The city lights faded behind them as Damian drove into the shadows of the industrial district. The quiet hum of the car was the only sound as Selene sat rigidly in the passenger seat, clutching the backpack. She kept glancing at Damian, whose expression remained stoic, his sharp eyes fixed on the road ahead. “You said we’re ending this,” Selene began, her voice breaking the silence. “How?” “We’re going to hit Victor where it hurts,” Damian replied without looking at her. “But it won’t be enough to take him down quietly. We need to make it public—something he can’t cover up.” Selene frowned, fear and doubt gnawing at her. “If we do that, won’t he come after us harder?” Damian’s gaze flicked to her briefly, his voice cold. “He’s already coming. This time, we’ll make sure it counts.” --- The Meeting Point The car rolled to a stop in the middle of an abandoned industrial lot, surrounded by warehouses long forgotten by the city. The distant hum of traffic was a faint reminder of civilization, but here, it felt like a different world—quiet, dark, and suffocating. “Why here?” Selene asked, stepping out of the car. The air was cold, and she pulled her coat tighter around herself. “Because it’s the last place Victor’s men would look,” Damian replied, scanning the area. “Elias knows how to stay hidden.” The sound of footsteps echoed across the concrete. Selene tensed, her hand gripping the strap of the backpack as Damian stepped in front of her, his gun drawn. From the shadows emerged Elias, his glasses glinting faintly in the moonlight. His slim figure and casual stride were at odds with the tension in the air. He carried a laptop under one arm, a faint smirk on his face. “You look worse for wear, Cole,” Elias said, his tone light despite the circumstances. “Cut the jokes,” Damian snapped. “Do you have the files?” Elias nodded, holding up the laptop. “Everything’s here. The rest of the data decrypted and ready to go.” --- The Stakes Revealed Selene hovered behind Damian as Elias opened the laptop, the screen casting a cold glow on their faces. Lines of text and images filled the screen—financial transactions, contracts, blackmail material, and a list of names that made Selene’s stomach churn. “This is Victor’s empire,” Elias said, scrolling through the files. “Money laundering, bribes, political favors, assassinations—it’s all here. Enough to bring down not just him, but half the people in this city.” Selene’s voice trembled as she asked, “So what do we do with it?” “We leak it,” Damian replied, his voice firm. “All of it.” Elias looked up from the laptop, his face grim. “You realize what that means, right? Once this goes public, Victor will know exactly who did it. He won’t just come after you—he’ll scorch the earth to get revenge.” Damian’s jaw tightened. “He’s already hunting us. This way, we take control of the narrative.” Selene’s heart pounded. “And after? What happens to us?” Elias hesitated, glancing at Damian. “There’s no ‘after,’ not in the way you’re thinking. If we do this, you’ll never have a normal life again.” --- The Decision Selene gripped the strap of the backpack tighter, her mind racing. The flash drive felt like a ticking bomb in her hands, and every second brought her closer to its explosion. She thought of her quiet life before Victor—her small apartment, her dreams of freedom—and how far away it all seemed now. She looked at Damian, whose face was set in stone. “Do we even have a choice?” “No,” Damian said simply. “But we do have a chance. A small one. If this goes public, Victor won’t have time to chase us—he’ll be too busy trying to save himself.” Selene exhaled shakily. “Then let’s do it.” --- The Upload Elias’s fingers flew across the keyboard as he prepared the files for upload. The laptop’s screen glowed brightly in the darkness, casting eerie shadows across their faces. Selene paced the lot, her nerves fraying with every passing second. “How long will it take?” Damian asked, his voice steady. Elias didn’t look up. “Five minutes, maybe less. I’m sending it to multiple platforms—news outlets, watchdog organizations, social media. Once it’s out there, there’s no pulling it back.” Selene stopped pacing, her heart racing. “What if they find us before it’s done?” Elias glanced at her, his expression tight. “Then we improvise.” --- The Ambush As if on cue, the distant growl of engines reached their ears. Selene’s blood ran cold as headlights appeared at the edge of the lot, growing brighter as they approached. “They’re here,” Damian said, pulling his gun from his jacket. His voice was calm, but his body was tense, ready. Elias cursed under his breath. “Two minutes. Just hold them off.” Damian stepped forward, positioning himself between the cars and the laptop. “Stay behind me,” he said to Selene. The cars skidded to a stop, and Victor’s men poured out, armed and ready. Damian fired the first shot, the sound cutting through the night like a thunderclap. Chaos erupted as bullets flew, and Selene dropped to the ground, clutching the backpack. “Almost there!” Elias shouted over the gunfire. --- A Fight for Survival Damian moved like a force of nature, his sharp instincts and precise movements keeping the attackers at bay. Selene’s heart pounded as she watched him, her fear mixing with awe at his unrelenting determination. One of the attackers broke through the line, his gun aimed at Elias. Selene’s breath caught in her throat as she scrambled to her feet, shouting, “Behind you!” Elias ducked just as Damian appeared, slamming into the man with brutal force. The attacker crumpled to the ground, unconscious. “Stay down!” Damian barked, his eyes flashing with fury as he turned back to the fight. --- The Upload Completes Elias’s voice rang out above the chaos. “It’s done!” The laptop emitted a soft chime, signaling the successful upload. Elias grabbed it, his expression triumphant but urgent. “We need to move. Now!” Damian fired a final shot before grabbing Selene’s arm and pulling her toward the car. The attackers regrouped, their shouts growing louder as they fired wildly at the retreating trio. The car roared to life, its tires screeching as Damian sped away. Selene clung to the backpack, her breath coming in ragged gasps as the industrial lot disappeared into the distance. --- Cliffhanger Ending As the car raced down the highway, Damian’s phone buzzed. He glanced at the screen, his expression grim. “What is it?” Selene asked, her voice trembling. “It’s out there,” Damian said, his voice low. “Everything. The whole world knows.” Selene exhaled shakily, relief mingling with fear. But Damian’s next words sent a chill down her spine. “Victor’s not going to run. He’s coming for us.”
