was pulled away…
I still felt it.
Zevran’s gaze.
And something inside me answering him.
